JILL CARROLL RELEASED UNHARMED (Update: Jill praises mujahedeen in new video statement!)
SBS New ^ | 3/31/06 | SBS News

American reporter Jill Carroll has been released after a three-month hostage ordeal in Iraq and was with US officials inside Baghdad's fortified Green Zone.

-snip-

Video interview

A video posted on the internet, which could not be independently verified, showed Ms Carroll in an interview apparently conducted by her captors before they released her.

"Did you think the American army or the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) would save you at any time," a muffled male voice asked Ms Carroll in accented English.

"Sometimes I thought maybe that they might come, they might find me, they might find a way to know where I am and come get me," she answered.

"Why did not they save you?" asked the interviewer.

"I think the mujahedeen are very smart and even with all the technology and all the people that the American army has here, they still are better at knowing how to live and work here, more clever," she said

"Does this mean something to you?" the man questioning her asked.

"It makes very clear that the mujahedeen are the ones that will win in the end," Ms Carroll said in the video.

At the end of the eight and a half minute tape, the same man read out a statement in Arabic.

"The mujahedeen in the land of the two rivers announce the liberation of the journalist Jill Carroll... after the US forces and the CIA failed to find her making their ineptitude obvious to the whole world," he said.

"We liberate this journalist today after the American government met some of our demands by releasing some of our women prisoners."

Oh, ug. Glad it got pulled. Whatever else I think of her, I don't want her hurt or killed. (Jailed, maybe...)

I saw what snippet they showed on FOX News this afternoon and my intial reaction was "gag me with a spoon".

She's as goofy and ridiculous as these Christian Peace Team members.

I have just read through the accounts for tomorrows papers that are up on the NYT and WashPost websites.

I would never criticize what she said while still under control of her captors...the video that they made and released via internet.

What was very troubling to me was the video widely broadcast today that was made by the Sunni party when she entered their headquarters immediately after being dropped on the street. Nothing that I read made it entirely clear whether she still felt in jeopardy at that point. I am inclined to think she did. If not, I would judge her statements emphasizing how well she was treated and "not threatened" to be contemptible. She seems to be in good shape and needs to come forward quickly with a full statement either repudiating or standing behind today's remarks.

At some point while she was inside the Sunni party headquarters, the U.S. military was called and sent a convoy to retrieve her. The newspapers do not make clear the exact sequence. It seems plausible that she did her interview there before the Army arrived, perhaps before it was called. My impression is that she may not have been entirely confident that she was safe.

Good evening.
"You're surrounded by your captors."

Do you mean the same captors that fed her, let her go to the bathroom and let her take showers? The ones who didn't treat her badly?

Aren't they the same ones who took an American peacenik out and executed him shortly before good Coalition troopies rescued his fellow travelers, other peaceniks who finally issued Fonda-esque thanks to the men who rescued them.

She isn't surrounded by the enemy now, let's see what she has to say.

The only reason she is alive is because she is more valuable to the terrorists alive that she would be dead.
They milked her for her immediate value and now they let her milk herself for the propaganda value. What a stupid cow she is.

Good evening.
"The translator that died during the "kidnapping" was Christian"

I didn't know that. It would explain her demeanor somewhat, wouldn't it.

Good evening
"Wonder what her translator thinks."

I've read many times that she speaks Arabic. Why did she need a translator?

Jill Carroll wondered from day to day whether she would grow old or die a hostage.

"It was like falling off a cliff for three months, waiting to hit the ground," the 28-year-old American reporter said Thursday after her kidnappers released her.

A poll should be done among all of us with the following question: If you were caught by Mujahadeen, would you praise them or praise the Americans?

She lived in fear for her life, every day for 3 months:

>>>Three months without exercise had made her face round. Her captors had treated her well, she said, and she never dared turn down their offers of meals or candy for fear of giving offense. I'm fat, she said.<<<
