Sen. John McCain gave a big thumbs up last night to demonstrators planning to march across the Brooklyn Bridge today in support of comprehensive immigration reform. "If such demonstrations continue, I think we will have a bill for the President to sign soon," the Arizona Republican declared at an Irish and American flag-studded town hall meeting in the Bronx sponsored by the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform.

"The more debate, the more demonstrations, the more likely we will prevail," he told more than 3,000 cheering supporters - many clad in green-and-white shirts - who packed the St. Barnabas High School auditorium in Wakefield

Dublin pushes for U.S. immigration reform

The Irish government this week stepped more forcefully into America's immigration reform debate when it announced a grant of €30,000 (approximately $36,000) to aid the work of the recently formed Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform (ILIR).

The money comes as Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform is readying a series of meetings in three East Coast urban areas designed to drum up support for the McCain/Kennedy immigration bill, one of several significant proposals already written or in the pipeline on Capitol Hill.

Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Edward Kennedy (D-MA) are presenting the immigration bill.

Kennedy Leads Irish Rally in Support of Immigration Reform

Today 1600 Irish Americans – including 900 from Massachusetts – descended on the Capitol in support of the McCain-Kennedy plan for comprehensive immigration reform. Kennedy addressed the group to thank them for their dedication and give them an update as to where the negotiations stand in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

I think you've misunderstood McCain. He isn't talking about a bill banning illegal immigration, he's talking about his support for a guest worker program/amnesty.
