Here's an article that's more than interesting; maybe there's hope, after all:

In a stunning setback, the Council on American-Islamic Relations' defamation suit against Andrew Whitehead of Anti-CAIR has been dismissed with prejudice.

Former Taliban envoy warns of more bloodshed unless U.S. negotiates

KABUL, Afghanistan -- Violence will persist in Afghanistan unless the U.S.-led coalition starts to negotiate with the toppled Taliban regime and other armed groups, the Taliban's former ambassador to Pakistan told The Associated Press.

The warning from Abdul Salam Zaeef, a former Guantanamo Bay prisoner, came this week as fighting continued in the Afghan countryside. A U.S. soldier was killed Friday in a gunbattle and suspected Taliban militants killed six Afghan policemen, afterward burning four of their bodies.

In recent months, Afghanistan has seen a surge in bombings and shootings targeting coalition troops and Afghan forces, particularly in southern Taliban strongholds near the Pakistan border. The violence has grown even though many former Taliban fighters have been welcomed by the government under an amnesty program.

Zaeef's call was rejected Friday by U.S. and Afghan authorities, who said military action was the only way to bring to justice the militants with blood on their hands.

"We don't negotiate with terrorist organizations and the Taliban extremists have committed themselves to violence," U.S. military spokesman Col. Tom Collins said.

In January, President Hamid Karzai urged Taliban leader Mullah Omar to "get in touch" if he wants to talk peace. A day later, a statement purportedly issued by Omar turned down the offer and warned of increased Taliban attacks.

Karzai spokesman Khaleeq Ahmed said Friday that the Afghan government has a reconciliation commission that has encouraged more than 1,000 ex-Taliban members to embrace the new constitution and government and reject violence.

But not every Taliban is welcome, he said. "There are those who have burned schools and killed doctors, nurses and many other innocent Afghans."

Zaeef, however, said American "arrogance" was preventing the U.S.-led coalition dealing with the Taliban leaders.

The Taliban government hosted Osama bin Laden at the time of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington. A subsequent American-led military campaign toppled the regime and sent bin Laden into hiding.

However, Taliban resistance to the U.S.-backed regime has continued. At least 224 U.S. military personnel have died in Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan and Uzbekistan since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001. Of those, at least 141 were killed by hostile action.

To counter the bloodshed, now often from ambushes or roadside bombs, U.S.-led coalition forces have swept through numerous trouble spots. By late July, more than 9,000 NATO-led troops will be stationed in volatile southern provinces like Kandahar and Helmand, up from the current number of 6,000. Some 19,000 U.S. soldiers are now in Afghanistan.

Zaeef said military action against insurgents will only exacerbate Afghan instability.

"I think the problem (of violence) is increasing and people have to decide whether they will solve it through use of power or negotiation," Zaeef told The Associated Press on Thursday at his heavily guarded house on the outskirts of the capital, Kabul. "Afghanistan needs reconciliation but I don't think the Americans want to negotiate."

"We know the Taliban and (Gulbuddin) Hekmatyar (the renegade former premier now wanted by the United States) can do something (against the coalition) and create further problems," Zaeef said. "Afghanistan is not like Germany and Japan."

The death of the U.S. soldier on Friday was in Dihrawad, a district in the central Uruzgan province about 270 miles southwest of Kabul. Gunmen struck while coalition troops were inspecting a weapons cache. An Afghan soldier was wounded.

In a particularly grisly attack late Thursday, suspected Taliban militants raided a police checkpoint building on the Kandahar-Herat road in the Kandahar province district of Navand.

Two police were killed and their bodies set on fire on the building's roof and two more slain policemen were found burned inside the post, said provincial highway police chief Raz Mohammed Khan. Two others were shot dead outside the building before the militants fled.

"This is a very bad incident which we believe was carried out by the Taliban," Khan said.

Islam bans cremating bodies, and Muslim clerics were enraged by a video broadcast by Australian TV in October purportedly showing American soldiers burning two dead Taliban fighters.

Zaeef was arrested in January 2002 and sent to Guantanamo Bay for questioning about the Sept. 11 attacks and the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen. After his release in late 2005, he said he refused to cooperate and never was charged with a crime.

