I just got back from a cruise around Hawaii, and a third of the passengers were Canadians. I mingled with quite a few, and 100% said the health care system sucks, and none were disrespectful of the US. Many shared their horror stories of visits to the Dr. One said that they broke their arm and when they went to the Health care center they were told we don't have that specialist so go home. It wasn't set for 9 days!
Of course they respected this American because I won the John Travolta dance contest on the ship, but that's another story

I will never understand how anybody thought it was necessary or enough material to create a degree, let alone a master and doctorate for philosophy. I can understand having classes on the subject, but a degree! Piano Theory sounds more like a Music Degree with instrument emphases on piano.

current findings (based on data compiled no later than 2001) with those of two decades ago.The article is based on data five years old or more, which means pre-9/11, pre-Iraq, pre-jihadi a-holes runnning amok. What is the point?
Social Science at the University of Mchigan has a special meaning all its own.

The Canadians better be careful or we'll send up a boyscout troop to kick their ass and take over the country.

Never really heard Gitmo being brought up. It's not really a big issue in the day to day existence for the majority of Canadians. Crappy Healthcare, high taxes, government corruption they play alot bigger.

"But WHY does he hate the USA? Is it because he's a Canadian? Or more likely because he's a professor?"
Excellent observation! Most american professors hate the USA as well.

Crappy Healthcare, high taxes, government corruption they play alot bigger. That sounds to me like a big distinction between Americans and Canadians. One of the big issues for Americans (and the reason President Bush got re-elected) is terrorism and the potential it has to inflict terrible losses on our civilization.

He's obviously bright ... PHD in philosophy and degrees in piano theoryI would disagree. It is not obvious that he's bright (though it may be obvious that he thinks he's bright). Having a PhD in a mushy non-technical field simply means that he's persistent and had means. A PhD in these types of fields may have equated to intelligence once, but from what I have seen, there is no longer any correlation between (general) academic achievement and native intelligence.
That is one reason why academic credentials in and of themselves offer no rational basis for folks presuming an insight into matters of governing policy.

Just a note. The study of philosophy and confirmation of degrees in the subject was fundamental to university education. Everything else came much, much later.

Does he believe they are created by an intelligent being or that they evolved from simple stringed instruments?

I think those are two different subjects.
How often do you discuss Gitmo over coffee with friends?
OTOH, I think most intelligent people do discuss terrorism from time to time.

Yes true Gitmo isn't coffee talk. I think the bigger point is that while terorism is a concern Gitmo isn't a Canadian issue. Most Canadians I know treat it as an American issue and have no real opinion either way.
