Politicised Islam grows in Serbia's Sandzak
Janes ^

The strategic Muslim-majority Sandzak region of Serbia and Montenegro, which borders Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina, has seen a marked increase in politicised Islam over the past few years. The trend is due to a variety of social and economic factors including political marginalisation, poverty and crime. Religious schools and an Islamic university are educating increasing numbers of young people, filling a vacuum left by failing republican and municipal administrations. There are also growing numbers of so-called Wahhabis who follow Islamic practices imported from Saudi Arabia. This group of predominately young men operating outside the traditional Islamic community, Islamska Zajednica (IZ), played a leading role in orchestrating February's flag-burning demonstrations in the region's capital, Novi Pazar, protesting against newspaper cartoons of the prophet Mohammed first published in Denmark. Political and social marginalisation is nothing new in the Sandzak, an ethnically mixed Bosniak-majority region that is considered along with Kosovo to be one of the few potential sources of conflict left in the territory of the former Yugoslavia. While Islamic radicalism remains largely a chimera for now, imams, international observers, Bosniaks (Muslim Slavs) and Serbs alike warn that disaffection with spiralling unemployment, crime and corruption could result in foreign forms of Islam gaining ever more adherents among a disillusioned younger generation.

I might be more sympathetic if I had not seen film of laughing, drunk Serb soldiers mowing down terrified Bosnian teenagers in Srebrenica. That was 1995, well before the Bosnian Muslims got "politicized."

I'm no fan of Islam. I just don't think there are any "clean hands" in that region.

And Milosevic was on trial for what he did in Slovenia and Croatia (both Christian) as well as Bosnia and Kosovo.

It was actually Serb television, incorporated into a BBC documentary. Now that you mention it, I suppose the BBC could have done a little creative editing. But you can't doctor images of people in a field being shot.

Islam is inherently politicized. In fact, it is a political movement as much as a religion.

It has grown more aggressive because of the confusion and decadence in the West, especially Western Europe; the weakness and decadence of the West, especially Western Europe; the secularization and rejection of Christianity, especially in Western Europe; and the de fact eanabling of Islamic leaders by the misguided, confused, delusional, and decadent Western Left.

Furthermore, globalization has presented opportunities and choices to the underpriveleged everywhere in the world, as never before, and many people prefer the certainty that Islam offers to the ambiguity of Western Civilization. Many prefer to the told what to think rather than having to think for themselves.

Islam is neither politicized nor emboldened by poverty, discrimination, or any of the other tired old canards of the Western Left.

Quite the contrary. It is inherently politicized, and it is emboldened by unprecedented opportunity and foolish Western enablers.

None of this is lost on militant Islamic leaders. In fact, they understand it quite well--much better than the confused, foolish and corrupt, leaders of the Western Left do.

Islamic leaders are merely seizing an unprecedented opportunity.

You need a wake up call. The Muslim ideology has unleashed a brutality not seen in the region since the SS along with their Muzzie allies in WWII.

Your comment demontrates a total hypocrisy and ignorance not to mention a sick and twisted mind.

Look back at 1300 years of muslim terror and you will understand why.

Ad hominem attacks mean nothing. Rebut the point.

That was 1995, well before the Bosnian Muslims got "politicized."

Their president, Alija Izetbegovic and other Muslims, had been jailed back in the early 1980's for Islamic anti-Yugoslav activity - he was fishing for Islamic countries support for an independent Bosnian state even then. When he got out of jail in the late '80s he formed a powerful political party. The moderate Muslims were sidelined by him and foreign supporters - including the U.S. - and so you had a recipe for ethnic problems and separatism. Media falsely advertised him as a moderate.

You know what...muslims lie like crazy to non-muslims( it is in the Koran) and I do not believe clinton either, so as far as I am concerned...Serbs did NOT kill any muslims who did not need a dirt nap anyway for killing Christians in all those little Serbian villages through-out Bosnia.

THE bosnians WERE ALL ISLAMICS terrorists, ALL OF THEM! Thye even had BINLADEN and his boys helping out!!

From the looks of it another bunch of muslim extremists is set to START another war against SERBIAN Christians in Serbia!!

I sure hope you watched that video... even if you might be a muslim....

Either way, the world is starting to see what jihad REALLY means to bosnians as well as middle easterners. It means death to non-muslims!!

AD hominem attacks are too good for the likes of you. Check out the postings (esp #16) preceding mine. You obviously know nothing of history...and more to the point nothing about the ethnocides against Serbians and more generally Christian peoples at the hands of Mooslems over the past centuries.

Oh... I know which one you're talking about. That film doesn't prove that genocide took place, and those poor people were executed near Sarajevo - not Srebrenitsa (thus severing any and all ties to that particular case).

It doesn't make it any less of a crime, but some have been using the video to "prove" that the Serbs are genocidal maniacs and that the execution of the six men is a "clear indication" that 8,000 people ("men and boys") were killed in Srebrenitsa.

Serbia has put those responsible on trial. The proceedings are underway in Belgrade as I type. I wish I could say the same for those responsible for the wholesale slaughter of Serb civilians in and around Srebrenitsa (1992-1995).
