ABC News Ch 5 ^

Police trying to piece together why a gun was stored in a family's couch and how it ended up in a three-year-old's hands.

According to police the boy found the gun in it's hiding place in the couch. When the boy's mother saw her son with the gun she took it from him, removed the clip, and put the gun back in the couch not knowing it was still loaded.

"The three year-old picked up the gun and fired it - there was a round still in the chamber - striking the mother in the knee," St. Paul Police Officer Pete Crum told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.

An ambulance took the 43-year-old woman took Regions Hospital where she's in fair condition. Investigators plan to forward the case to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office for possible child endangerment charges.

Officer Crum wants this case to serve as a reminder to other gun owners to always lock the slide back, open the chamber up and feel the chamber with their finger before they assume the gun is unloaded.

Why, why, why are people so mind-bogglingly stupid?

What was so stupid about it was removing the magazine and not clearing the chamber.
Do that, and it's just a hammer.

I always thought that if it was a single row, it was a clip and if it has a staggered row like a Mini 14 has, then it is a magazine. Am I wrong?

I swear sometimes I think the left deliberately finds these morons and arms them just so we can have stupid stories like these to prove their case.

I didn't know that the "knee" was a vital area of the human body.

Only for walkin'.

Screw gun locks, that just plays into liberals hands by accepting them, the idiot should have put the gun on top of the fridge or somewhere else the kid could not get to it. Then she should have found out who left it there and beat the tar out of that person. She didn't so she got some of what she deserved. Luckily the kid didn't have the muzzle in it's mouth when the trigger was pulled.

Maybe the kid needed some information that she was holding out on.

Obviously officer crum has somehow managed to do this without getting his fingers bit.

I'd reccommend looking in the chamber (from the breech end, naturally) to make sure the chamber is clear.

Another person killed by gun ignorance.

Read the article. She was shot in the knee. It was not fatal. Next time she should read the manual or get some training to understand how to unload her firearm. A good 5 button safe bolted to a heavy table would be a much better "hiding" place.

No, it's not just you.

I keep my .38 in the couch by the front door. But I don't have kids.

The key difference is that a magazine contains a spring and follower to push each round into firing position. A clip holds a set of loaded cartridges in a convenient orientation for rapidly loading the internal magazine of the firearm. The M1 Garand has the spring and follower as part of the firearm. The clip holds the cartridges inside the magazine and is ejected on the last round. The SKS rifle uses a "stripper clip" that aligns in a channel on the face of the bolt when locked in the open position. The user aligns the clips in the channel and shoves 20 rounds down into the magazine. The stripper clip is set aside to be refilled with another 20 cartridges. Strippers are just a convenient way to reload an internal magazine rapidly.

I think the kid is really smart and was simply attempting to clean the gene pool.

However, momma belongs in jail for being a complete moron.

You're wrong. Magazines come in single and double stack format. They also come in spiral "drum" formats. The drum is a single stack wrapped into a large spiral. Magazines also come in tubular format with the cartridges lined up "nose to tail". This is common in lever action rifles and some older rim fire .22LR rifles. If you have a tubular magazine, you must never load it with "spitzer" (pointed) bullets. You employ a flat nose bullet to avoid having the bullet nose igniting the primer of the adjacent round. If one goes off, they pretty much all go off.

I still have to wonder why anyone would put a gun in a sofa unless they were scared of someone. I hope she got the gun taken away for being so stupid. Was the gun even legal?
