BDS [Bush Derangement Syndrome] On the Right (Paleocons, and the like)
To The Point ^ | March 9, 2005 | Dr. Jack Wheeler

Posted on 03/11/2006 4:08:48 PM PST by quidnunc

Ever since George W. Bush won the presidency by preventing Al Gore's hanging-chad attempt to steal it, liberal Democrats have become progressively infected with BDS — Bush Derangement Syndrome.

Here's how I think that the contagion of BDS is now infecting a number of conservative Republicans.

If you're a guy, perhaps you have endured this unpleasant and bewildering experience. You're in a relationship and you and the lady have had some disagreements but nothing major. From your perspective things are pretty ok. Then one day you and she disagree on some minor trivial issue — and suddenly, inexplicably, it escalates as she unloads on you.

It seems like the love of your life has had a personality transplant, you're facing a virago disgorging a torrent of anger, and all you can think is, "Where did this come from?"

If you're a guy, you're nodding your head in understanding. If you're a gal, you're muttering, "Men are so clueless. We give them all these hints for so long that things are bugging us, they never get the message, then when we finally can't take it any more and snap, they're mystified."

I think you get the analogy.

A relationship that suffers this trauma can survive only if both parties calm down afterwards, focus on their mutual interests and commitment, and work together to solve their grievances.

-snip-

But it's another thing entirely when Duncan Hunter (R-CA), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, goes around the bend and offers a bill to make all foreign ownership or leasing of any cargo terminal in any US port illegal. Duncan, my buddy whom I've gone quail hunting with, how could he get so nuts?

There are some 3,200 terminals in US ports. 80% of them are foreign owned or leased. Unions and government regulations have made it impossible for US shipping companies to stay in business, making them bit players in the international shipping business. (See this story in the New York Times, US Companies Weighed Anchor on Ports Long Ago.)

Duncan's bill would cause astronomical damage to the US economy, but he doesn't care because he's on a BDS rant.

President Bush and the WH staff completely bungled this issue. Allow me to first apologize for not knowing all the facts, but work, family, and March Madness have seriously cut into my Freeping and research time.

I was in the camp with Mark Levin and Laura Ingraham: the additional 45 days would have been good to shed more light on the issue, while excoriating Democrats for making a political issue out of this. As more facts came out in the hearings, more support would have emerged for President Bush.

Instead, President Bush basically said, "trust me, it's a good deal", and that he'd veto any bill that overturned the DPW deal.

A very short time later, the deal is cancelled, amid statements that anyone who had opposed the deal was racist towards Muslims.

If my synopsis is generally accurate, then the WH staff needs to resign now. This country, and this President, is being ill-served by a staff that is out of touch with its base. I firmly believe that they are worn out and bereft of new ideas, and have lost the "eye of the tiger." I haven't seen them seriously engage the Democrats on policy issues since the election, and it looks like they're just trying to run out the clock.

Can someone out there tell me that I'm wrong? I need to start getting enthused about the 2006 election.

They don't fool me Ohio, they're all over the place trying to disrupt. I highly doubt they will change one single opinion.

Looks to me like you've had enough FReeping time to have a pretty darned good handle on things.

So, according to you, the American people are racists because they are suspicious of Arabs?

And if and when we get hit with another 9/11 event, we will all need each other. What name will you call other Americans who happened to disagree with you on one issue then? The sheikhs are not crying over this.

I am surprised that a man with as much dignity as you have, EV, would defend such despicable behavior in others.

Notwithstanding your kind remark that tempered it, since you have accused me of 'defending despicable behavior', you now have an obligation to specifically point out where I did that.

No. I'm saying your arguments are at best incoherent and at worst ignorant.

Then let me be clear:

Sour grapes articles like this one from Republican insiders like Jack Wheeler are making a bad situation worse.

If they really care about the President and GOP prospects, kindly tell them to shut up.

In the latest FR poll, 51.8% composite posters say the deal was "bad" or "very bad."

The phenomenon that I saw during the debates on FR was that, instead of sticking to debating the issue, the proponents and supporters of DPW quickly resorted to personally insulting and characterizing other FReepers who disagreed with them.

And posting this opinion piece is further divisive. How far is this going to go before people here just drop it?

Thanks, EV. I haven't really focused on much of anything since my daughter informed us she's spending spring break at South Padre next week.

There's been a lot of praying for her and pleading with her to be extremely careful next week. She's a great kid who is working through the growing pains of her freshman year in college. She still hasn't fully grasped the "one hour in class, two hours in homework" that her mother and I went by in college. I've never told her that I had more than a few classes at Gonzaga where they were "1/3" or "1/4", especially the philosophy and religion courses.

I know this is off-topic, and there's a "spring break" thread, but I never really had a spring break. All 4 years of college, we had a 4-day ROTC "spring camp" at Fort Lewis, which was run completely by the seniors. After 4 days of no sleep and harassment, I just enjoyed heading home for a couple of days and Mom's home cooking.

One year, I spent a few days at a friend's house in Port Townsend. I saw where they filmed much of "An Officer and a Gentleman". Beautiful country up there, and it was a great respite from school and ROTC (at that time, we jokingly called Gonzaga ROTC, "West Point West"). My class had a pretty good record: out of 25 graduates, over half went RA, and we still have one on active duty: MG Jason Kamiya, Army operational commander in Afghanistan.

Sorry for the rambling, but it's been hard to keep focused.

This is what has me worried for 11/06. Even Hannity has broken RR's 11th Commandment.

I'm also disappointed that President Bush allowed the deal to die so quickly, especially after he threatened a veto over any competing bill.

Love your home page, BTW.

You have blamed this fiasco entirely on those of us who support the President, EV. And in doing that, you have excused the ugliness against the President, and the overt (yes, overt) racism by some of those opposed to the DPW deal.

I haven't seen your initial comments tempered by anything since. This is not President Bush's fault, nor is it the fault of those of us who defend his character, and have done so in spite of ugly attacks on US over the past week.

Drop it? The Republicans in Congress betrayed the President by attaching their stopping of the port deal to a DEFENSE bill for our troops. It is despicable what was done to the President.

They also made all of America look like our word means nothing by agreeing to a 45 day waiting period and then reneging on their agreement.

I don't think it should be 'dropped.' The people who are supposed to represent us have not kept their word, and I find that disturbing.

I have seen ugly, ugly stuff around here in the past week, and not a bit of it was coming from a Bush supporter.

Whoa, is that ever selective vision. You just don't see how divisive you are.

Yeah, that was a big one for Hannity, eh?

As a lover of irony, I find it ultimately ironic that such a sexist article as this can come out of the same camp that accused critics of the president of being "sexist" in the Harriet Miers debacle.

It's also ironic that the knee-jerk, emotional defense then attributes emotion ("virago disgorging a torrent of anger") to critics of the port deal.

Who's really acting like an adult here?

How divisive I am? I have been defending the honor of an honorable man against brutal attacks of people claiming to be 'conservatives.' I have asked repeatedly for rational discourse and not unbridled emotion on thread after thread......and have gotten beaten up for it.

Please explain how it is I who am being 'divisive?'

The rational thought........the FACTS did not support pulling out of this deal. It was emotion that was behind the opposition...........emotion caused by leftist media lies and wimpy Republicans. There was no security risk to it. The U.S. military was behind it..........but emotions told us that it wasn't a good idea.

Conservatives are supposed to base their politics on clear thinking......not feelings.

I think you misunderstood the poll question
