Democrats may unite on plan to pull troops

WASHINGTON -- After months of trying unsuccessfully to develop a common message on the war in Iraq, Democratic Party leaders are beginning to coalesce around a broad plan to begin a quick withdrawal of US troops and install them elsewhere in the region, where they could respond to emergencies in Iraq and help fight terrorism in other countries.

The concept, dubbed ''strategic redeployment," is outlined in a slim, nine-page report coauthored by a former Reagan administration assistant Defense secretary, Lawrence J. Korb, in the fall. It sets a goal of a phased troop withdrawal that would take nearly all US troops out of Iraq by the end of 2007, although many Democrats disagree on whether troop draw-downs should be tied to a timeline.

Howard Dean, Democratic National Committee chairman, has endorsed Korb's paper and begun mentioning it in meetings with local Democratic groups. In addition, the study's concepts have been touted by the senator assigned to bring Democrats together on Iraq -- Jack Reed of Rhode Island -- and the report has been circulated among all senators by Senator Dianne Feinstein, an influential moderate Democrat from California.

The party remains divided on some points, including how much detail to include in a party-produced document, fearful of giving too much fodder for attacks by Republicans.

I reckon no one has advised the Dims that they aren't running the war.

Exactly.

Public Law 107-243

SEC. 3. AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES.

(a) Authorization.--The President is authorized to use the Armed Forces of the United States as he determines to be necessary and appropriate in order to--

(1) defend the national security of the United States against the continuing threat posed by Iraq; and

(2) enforce all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq.

Kudos go to them for actually putting a coherent and substantive plan together.

And thanks go to them for making it a ridiculous one that most Americans will oppose.

Howard Dean, Democratic National Committee chairman, has endorsed Korb's paper and begun mentioning it in meetings with local Democratic groups.

Whatever the Republicans are paying Howard Dean to be the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, it isn't enough.

Apparently they're not satisfied that this is enough like Vietnam yet. They want to add the element of a tenuous, micromanaged military commitment and use of insufficient force, instead of overwhelming force, so as to maximize our casualties. (We can blame every death, from the moment this plan hits the floor of congress, at their feet for the terrorists will fight 100x as hard knowing there's a goal ahead.)

Then, we can pull out in defeat, setting up Iraq and world terror for victory, while making every American death since the AM of 9/11 completely pointless and without meaning.

Great plan. Maybe we can call it "peace with honor" or something catchy like that.

The folks that voted these DemoRats into office and return the same kind of folks with the mindset of certifiable nut-cases election cycle after election cycle(RINOs included) are the real culprits and should be restrained for being so gullible or just plain stupid by nature,(a must and a naturally occurring internal dysfunction of all brain dead DemButts).

This is a stupid idea by the Dems that they developed entirely for their own political benefit. If all our troops are pulled out of Iraq to neighboring countries, there will immediately be an "emergency" in Iraq and they will have to move right back in and rebuild their camps. Another stupid, irresponsible, totally political proposal from the democRATs.

In the first moments of our new War on Terror in New York City...

...there was one man who did NOT quickly pull out.

...Instead he stayed to make sure his 3,000 Morgan Stanley employees were outta there at the World Trade Center...

...before Tower II came crashing down on him.

Do they honestly think that 'strategic redeployment' will keep our soldiers from being targets of terrorists?

They are truly a buncha maroons.

And the 06-08 Dem platform solidifies.

Just like gelatin - translucent, shapeless, and repulsive. To paraphrase Osama bin Laden, if people have to choose between a strong horse and a jackass, they'll choose the strong horse.

This sounds like the existing Administration plan....

As the Iraqis stand up, we will stand down. By the end of 2007, the Iraqis should have sufficient military and police force to pacify their country.

We will keep a reserve of 50,000 or so...These will be Air Force, Special Forces, Logistics and Quick Reaction forces. We will also have several groups there ("Military Administration", Army and Marines) developing language and cultural skills to better aide us in the Arab world.

If Korb is purposing this to get the Dems on board and to take the war off the 2006 election, then it is a smart democratic move. Howard Dean would be smart to jump on this proposal, even though it is no different that what the Admin is currently attempting to do.

Good morning.
"former Reagan administration assistant Defense secretary, Lawrence J. Korb"

What is it with former Reagan bureaucrats? And why does anyone think that a former relationship with RWR's administration gives them any credibility?

It's like thinking that a flag officer promoted under bill clinton is to be trusted when it comes to military matters.
