Anti-Semitic slogans scrawled at WWII death camp

Several anti-Semitic graffiti, including one saying "Holocaust is a Jewish Lie," appeared Thursday on the walls of a World War II Nazi death camp in central Serbia.

Jasna Ciric, the head of the Jewish community in Nis, said the graffiti was apparently timed to coincide with the 64th anniversary of the massacre of some 1,100 Jews, Serbs and Gypsies in the camp.

"It's unbelievable that such messages are still alive in the 21st century," Ciric said, adding that about 12,000 people were killed by Nazis in the Bubanj concentration camp during World War II.

The other paint-written graffiti included: "Serbia for Serbs" and the infamous "Arbeit Macht Frei" (work liberates) slogan of the notorious Auschwitz death camp.

Serbia has seen a surge of anti-Semitism in recent years, fueled by nationalists who claim that all the republic's problems stem from the powerful Jews who allegedly support anti-Serb policies in the United States and elsewhere in the world.

Glad you saw the links between them, islamic hatred, the fruits of the teachings of mohammad, are nothing more nor less than the enshrinement of the parasitic way of life of the nomadic arabs, who led a cruel, survivalist existance on the Peninsula for millenia before spreading out to terrorise, raze and pillage the land between the Nile and the Euphrates.

It's no use expecting or hoping the entertainment industry of which journalism and radio/TV communications are a part, to teach us history, when the educators themselves are not - or WE are not seeking it out - have you noticed how people's eyes glaze over when you mention something that happened more than a generation ago?

To understand the arabs, to attempt to follow what we are dealing with, we must go back to a culture that was formed millenia ago. The earliest historical records of the nomadic arab tribes are to be found in the Old Testament and the Papyrus of Ipuwer.

They were known as the Amu by the Egyptians, described as 'an ignoble race that came from the East' - they were the Hyksos, which means Shepherd Kings. The OT refers to them as Amalek. The Amalekites.

As a bit of a WWII aviation buff, I never could understand how America could turn its back on the Serbs after the help they gave during that war. Many Serbs lost their lives to the Nazis for helping downed American fliers. I guess if you are not one of those saved aviators this fact is lost to history. Why the former President Clinton bombed the Serbs and all the beautiful and majestic building and bridges I've never been able to fathom. Any Serb that want to come to America should be welcomed with open arms, not have their homeland bombed.

You KNOW the Serbs as a people were butchered by NAZIS. HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS, 800,000 aprox. All were MURDERED by Croat nazis and bosnian nazis. Jews and Gypsies also were victims of those same %$$##%* nazis!!!

Serbians and Jews went to their deaths together in Belgrade during an episode in Belgrade.

The nazis forced large numbers of Jews and Orthodox Christians( I think there were some priests in the group too) onto the ice floes in the Danube and then shot the victims to bits. No one survived.

There is monument in Belgrade at that spot... crosses and stars of David going into the water side by side.

NATO( rumor has it was German NATO planes) bombed the monument and a bridge near it during the 1999 agression committed by clinton and his liberal pals.

Do you remember the news coverage of a refugee camp, that suddenly was empty. The news media showed the empty grounds - littered with baby diapers and etc. It was totally weird how these people seemed to have just vanished off the face of the earth.

Do you recall this incident at all??? I'll never forget wondering what happened to all those people. They were there and poof, within 24 hours or less, they were gone. We're talking of hundreds or thousands of people.

Was this in Macedonia, which was where the international community set up these camps and had all the reporters?

The explanation is simply that they moved on as easily as they got there - they were not prisoners and had any transportation as anyone else - buses, taxis, cars.

Many stopped by these places to get free food, then probably went on the live in homes of people that took them in, hotels, left for other countries which were taking them in, moved to another city or camp, etc.

Macedonian medical personnel testified that there were no injuries among the refugees; that they did have money - and even weapons with them.

Your own eyes could probably tell you that - that they weren't injured, they were clean (freshly shaved, bathed), and wearing decent clothing - (clean, no tears, holes, and weather appropriate). They had freedom of movement and travel. So just as 10s of thousands of people can gather at a stadium for a sports games and the place be empty a few hours later, the Albanians could be at a site one day and gone the next - leaving as quickly as they arrived.

That there is Croat propaganda. They were the biggest killers of Serbs - it was their stated policy to kill 1/3, expell 1/3, and convert the last 1/3. However, even those Serbs who were forced to convert were often killed anyways.

Even the Nazis were shocked by how brutally the Croats killed Serbs.

Further, many Serbs were sent to Auschwitz and other German camps.

Their army, which was betrayed by the Croat officers, was imprisoned or killed. Many thousands were in prison in German. A German clergyman wrote about some of these imprisoned Serbs upon their release at the end of the war - "5,000 living skeletons" he said of them:

That kind of victory is more sublime than a material victory. It seems to me that only the Serbs could win such a victory, being brought up in their St. Sava's spirit and epic poetry, which our Goethe loved so much. This victory will live for centuries in the souls of us Germans. I wanted to dedicate my last clergy man's sermon to that victory and the Serbs who won it" -- Frederick Griesendorf.

The Croats and many Jews, like Philip J. Cohen, who wrote a book called "Serbia's Secret War" are trying to say that Serbia cooperated with the Germans and they didn't suffer from the Nazis in Serbia. Revisionists and liars!

This is the reality of the German occupation of Serbia. They are Serbs, not Jews being killed.

An interesting letter Joan. Thank you for posting. There are however, other writings that do not paint as beautiful a picture of Serbs as that letter does. One such book is:

I have been referred to it as another source of information. Is this propaganda also? I ask you, do you believe that the Serbs were free of the taint of hatred? Really, I do not know, but am only beginning to learn. I have no axe to grind here, except that Jews were beset upon by many. I find it hard to believe European Christian=good, European Moslem=bad. I only wonder if the truth lies somewhere in between.

A grim picture indeed. The Cohen book, which I have not read, is lies? Were all the Jews in Serbia murdered only by Nazis and Muslims?

Philip Cohen is a dentist or physician in the U.S. He wasn't there. Ruth Mitchell, who I believe was Jewish, and the sister of one of the founders of the U.S. airforce - I think his name was Billy Mitchell, was IN Serbia DURING the war and even spent time in a Gestapo prison in Belgrade.

Her book is "The Serbs Choose War", and she wrote of Serbs being hung in Belgrade and their bodies left there for days as a warning to Serbs. She also wrote of Serb teen girls, whom she met in the women's prison she was in, being beaten severely and sometimes hanged because they were believed to be part of the resistance.
