Ananova: Does Mozart help newborn babies?

Doctors are to run trials to see if playing classical music to newborn babies helps them recover from the trauma of birth.

The decision follows a pioneering project at Kosice-saca hospital in eastern Slovakia where Mozart and other classical music is piped to newborns via headphones in the maternity ward.

Doctors there believe the music is the perfect way to keep newborn babies healthy and relaxed after the traumatic experience of being born.

And now experts at Weill Medical College at New York's Cornell University will run a study to medically prove whether the music of Mozart affects levels of stress, heart rate, and motor activity in premature babies.

I have no idea about babies and classical music.

However, I can tell you from recent personal experience that our 8 month old puppy loves classical music.

She's a completely "wild" German Shorthair youth most of the time; but turn on the classical music and she immediately calms down and drifts off to sleep.

Needless to say, we've been listening to much more classical music than normal around the house...LOL!

somewhere, a young, future law school grad is going to be dreaming up the "Mozart defense" for future menaces to society...

I does help. I know that my mother listened to the Piano Concerto No. 1 b of Tchaikovsky while she was pregnant with me. This concert was played by the American pianist Van Cliburn that won the the famous first quadrennial International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. Although I am 38 now I still have a deep relationship with this music.

Mozart's ingenious music for sure has the same effects on babies (and their mothers). My wife and I used this experience on our own three kids and flooded them with classical music. It worked out perfectly and today they all love to play their instruments. Besides of this - they do quite well on it for their age.

Very interesting. I should try it on my baby (and two older kids.) I got zilch as far a musical genes but I do love beautiful music. Maybe one of them would get some musical ability benefit from it. Although I am 38 now I still have a deep relationship with this music. It's embedded into your brain.

Anyone with broadband can have a bottomless supply of streaming classical music at no charge by visiting www.beethoven.com and just letting it roll.

No, it's not just Beethoven. It's all classical.

It's embedded into your brain.

Yep! It is somehow a "basic" program. Something like my very own "operating system". Just like the "DOS", "Linux" or "Windows" on our computers, but much more beautiful.

It doesn't matter if we talk about Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Bach, Beethoven or other good composers. They were all kissed by God. Therefore their music is the best we can give to our children.

Regarding your children and classical music:

When I was a baby, I spent a lot of time around my Aunt (my Dad's younger sis). She played the piano, and according to all accounts, I used to sit "under" the piano while she was playing when I was a toddler.

I went on to "beg" my parents to allow me to take piano lessons; I ended up taking lessons for thirteen years (including college).

So, my earlier comments regarding my puppy aside, I truly believe that early exposure to music probably does have a long term effect on children.

That's a great analogy.

Very nice.

I think I'm going to try it. I've got some classical CD's around. It can't hurt plus I enjoy it. A long time ago, I heard Dr. Laura recommend it as well as a calming effect on kids--just like your doggie. I could use a good dose of calm myself most days.

HeHe!

I saw the pictures of your kids on your FR-HP. I have three boys in the same age. My oldest one will be 9 in Juli. They seem have the same interests like your boys with one fundamental difference: They are only interested in venomous snakes... (but for sure not allowed to keep them at home).

;-)

You'll have to post some pictures of them on your home page someday. Send me an FR mail if you do.

I have to bookmark this.

I also have to get back to you with an editorial my wife had given me today from a homeschool magazine. It jokingly covered the topic of prenatal education! I thought the website was joke...well, I'll get back to you.

Thanks for that. I think I've heard about starting them off really, really young--reading and music.

That's very good. Did she do those others on your home page?

So, how many languages do you speak?