"Now I am here under observation of the government, I have been away from my family for almost four years, and 47 people have been killed in my village in Kandahar (since 2001)," he said. "I am very tired of Afghanistan and its three decades of war and killing, which is still continuing."

Afghan president blames 'foreigners' for country's continuing violence

QALAY-I-NAW, Afghanistan Afghan President Hamid Karzai says unspecified "foreigners" are responsible for providing funding and weapons to fan his country's raging insurgency. Karzai, on a visit to a far western provincial capital, says Afghans could not be held responsible for the spike in bombings and shootings during recent months.

Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for many of the attacks.

Karzai did not single out any country or group. But he and other Afghan officials have repeatedly called on neighboring Pakistan to do more to stop Taliban and al-Qaida-linked militants from using Pakistani territory prepare for attacks in Afghanistan. Pakistan rejects Afghanistan's claims.

Afghan and Pakistani officials have said that top Taliban and al-Qaida leaders, including Osama bin Laden, may be at large in the mountainous border region that stretches nearly 15-hundred miles.

NATO to expand presence in Afghanistan considerably this year

MOSCOW: A top NATO general said the Alliance will expand its presence in Afghanistan and by the end of the year will assume complete responsibility over the peacekeeping operation there.

"NATO presence in Afghanistan will expand considerably this year," NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, General James Jones told a news conference Kazinform refers to Itar-Tass.

"Terrorists met in Toronto to plot U.S. attack: FBI affidavit"

The Associated Press
ATLANTA (Apr 22, 2006)

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Syed Haris Ahmed and Ehsanul Islam Sadequee, both U.S. citizens who grew up in the Atlanta area, met with at least three other targets of FBI terrorism investigations during a trip to Toronto in March 2005, an FBI agent's affidavit said.

The affidavit said the men discussed attacks against oil refineries and military bases and planned to travel to Pakistan for military training at a terrorist camp, which authorities said Ahmed then tried to do.

Ahmed, who was indicted on suspicion of giving material support to terrorism, was being held at an undisclosed location."

ARTICLE SNIPPET #2: "Sadequee, 19, who is accused of making materially false statements in connection with a U.S. government terrorism investigation, was arrested in Bangladesh and was en route to New York City to be arraigned."

ARTICLE SNIPPET #3: "When Sadequee's suitcase was searched at JFK, agents found a CD-ROM containing encrypted files the FBI has been unable to decode and a map of the Washington area hidden in the lining, the affidavit said."

ARTICLE SNIPPET #4: "In March 2006, Ahmed then told agents they had met with extremists and plotted how to disrupt military and commercial communications and traffic by disabling the Global Positioning System, the affidavit said."

Excellent post Lucy - thank you for it. Far too many pubbies who have NOT responded to the question of legalizing illegals and ditto for those who have DECLINED to comment on legalizing illegals (pansies who fear alienating those who voted them into office). The group that "MAY" rule out legalizing illegals is also of concern to me. "May" can turn into "may not" in a heartbeat, pending whose influence they are trying to appease. Those strongly wanting to uphold existing federal law appear to be be on the short list. I suggest we keep this list updated and continue posting it - especially on the main thread via JP's thread - so those voting on this issue can be held accountable for their action (or inaction in protecting our sovereignty).

"14 injured in Ukrainian supermarket explosions"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "KIEV, April 22 (Reuters) - Twin explosions struck two supermarkets in Ukraine's second largest city Kharkiv on Saturday, injuring 14 people, Interfax Ukraine news agency reported.

Interfax, quoting police in the eastern city, said the explosions occurred virtually simultaneously around noon in the two stores -- about 1 km (half a mile) apart.

Other reports from the city said the blasts were caused by explosive devices detonating in the area where shoppers are requested to leave packages. Police and Ukraine's Emergencies Ministry were investigating the incidents."

That's absolutely right, MamaDearest. This is what it's all about. You are either for American sovereignty or not, short and simple.

Hear that politicians? The Minutemen and their supporters and other active groups rallied against illegal immigration have only just begun.
