UNC Hit-and-Run

The driver of an SUV that sped through the UNC-CH campus, hitting several people, allegedly planned the attack as retribution for the treatment of Muslims around the world.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- A recent University of North Carolina graduate faces attempted murder charges after a sport utility vehicle raced through a popular campus gathering spot Friday, hurting nine people and scattering startled bystanders.

Six people -- five students and a visiting scholar -- were treated at UNC Hospitals, though a hospital spokesman said none was seriously injured. Five were released Friday and the sixth wasn't expected to be admitted to the hospital, the university said in a statement. Three other people declined treatment at the scene, police said.

Mohammed Reza Taheriazar, 22, a December graduate, was being held Friday by campus police. They intend to charge him with nine counts of attempted murder and nine counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, said Capt. George Hare of the UNC Department of Public Safety.

The FBI joined the case because Taheriazar, a native of Iran, "allegedly made statements that he acted to avenge the American treatment of Muslims. The ongoing investigation will work to confirm this," said Special Agent Richard Kolko, an FBI spokesman in Washington.

Officials say the incident occurred in front of Lenoir Hall in a gathering area known as The Pit, a popular gathering spot in the center of the campus. Officials say the incident occurred in front of Lenoir Hall in a gathering area known as The Pit, a popular gathering spot in the center of the campus. Taheriazar called police to surrender and then awaited officers on a side street about two miles away from campus, Chapel Hill police Capt. Brian Curran said.

"He kind of gave himself up," said Officer Herbert Bryant of the university's Department of Public Safety.

Local authorities declined to discuss a motive.

"As far as delving into his motives and things like that, we're in the process of developing that in our investigation," Hare said.

The incident happened just before noon near the center of campus at the area known as The Pit, a sunken, brick-paved area surrounded by two libraries, a dining hall and the student union. It does not have any easy access points for vehicles and can't be reached without deliberation.

"I see everyone kind of part because there's a car coming through and the next thing I know, I'm on his windshield," sophomore Jeff Hoffman, his arm in a bandage, told the campus newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel.

Mohammed Reza Taheriazar is led to the back of a police cruiser. Mohammed Reza Taheriazar is led to the back of a police cruiser. Student Nicholas Altman was talking on his cell phone when he heard someone scream.

"I turned around and there was a white SUV. It looked like it hit a couple of people. One person in particular went over the hood," he told WRAL-TV.

On a sunny, cool day like Friday, the Pit is a busy center of campus activities, with students perched along the walkways and steps. Friday's noontime crowd included a gathering of candidates for Black Student Movement elections.

"He slowly came in, and I thought he was going to stop or something," sophomore Scot Wilson, a candidate for BSM vice president, told The Daily Tar Heel. "But then he sped right through."

By 3 p.m., a bomb squad from the State Bureau of Investigation had come to University Commons apartments in nearby Carrboro, where Taheriazar lived, at the request of local police, said SBI spokeswoman Noelle Talley. Carrboro police did not immediately return a call.

The incident came a week after a UNC dormitory resident adviser was killed when he and another student crashed through a dorm window, falling four stories onto the concrete below. The second student remains hospitalized in fair condition.

Our son attends UNC-Chapel Hill. Today, in the first violent attack on Americans since Sept. 11, a violent Muslim from Iran used his SUV to try and kill numerous UNC students "...allegedly planned the attack as retribution for the treatment of Muslims around the world." I am outraged. Imagine if your family were attacked today as my son's friends were! I beg with all of my heart that everyon e on this website will e-mail their congress members and demand that the various terrorist acts be amended immediately to require the death penalty for any Muslim who uses violence within the United States against Americans in response to U.S. policy! We need to act swiftly to help stave off more of this kind of uncivilized evil!!! Richard L. Houston Big Bear Lake, CA

"avenge the American treatment of mulims"?

I was unaware that we were running any of them over in SUV's. They need to stop visas from muslim countries right now!

I wonder if the university could withdraw his degree? He won't need it in prison anyway. Why should his name be included with the rest of his class for the rest of their lives?

Not quite accurate...Terrorism didn't just come ashore...It's been here...It's just starting to show it's ugly face...

There was a terrorist attack in Oklahoma last fall but was bumbled...The Feds covered it up...

The Feds will cover this one as well...Just a simple murderer, not a terrorist...

Our gov't is going to get us all blown up...

At Chapel Hill they'll probably apologize to him profusely and give him an honorary doctorate.

An attack by car is what you make when you're too F'ing stupid, pampered and rich to spend time on the Internet to determine how to really kill people....frankly a baseball bat would be more effective in the long term. The question is now, how to punish him? Death would send a very strong signal to the rest of the wannabes like Mohammed Reza Taheriazar.

