Thousands are sent back to Portugal

Thousands are sent back to Portugal
BETWEEN 15,000 and 22,000 Portuguese illegal immigrants could be deported from Canada. An unprecedented operation has started to expatriate all the illegal immigrants working in the country.
In February, the Ambassador to the country, João Silveira de Carvalho, received an official communication from the Immigration Ministry saying that all Portuguese working in Canada without a permit would be ordered to return immediately to their country.
The first Portuguese families have been put on aeroplanes and forced to leave. Some of the families had been living in Canada for several years and many had already bought houses there. They were given only a few days notice to make preparations, pack their bags, and get rid of possessions they couldn't take on the flight to Lisbon. A large number of the group being deported went to Canada to meet the demands of a booming construction industry, particularly in Toronto. Estimates state that about 75 per cent of the workers are in the country illegally.
"If you have bought a new home or a new condo, you know that the waiting times for getting a place just keep on getting longer and longer," Pedro Barata of the Portuguese National Congress said. "I think that the more we deport people who are needed in the construction industry, the longer those waits are going to be."
Some estimates say that 15,000 people are working illegally in Ontario's construction and hospitality industries, and the Canada-wide figure is 300,000. Immigration sources said there will not be an amnesty. The federal agency said they have a legal duty to remove people who have come to the country without following the proper procedures.

Hi Doug! Great effort you have here. I hope it is effective. When did the word "illegal" cease to mean illegal/criminal!?

You think watching him is torture, try living in his home state. Arrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhh!
It wasn't jack that said that just to set the record straight.
Thanks again! Read that one (wasn't too long!) Most interesting was the end where complaints were made about "changes in policy". Does beg the conclusion, that if we don't enforce our laws, people consider them to be only "guidelines"!!
Howie Carr thanks Ted "Fat Boy" Kennedy almost daily for the immigration act of 1965. Go to fatboy.cc for Howie's Ted Kennedy stuff.
THANK YOU!!!
BLESS YOU!!!
I can't wait... someone would definitely get an *sscap on my flagpole... if the Dominicans, Jamaicans, Africans, Albanians and Puerto Ricans don't get them first... that is.
Why do I keep hearing "they would have to go back", "they deserve this", "they had a hard trial getting here", It's so hard on the employers that employ them illegally or don't pay them what they should...they, they, they. Hello? How about us and the effect on us.
You don't want to see those figures Tony.
Please tell me you're kidding...
Which bill do you prefer?
I didn't get the bulletin when we changed it.
Hi PT...
I know these are tough decisions. Tony is right. This problem has so many angles and people tugging that there is no "simple" solution. I think there are general principles we should follow. And some people will think whatever is done won't be "fair". But our Congress should have a National American perspective...but NOT a nativist perspective. That's all I'm saying. While I like a lot of the Judiciary committee bill, I agree with "cute as a button" Sen. Sessions. We should NOT be paying benefits for anyone illegal. Period. I'm not even sure we should be paying money for non-citizens. If you want to come here, pay for the privilege. But people who want to come and make their way should be allowed to do so if they want to do it the American way. And maybe there will be some "line jumping". It wouldn't be the first time it's happened and I'll bet you it won't be the last either. But agree on the principles on the rest is straight-forward if not easy.
