Colonization of Palestine precludes peace
Haaretz ^ | 3/17/6 | Jimmy Carter

Posted on 03/17/2006 11:23:22 PM PST by SmithL

For more than a quarter century, Israeli policy has been in conflict with that of the United States and the international community. Israel's occupation of Palestine has obstructed a comprehensive peace agreement in the Holy Land, regardless of whether Palestinians had no formalized government, one headed by Yasser Arafat or Mahmoud Abbas, or with Abbas as president and Hamas controlling the parliament and cabinet.

The unwavering U.S. position since Dwight Eisenhower's administration has been that Israel's borders coincide with those established in 1949, and since 1967, the universally adopted UN Resolution 242 has mandated Israel's withdrawal from the occupied territories. This policy was reconfirmed even by Israel in 1978 and 1993, and emphasized by all American presidents, including George W. Bush. As part of the Quartet, including Russia, the UN and the European Union, he has endorsed a "road map" for peace. But Israel has officially rejected its basic premises with patently unacceptable caveats and prerequisites.

With Israel's approval, The Carter Center has monitored all three Palestinian elections. Supervised by a blue-ribbon commission of college presidents and distinguished jurists, they have all been honest, fair and peaceful, with the results accepted by winners and losers.

Hamas will control the cabinet and prime minister's office, but Mahmoud Abbas retains all authority and power exercised by Yasser Arafat. He still heads the PLO, the only Palestinian entity recognized by Israel, and could deal with Israeli leaders under this umbrella, independent of Hamas control. He has unequivocally endorsed the Quartet's road map. Post-election polls show that 80 percent of Palestinians still want a peace agreement with Israel and nearly 70 percent support Abbas as president.

Less brilliant words were never spoken.

Hey, Jimmah, what did you do to combat the growing threat of Islamofascism while you were president, hmmm? Oh, I forgot. You're STILL president.

Jimmy Carter is an idiot. He's supposedly acquainted with the Bible and when one looks there, one searches in vain for any mention of the word "Palestine." To the contrary, the Land Of Israel was promised to the Jewish people by God as a divine blessing. It is never Israel that has stood in the way of peace but her enemies who have never given up their dreams to bring about her destruction.

I think he really believes these numbers, and that's the trouble with this guy. That and the fact that he a leftist pantload, much like Michael Moore.

Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton, Southern Democrats all, and all of them big disappointments.

Hey Carter, you peanut brain moron! There is no such thing as palestine. In the 60's, it was just parts of Egpyt and Jordan.

don't forget Harry S. Truman. Another huge disappointment who didn't have the balls to let McArthur push those commie bastards back into china where they belonged.

I agree... sort of. As long as the Arab bedouins that have come to be called Palestinians are allowed to colonize Israeli land, there will be no peace.

An dhow is this any better than what the Islamonuts are claiming?

The map tells the whole story. You've got this gigantic swath of territory called the slammite world which stretches from the wall of China to the west coast of Africa and tens of degrees of lattitude up an down, and then this tiny sliver of land called Israel which is hard to even find on a map, and the relentless crybaby act for the last 60 years has been over that tiny sliver. My advice to Israel: put out a $25 bounty on "palestinians". It's a proven method for reducing populations of varmint species.

I.e., no matter what, it's Israel's fault.

I can't believe you are drawing moral equivalence between the Bible, and people that dress their toddlers as suicide bombers for parades.

Let's see here. Israel has been invaded multiple times by Arab armies, fought back, and conquered new territory each time---at one time including all of the Sinai penisula up to the Nile--and then they repeatedly GIVEN IT ALL BACK, except for territory deemed strategically necessary for defense against future incursions, and the Muslims are STILL pissing and moaning about the 1947 borders.

Oh, yes- and Jimmah Kahtah is an idiot.

"There is no such thing as palestine"

There is and there was, ever since 1917, though the territory has been redefined over the years.

"In the 60's, it was just parts of Egpyt and Jordan."

The Palestinian territory defined by the 1947 UN Resolution 181 was occupied by Egypt and Jordan following the first Arab-Israeli War (1947-1949) to 1967.

"and then they repeatedly GIVEN IT ALL BACK"

If I recall correctly, it was in return for peace treaties with THE ARABS WHO WANT TO DESTROY ISRAEL -- peace treaties which have endured. But then Israel stopped. I guess Israel is no longer interested in peace, huh?

"except for territory deemed strategically necessary for defense against future incursions"

Strategically necessary? You still repeating that garbage? It's a land grab.

If territory is strategically necessary, let Israel trade land west of the Green Line.

Don't be asinine. If the Israelis had wanted to grab land, they would have kept it all, and been perfectly within their rights to do so.