It's very disturbing to me that here in Raleigh this is NOT being reported as terrorism or anything close to it.

I'm waiting for the 10 p.m. WRAL news to see if they've changed their tune.

Notice how nowhere in the article does it mention that Mohammed Reza Taheriazar was actually driving the SUV, which he obviously was.

Who slowly came in? Is the SUV a male?

Ridiculous...

I thought we were treating Iranians generously in the U.S. They are generally enthusiastic entrepreneurs and by separating Americans from their money they provide material comforts and a multitude of opportunities for self improvement for their families.

Poor fellow is confused, he identifies more with the checkered and fairly recent history of Islam instead of the glory of ancient Persia. His Iranian acquaintances must regard him as a knucklehead.

No, but that's the beatty and fun of it all. You never know! Muslims are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. And in the case of the worst, you may not realize it until your head is half off.

Mark Steyn recently recalled an event in Paris:

In five years' time, how many Jews will be living in France? Two years ago, a 23-year-old Paris disc jockey called Sebastien Selam was heading off to work from his parents' apartment when he was jumped in the parking garage by his Muslim neighbor Adel. Selam's throat was slit twice, to the point of near-decapitation; his face was ripped off with a fork; and his eyes were gouged out. Adel climbed the stairs of the apartment house dripping blood and yelling, "I have killed my Jew. I will go to heaven."

Certainly lets you know that "something's awry."

When we saw his name was Mohammed, we were already speculating about this earlier. It seems to me that this article pretty well lets the cat out of the bag, and I don't know how the FBI can cover it up now.

Of course this is a local TV station, and the major media will probably ignore it.

I just got off the phone with someone there and asked what kind of PC headline this was. I said this was clearly an act of domestic terrorism since the guilty person confessed and said his motivation was to avenge fellow Muslims. The man then said he would look into it. I again stressed that this was plain, obvious domestic terrorism and that this headline did not speak to the plain facts of the matter.

One of the nice things about an engineering degree from Clemson - we didn't have time for all the stupid stuff. It was get down to business and do it quickly.

If the calculus, differential eqn, orthogonal eqns & BVPs, organic chem, P. chem, physics, statics, dynamics, strengths of materials, electrical eng theory, kinetics, controls, and thermo professors were libs, they sure didn't have time to worm it into the classes!

Here is the Oklahoma information and http://www.michellemalkin.com/ has alot of info on this Carolina guy as well. She's da bomb...kaboom!

THE OU BOMBER: CASE NOT CLOSED
By Michelle Malkin · March 01, 2006 12:15 PM
So much for the lonely, depressed young student theory to explain how University of Oklahoma Joel Hinrichs found himself blown to bits on a park bench outside the packed campus football stadium last fall. The Daily Oklahoman reports on A1 today:

A Norman police bomb expert said Tuesday he does not believe University of Oklahoma student Joel Henry Hinrichs III committed suicide by blowing himself up outside a packed football stadium.
"I believe he accidentally blew himself up," Sgt. George Mauldin said.

Mauldin said Hinrichs, 21, an engineering student, had two to three pounds of triacetone triperoxide, commonly known as TATP, in a backpack in his lap when it exploded Oct. 1.

When asked if he believed Hinrichs meant to enter the stadium with the explosives, Mauldin replied, "I don't believe he intended for an explosion to occur at that spot (on the park bench)."

"Some of us will forever wonder what he (Hinrichs) was doing at that time, at that place," Police Chief Phil Cotten said.

Hinrichs was sitting on a park bench 173 yards from the OU stadium during the second quarter of OU's night game against Kansas State when the TATP inside his backpack detonated.

"Someone saw him fiddling with it (the backpack) shortly before the explosion occurred. I think he got cocky, and it went off," Mauldin said.

Hat tip: Mark Tapscott, who writes:

Within hours of Hinrichs death, the FBI's Joint Task Force on Terrorism took over the investigation of the incident. Soon thereafter, both FBI officials and University of Oklahoma President David Boren said Hinrichs had no known terrorist connections and intended only to kill himself.
Despite the official denials, there was substantial evidence at the time of Hinrichs death and in the days thereafter as more was learned about his background and actions during the final year of his life that suggested to others the distinct possibility that Hinrichs was involved in some way with a terrorist activity.

Jason Smith:

So what "spot" was he intending to detonate? That's the million dollar question. He had 2 to 3 pounds of TATP, "the most unstable explosive known and the explosive of choice in the Middle East". Even a small amount can cause an explosion. 2 to 3 pounds. That's quite a bit of "mother of satan" for a lonely kid to use when he decides to "just quit living".
