'Brokeback' named Hollywood word of the year

Tue Feb 28, 2006 10:33 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - And the winner for Hollywood's word of the year is "Brokeback," thanks to all the talk around the water cooler and Internet jokes that have turned a film about two gay cowboys into a cultural phenomenon.

The nonprofit group Global Language Monitor placed "Brokeback" -- as in the film title "Brokeback Mountain" -- at the top of its list of Hollywood words and phrases that captured attention this year.

Paul JJ Payack, the head of Global Language Monitor, said the movie became a cultural phenomenon that generated a million jokes, according to Google. Overall, a Google search shows more than 38 million references to the film, although only about 10 million people saw the movie.

In second place was "Brangelina," the hybrid name given to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as Hollywood's hottest new couple. They beat out "TomKat," bestowed on Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes and "Vincifer," a hardly used term referring to Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn.

Placing third on the list was "petronoia," a phrase inspired by the film "Syriana" and meaning an irrational fear of the collapse of the oil industry followed by global economic crisis.

In fourth place was "tuxedo," a reference to the nature film "March of the Penguins." Payack said, that "while the dialogue, not to mention the stars, were a bit stiff, the chronicle about Emperor penguins in their breeding trek across Antarctica flew to remarkable heights."

Payack said the term "pimping" was fifth on his list, thanks to the film "Hustle & Flow," which is about a pimp's dream of becoming a rap star.

I always used the think the classic SciFi storyline of hostile aliens happening across Earth and setting out to destroy mankind was trite and made no sense at all in the context of an enlightened, technologically-advanced interstellar-faring race.

But then I read articles like this....

Ten million? You wish. Much of the box office was from multiple viewings in the sodomite community...a few million, at best.

I live in 'sodomite central' (New England). 'Sodomite Mountain' was in and out (so to speak) of the local cinema in one week.

I am sad to see Hollywood to get ever more delusional with flops like BM. What happened to the Hollywood that gave us "Philadelphia'?

All I can say is if anybody calls me brokeback they'd better be smiling when they say it because otherwise I'd have to take it as an insult and fighting words.

Hollywood thinks they have made some sort of social breakthrough for homosexuals with this movie but actually all they have accomplished is adding another funny but cruel slur to our vocabulary to augment other funny but derogatory slurs like pillow-biter and fudgepacker.

According to boxofficemojo.com, Syriana has grossed $52.4 million -- production budget (not including promotions) of $50.0 million. The site estimates that a movie needs to gross at least double the budget to break even -- so, yes, it's a bomb.

However, by the time the DVD and TV markets are factored in, it'll probably be in the black. Sometimes Hollywood seems to be imune from market forces.

The hollyweird clowns didn't know what a joke they would make out of their attempt to shove their deviant life styles down our throats.

My family and friends have now taken to calling the "alternate lifestyle" crowd brokebackers. And, as diragatorily as we intend it, it still can be done without the PC backlash stigma of saying faggot, queer, girly man, etc. The left doesn't yet know how to react to this new term.

Every time I see a cowboy on TV, even the tough bull riders, I think of this movie.

Cowboys should beat the crap out of the actors, director, producer and anyone else having anything to do with the making of this "movie".

I've always wondered what the craft people on the set of a movie like Brokeback think about. I'll bet they don't crowd around to gawk at the nekkid actors.
