Many in GOP Will Sit Out Bush Talk (Grassroots Angry Over Amnesty)
Los Angeles Times ^ | April 23, 2006 | Christopher Goffard and Jean Pasco

Posted on 04/23/2006 5:27:56 AM PDT by nj26

When President Bush arrives in Irvine on Monday morning to pitch his immigration reform plan, one of his party's best-known local standard-bearers will be maintaining a respectful — and politically careful — distance.

Dana Rohrabacher, the nine-term Republican congressman from Huntington Beach, generally supports the president, but disagrees with his immigration policies. So Rohrabacher plans to sit out Bush's speech to the Orange County Business Council.

"I don't want to be behind him looking glum and not applauding," Rohrabacher said. "So as not to be rude to the president — which I think is inexcusable — I think I'll just be staying away."

Rohrabacher's remarks reflect deep unhappiness within the GOP toward Bush's immigration stance, particularly in Republican Orange County, which is famous as a caldron of border-crackdown sentiment and where many Republicans criticize his guest-worker plan as amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Bush's decision to speak here might prove an embarrassing miscalculation, said John J. Pitney, a government professor at Claremont McKenna College who used to live in Orange County and worked for the national GOP.

"I'm not sure they had their O.C. antennae up," he said of White House schedulers. "They don't realize how complicated this issue is. It's possible this is a Daniel-in-the-lions'-den moment, but that's not really characteristic of this administration."

The Wall Street Journal editorial board and open borders elistists inside the Beltway have never worked a real job in their life. They have no clue.

"Rounding up and deporting 12 million people is nearly impossible and it certainaly will not happen before November."

Who said it had to happen overnight??? Getting rid of all of them won't be easy however 10-15-20 years from now once all privelages have been squashed and once employers learn that it doesn't pay to hire illegals the problem will take care of itself.

Thank you for stating the TRUTH and for echoing my feelings and millions of other conservatives regarding this issue. I am sick of supporting a party that talks a good game but does NOTHING when it comes to this issue as well as America's energy needs. The best the President can come up with is: "Americans are addicted to oil, we need to conserve." He sounds EXACTLY like Jimmy Carter: It is Americas fault; "conserve energy; turn down your thermostats to 65 degrees and wear a sweater!"

Instead of saying: "America is experiencing an energy crisis because the Democrats and environmental wackos have been preventing us from doing all within our power to become energy INDEPENDENT, our enemies are also using energy as a weapon against America. Therefore, in light of this and for the sake of our national security, I have today by Executive Order, ordered Anwar and other oil-rich areas including off shore drilling to be open to exploration and drilling. I have also ordered the building of a number of new oil refineries that are needed to refine the oil we now have and will have in the future. lastly, By Executive Order, for the sake of National Security, I am ordering the building of 20 new Nuclear Power plants that will help to augment and offset our nations need for energy."

That is what I want THIS president to say and do about the problem, otherwise gas is going to be $10 a gallon and we will all be reduced to ridding bicycles and horses to work.

But instead of the above; we will get: politics as usual and THE BIG LIE: "Vote for us because we are better than them."

I won't say Bush is a "terrible" president, but he certainly has been almost completely worthless to conservatives. What sucks the most is that we put him where he is.

And don't forget the Muslim illegals.. many Palestinians. New York and New Jersey are full of them.

As far as I can tell, Bush's "guest worker" (amnesty) plan has no provision to block them from getting citizenship, as well.

I believe the one thing this thread illustrates it that a significant part of the base believes Bush has failed them on the issue of illegal immigration as well as other key areas (the budget, energy, etc.).

As he has done so often, Bush has let others define him on illegal immigration.

This does not bode well for the 2006 elections.

"administration's goal is to quietly make the current crisis go away without signifcant change in policy."

If this is true, then why was this thread started in the first place? Isn't this entire thread about Bush going to LA to give a speech on illegal immigration? How is that "quietly make the current crisis go away"?

So be it.

With G.W. now I see no difference.

"By the way, I reported you for posting abuse given your prior post with a personal attack."

Fear is a terrible motivator. Your "personal attack" was merely a difference of opinion and in no way was it personal. As a practical matter, those who seek to destroy our country by dismantling it are hysterical "scardy cats"...nothing personal about that.

Grow up.

All I know is this; American citizens have put these politicians into power in order to enact "The will of THE PEOPLE" i.e., American citizens. If, as is the case, they willfully refuse to do this and instead serve/do the will of those who are NOT citizens, NOT “the people,” then they should/MUST be voted out of office because they are not doing “the peoples will” but their own in order to maintain their POSITIONS and JOBS.

If we boot enough of them out of power, maybe, just maybe they will get the message: they are there to serve America and AMERICANS, NOT themselves and agents of foreign governments.

Additionally, much of the nonsense going on in state houses are going to have implications at the federal level. Reverse 'coattails' if you will.

You're right about that. Here in Iowa, the Republicans in the state house replaced their conservative leader with a RINO. She acted to appease the democrats by giving in on the budget. Big raises to teachers, eliminating the cut in income tax on retirees, stuff like that. The democrats walked away from the "compromise."

Funny how democrats can find the spine do to things like that, but conservatives are always being told how they must compromise with bad ideas.

The reality of the situation is this. Democrats lure Republicans out on a limb with the "prevailing wisdom" that you must move to the center to win. This ticks off the base. The dems then refuse to compromise, thereby sawing off that limb.

"I'm not sure they had their O.C. antennae up,"

This administration must have had their antenna broken shortly after their second term began ... Harriet Miers, Katrina, immigration ... they've been stumbling around for the better part of two years now.

"9/11 is certain to be repeated thanks to President George W. Bush's unwillingness to close our border, and an immigration policy that has allowed 100,000 new legal Muslims immigrants to the US annually since 9-11."

That's a very good point. We face two problems - illegals from Mexico, who are primarily here for economic reasons, and Muslims immigrants, with even lesser skills who yearn for the U.S. to become an Islamic republic some day.

While much of the problem has been created by the likes of Ted Kennedy, Bush has shown little leadership on this issue. A big difference between Bush and Reagan (and there are many) is Bush's unwillingness or inability to communicate with the American people.

..easy there, KC

Quote me in context, please

I said that DHS and ICE have little or no time to dispel any suspicions of that nature.

first rule of negotiation is to make the other side think, that there's a point where you're willing to walk away

And the last rule is to have point where you actually will walk away.

All this fear mongering about the WoT, Hillary, etc is just cover to enable the continuation of business as usual. What the 'bots don't realize is that none of this matters if the basic root-core of US society is so corrupted that it ceases to function as a sovereign nation.

For some reason, I never see any reference to Maslow's hierarchy of needs on these threads. While it's true that the WoT deals with basic survival as well, illegal immigration is the larger immediate threat - everything else, such as !Hillary!, et al, are further up the pyramid:

The crux of the matter is that Bush/Rove does not understand that there IS a crisis.

Don't forget the Dubai Ports Fiasco or this continuing energy mess. I forgot who said this, but I believe this to be very accurate; "This is the most politically tone deaf administration in all American History"!

Right on! If his executive power won't allow him to do those things himself, he can call for them early and often.
