Non-hispanic white people are already a distinct minority riding the NYC Subways, based on my not so scientific observations.
The major trend is the fact that the NY area is increasingly inhabited by affluent whites, and immigrants of various economic levels. The folks that are leaving tend to be blue collar and low-level white collar whites, who simply can't afford to live in the tri-state area, and don't want to live two families to a house.
In terms of real estate values, NY will remain, like California, out of the reach of many people. As a result, the only folks who can live there will be those who have "made it" and those strivers (largely immigrants) who don't mind living several families to a small house.
This is what happens when you institute government program after government program that discriminates against people by their skin color - they flee.
"New York is still the classic melting pot, with a whole diverse array of immigrants coming in, but the suburbs are now becoming part of this bigger melting pot," said William H. Frey, the Brookings Institution demographer who conducted the analysis. "The suburbs are now tasting this new diversity."
His analysis found that whites declined to 52.2 percent of the population in 2004 from 54.2 percent in 2000 in the census-defined metropolitan area, which includes the city, Long Island, the northern suburbs, northern New Jersey and northeastern Pennsylvania, but not Connecticut.
"We went down 2.1 percent from 2000 to 2004," Dr. Frey said. "If we go another 2 percent before the end of the decade, you're there." He added: "The suburbs are now contributing to this. They've all shown a decline in the percent of whites since 1990."
And herein lies the rub. When I was a kid on Long Island in the 1980s, Nassau was VERY segregated (as cyborg and I have discussed at length on other threads), with only a handful of Hispanics, and blacks segregated to Hempstead and Roosevelt. From what I understand, Nassau is increasingly Hispanic (especially on the South Shore) and Asian (Koreans and Chinese on the North Shore, East Indians all over). The descendants of the Italian, Jewish, and Irish immigrants who can't afford to live in the "exclusive" communities are simply voting with their feet.
However, wait until they get to Florida and North Carolina, and they realize that the same phenomenon is happening there as well, albeit in not as large numbers. I mean, is there ANYWHERE (outside of a handful of retirement communities) where the white population is increasing faster than that of Asians and Hispanics?
I surely hope that y'all now understand why hillary finds it so easy to be re-elected senator from this poor state.
Just curious, but why do demographers segregate "hispanic whites" from "non-hispanic whites?" I don't recall anyone segregating non-Italian whites and non-Irish whites from Italian whites and Irish whites.

Would this mean whites could call themselves a "minority"? Nah. That's another word that is owned by the other races, and whites aren't allowed to use.
Hello!! Detroit is a "large metropolitan area" (6th largest in the country). Whites have been a minority in Detroit for over 20 years. I know it's hard for New Yorkers to understand that everything west of the Hudson River is not the "wild west", but Detroit is definitely outside the South and West!
Time to move to Idaho, Montana or South Carolina
But will still be excluded under Affirmative Action. Must suffer the punishment for sins of the father I guess.

It looks like the whites are still a plurality. In other words, the journos will add the 20% black, to the 25% Latino, to the 6% Asian, and voila, the 49% white is not a majority.
Will we then afford the same rights to future said minority?
Well, the outcome lies with them -- they're aborting themselves out of existence.
