Live round on desk blows off part of hand
VENTURA – A teacher who kept a 40mm round on his desk as a paperweight blew off part of his hand when he apparently used the object to try to squash a bug, authorities say.
The 5-inch-long round, which Robert Colla had found while hunting years ago, exploded Monday while Colla was teaching 20 to 25 students at an adult education class. Part of Colla's right hand was severed and he suffered severe burns and minor shrapnel wounds to his forearms and torso, fire Capt. Tom Weinell said. No one else was injured. He was reported in stable condition at a hospital.
Oh man that one is REALLY close to being a "Darwin Award" winner.
Someone need(ed) a basic gun safety class.

We had a kid in highschool years ago the smacked a 22 round with a hammer to "see if he could get it to fire". Yup, sure did....fired right into his stomach.
So in the years since it was found, no veteran noticed the live round and called the local bomb squad?
If it's not blue, and the guy says he found it in the woods, it'll probably go boom.

My school friend, who is now a teacher did the same thing, the bullet caught him in the knee.

This is great! I finally have something to replace my old saying of, "If guns kill people, then spoons make Rosie O'Donnell fat."
In a .22 rimfire "free discharge", (not confined by a barrel and breech -- as when thrown in a fire) the brass is usualy more dangerous than the bullet. (Being lighter, it attains a higher velocity...)
During the last battle in the village where they're being overrun by the Panzers..
...didn't the US soldiers take mortar rounds and hit their primers against concrete to arm them and hurl them at the tanks like grenades?
If this teacher had watched and remembered that part in the movie (or even understood the construction of bullets & other firearms ammuniton),
he'd have known that the primers are located directly in the middle of the base and should NEVER be struck by or against anything
