Castro could drill off Florida coast (China will drill 45 miles from Florida)

Castro could drill off Florida coast U.S. lawmakers aren't the only ones who, because of spiraling oil and gas prices and an unstable commodities market, have been studying the possibility of producing more domestic energy. Fidel Castro has also taken an interest, and his ambitions will, in a surprisingly short period of time, bring the Cuban drilling program much closer to the Florida coast.

Who can blame him? Castro has for years looked for new opportunities to develop his economy in the face of our trade embargo. He could only expect to rely on Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez's oil and gas giveaway for so long. So, with the intention of claiming billions of dollars in new revenues and reducing his country's dependence on foreign energy, Castro has taken to the high seas in an effort to acquire and produce as much oil and gas as he can.

But there's a rub: Cuba has neither the capacity nor the technical capability to produce this energy by itself. Castro has called in contractors from Canada, Spain, Norway -- even China -- to do it for him.

And not only has Cuba convened its own little United Nations to help get at vital and abundant supplies of offshore energy, it has chosen tracts of real estate in the Gulf of Mexico as close as 45 miles from Florida. Forty-five miles is just a bit farther than the distance between the University of Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

Imagine what Castro is thinking as we spend our time quarreling over whether we should produce American energy 100, 150 or 250 miles from the Florida coast while he makes arrangements to set up shop hundreds of miles closer. He must love that we've allowed emotion to win out over reason, facts to be dwarfed by fear and our nation's energy policy to be driven by unreasonable environmental concerns.

JOHN E. PETERSON, representative, 5th Congressional District, Penn.

The Chinese will drill 45 miles off our coast for oil...and yet we will not.

We are destroying our selves and there are predators out there waiting for their chance to do us in. Only internally can we give them that opportunity and, tragically, we are doing so.

This is really disturbing, first the Mexicans drill in the Gulf and now the Chinese off of Florida.

The environmentalists are going to take down this country one way or another. I heard Rush say that the date for Earth Day was picked because it was Lenin's birth date.

as close as 45 miles from Florida

What happened to our 200K territorial exclusion zone?

Also, using horizontal drilling, the may end up in South Beach!

Cuba is only 90 or so miles off Florida. I'd imagine the 45 miles isn't a coincidence, being half of 90.

These dictators must be laughing 24/7 at how foolish the weak, effete leaders of this moribund nation truly are.

It's a failed foreign policy. That's what it amounts to. Jeb won't even allow the U.S. to drill 45 miles off the Florida coast.

Now, that would depend on which side of the dividing line the rigs are set up on. The southern side is Cuban waters, and the northern side is U.S. waters.

Well, down in Key West "horizontal drilling" is an accepted practice...

The waters between Cuba and Florida are an exception. On both the east and west coast shorelines and the Gulf, the "border" extends out to 200 miles.

I'd imagine they'd go as close to the limit as possible to be provocative.

If they crew the platform with Cubans, it's just cutting the commute in half for boat people, though.

So Castro and the Chinese will drill off our coast and become wealthy in the process while we continue to be stopped by enviromentalist lunatics here in the US from accessing more oil supplies and Congress will just go right along with the brainwashing of the American public by a bunch of junk science hippies.

LOL, that was the first thing that came to my mind. A little "slant well drilling" to see if there is oil on our side of the line.

I am sure for considerations, they can find out from the oil companies who wanted to drill off Florida, but can't, where they think our oil is located offshore. - tom

That's because to do so would force them to take a stand against comrade Fidel. A "Sophie's Choice" for envirowackos.

Yep, my thoughts exactly.

That rotten old bastard Castro never misses a chance to thumb his nose at the United States.
