National Campaign Releases Statement on Emergency Contraception
NEW YORK, Mar. 13 /Christian Wire Service/ -- No Room for Contraception released the following statement today concerning the distribution of emergency contraception and of conscience clauses that ought to protect health care workers from participation in the distribution of these drugs. Mary Worthington, spokeswoman for the campaign, said:
"In lieu of forcing pharmacies and hospitals to act in contradiction to personal or religious beliefs, political leaders and public policy makers, especially those who are Catholic, should be enacting laws that protect religious freedom. Our nation was founded on that religious freedom, and certain vocal lobbyists should not be able to get away with chipping away at those rights."
"Though conscience clauses have been enacted in several states to protect physicians and nurses who do not wish to participate in abortion, these clauses must now be rewritten to include specific protection for pharmacists, hospitals and all other healthcare workers who do not wish to participate in the distribution of emergency contraception and any other chemical or barrier contraception or other products found to be objectionable, such as drugs to assist in suicide."
On the specific situation in Connecticut concerning Catholic hospitals that may be required to distribute the drug against their religious requirements, Worthington said:
"If the State of Connecticut insists on using its power to promote emergency contraception, then it should have conscience clauses for pharmacists, pharmacies, and hospitals. Other States, such as Minnesota, are considering legislation which feature conscience clauses of various sorts. Instead of blindly throwing their weight behind emergency contraception, State officials should respect the deeply held beliefs of individuals and institutions."
Worthington went on to question whether it is ethical that emergency contraception drugs be promoted in the first place.
"Its ironic that pharmacies and some hospitals are being pressured excessively to do something that many consider to be an objective moral evil, which is to provide chemicals that can cause the end of human life. These are Catholic hospitals whose religious beliefs demand that they not participate in ending the life of a newly conceived human being."
"Those who are pushing for widespread distribution of emergency contraception claim that it prevents abortion. What they fail to mention is that it certainly can prevent the implantation of a newly conceived human lifeearlier than what is medically defined as a pregnancyand this is killing. Drug companies, lobbyists and law makers know full well that many pharmacists and hospitals do not wish to distribute drugs designed to kill in this manner, and they should respect these wishes."

They have an uphill battle - there have been lots of test cases about withholding medical treatment for religious reasons... I am not aware of any big victories... They've put people in jail for refusing to participate in blood transfusions, for example.
Amazing that only 40-some years ago CT was ANTI-CONTRACEPTIVE in the Griswold case. New England, to a large extent, has turned into a moral wasteland. It may have gorgeous scenery, wonderful historical landmarks, many fine folks and some good culture, but there is plenty to be ashamed of!
>>the view that using the Plan B pill constitutes "abortion" is held by very few.
It's a view held due largely based upon ignorance. Most don't realize that a newly created human can be killed by Plan B. It may not meet the technical defintion of an abortion, but nevertheless a human may die from as a result of Plan B.
Contraception is here to stay. Thank the Almighty for it.

In the real world contraception is accepted. I, along with most others, just don't believe that there is a sentient soul involved at all.
By this definition, a "human may die" from use of ordinary birth control pills. Should they be prohibited?
I understand your belief, but my suspicions tell me it is held for utilitarian reasons (makes you feel better). Common sense and science both tell us that life is a dynamic continuum with a beginning and an end, but no sharp "steps" or "jumps".
You will be held accountable one day - and look into the faces of your children that you never met this side of eternity.
Bandwagon fallacy.
I, along with most others, just don't believe that there is a sentient soul involved at all.
What you "just believe" isn't persuasive to me at all. My conscience isn't bound by your opinions.
Good grief. Talk about judgmental.
FWIW not all contraception works that way. I can't stand here and condemn any contraception that doesn't kill a zygote/embryo, though my wife and I won't use it for other reasons. I only condemn the kind that ends life because if I said nothing I would not be true to my convictions. And I just wanted to stimulate you to think this through because of the trite reply you gave to 1stFreedom.
The good news is that there is probably no post ovulatory effect except to decrease fertilization through several methods and to actually increase the chances of implantation if there's an embryo present.
People are ignoring work by Croxatto and others that has been reported in the last 2 years. Both the pro-life and the prochoice.

I've thought it through a lot. I just don't believe there are billions and billions of sentient souls swarming the sewers and latrines of the world. Whenever the soul enters the body, no one knows.
Kinda brings that issue to the fore front, doesn't it?
I maintain that people hold this view to make themselves feel better about butchering babies. On its face, ensoulment lacks empirical provability, so we err on the side of our convenience, since obviously it's not possible that "billions and billions of sentient souls [are] swarming the sewers and latrines of the world." IOW "I can't fathom it, therefore it cannot be true."
