It was only a matter of time. The illegal immigration has been going on virtually uninhibited for so long that, eventually, a law passed to curtail it would be a bit loony.
Although the rights of due process under American law apply only to American citizens (not illegal immigrants), that this passed bill would provide no means by which any immigrant with a visa can provide their ID before being deported for any reason is ludicrous.
Although I am in support of President Bush on most matters, there are some areas where I just can't along. Illegal immigration ("Doing the jobs Americans won't do," eh? Well, they're jobs Americans USED to do before illegal immigrants started doing them for dirt cheap prices that employers wouldn't be able to get away with a normal citizen). Spending (here's a hint; curtailing the growth of spending is not the same as cutting spending). Campaign finance reform (First Amendment issue, bub).
Considering Bush's stance on the illegal immigration issue, it's possible he might veto this. I wouldn't get your hopes up, as Bush has yet to veto a SINGLE bill to cross his desk. Fortunately, if this bill becomes law, the SCOTUS (Supreme Court Of The United States) will probably be brought to decide its constitutionality in court. And the odds of it being struck down in the Supreme Court are good, as the two newest Justices - Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Samuel Alito - are both strict interpreters of the Constitution.
I have to say that this whole illegal immigration mess would clear up almost immediately if two things happened.
1) A wall is built, spanning the entire length of the border with Mexico (and I mean a REAL wall, not the dinky barbed wire fences that you use to keep cows in. Something like the wall between Israel and Syria). The one for Canada can come later.
2) Track down those employing illegal immigrants and sentence them with jail time for aiding criminals (which illegal immigrants technically are, as entering the country illegally is a crime). The labor market for illegals would dry up in a heartbeat.
I have to say illegal immigration is a slap in the face to immigrants who came here legally and worked hard to get where they are. Illegals can simply get a fake ID and start working immediately (with help from the ACLU at that). Oh, and they also go to an Emergency Room for everything. They get free care, and the taxpayers have to pick up the bill.
Meh.

I'm all for stopping illegal immigration, but does this law go a bit too far?

This past week, Congress passed the first of a new slew of immigration laws, law HR4437. While many don't mind them cracking down and appreciate the new temporary worker programs being set up and laws to give many illegal immigrants visas, this new law may ruin the lives of American born citizens who simply LOOK like they may be from another country.
I agree, this abuse has gone on for long enough. It is time to clean house, and if this President has to be thrown out in order to get it done, then so be it.
Well, number one, the sections of code to which he repeatedly refers are not quotations of the sections, but actually his own interpretation (or whoever he got his talking ponts from) of the code. It's hard for me to get too worked up over what he thinks of the law. If he had actually quoted the law, and then added his criticism of it, I would be more likely to want to listen to what he has to say.

That's exactly why many of my hispanic friends don't want the illegal aliens here. That and they don't want their wages driven down any more than I do.

The illegal aliens and the criminals who hire them and the criminals who harbor them are getting out in the street making their desires known. It is way past time those of us who support the rule of law and secure borders did the same.
Join Veterans for Secure Borders, The Minuteman Project, Latino Americans for Immigration Reform, Mothers Against Illegal Aliens, and other groups protesting amnesty for these criminals, and demanding the government protect our borders.

Its called impeachment; and while it shouldn't happen for a bogus thing like the anto-terrorist measures that those on the DU want to impeach him for; it should be considered if he continues to harbour the criminal importation and use of illegal labor. He is the nations chief enforcement officer and he has not only failed to enforce the law, but has actively undermined the effort.
a) Don't be a criminal.
b) Don't be an illegal.
You're safe.
Let's repeat that for everyone who might not realize it. For example, the post includes this:
Section 201, 4, iv: Any immigrant or suspected alien who cannot prove legal residence or citizenship can be deported for any criminal activity in the past 15 years regardless of the previous law limiting that date back to Sept. 30'th 1996. (In order to prove citizenship, you must provide a government issues ID a social security card, and a birth certificate. If 2 or all of these are missing or found to be fraudulent, YOU WILL BE DEPORTED, regardless if you legitimately cannot find them or if they were stolen.)
On the other hand, here is the actual text of the referenced Section: `(iv) regardless of whether the conviction was entered before, on, or after September 30, 1996, and notwithstanding any other provision of law (including any effective date).
Obviously, it has nothing to do with people being deported because their identification was stolen. It just says you don't get a pass because your conviction was a certain number of years ago. This is hysterical nonsense. There should be an examination and discussion of this legislation, but this does not provide a vehicle for it.

I work at a highly ranked world known college, (Not Yale, thank God), and while in the break room one day last week, two people who speak Mexican (it's NOT Spanish, ya know), were in there with me. We were all talking in English.
One of them said something to the other in Mexican, as I was walking out, after getting my turn at the coffee machine. The 2nd one said "Oh, it's ok, he'd better learn Spanish."
It took just about ALL my brains to not wheel around throw my coffee at the fella and remind him that the United States of America has a language of the land, and it's NOT Spanish, or Mexican. Even in Texas, we speak our version of English, and if he wants to have communications with me, that's what he WILL speak.
I was very very very VERY ticked off, and it did in fact, ruin my otherwise wonderful day.
While no one is much more anti-immigration than I, why don't we have a small wager on your line of thought?
I'll bet $300 that he finishes out his term unless he dies or falls ill.
Thats $100 for each year left of his term.
Just for kicks, I will pay triple if he is impeached and removed from office.
