U.S. Firms Say Mexican 'Nothing Gringo' Boycott Could Backfire

MEXICO CITY — U.S. lobbyists lashed out Wednesday at the Mexican "Nothing Gringo" campaign timed for May 1 to coincide with the "Day Without Immigrants" boycott in the United States.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Mexico said organizers are risking a backlash and foolishly targeting some of their best allies, since U.S. corporations have actively lobbied the U.S. Congress for immigration reform including legalization for many of the estimated 11 million undocumented migrants.

CountryWatch: Mexico

Mexicans' refusal to "buy American" on May 1 could further polarize the debate and make reform supporters seem anti-American at the very moment that lobbyists are trying to persuade lawmakers in Washington to pass a bill that would benefit migrants, worries Larry Rubin, the chamber's president.

"This is like shooting oneself in the foot," Rubin said. "U.S. companies have been the first to lobby, launching a huge lobbying effort for immigration reform. ... Why hurt something that is helping you?"

Migrants and their supporters in the United States are being encouraged to skip work and school and not spend money for one day to demonstrate the migrants' importance to the U.S. economy.

South of the border, Mexicans are targeting American stores and chain restaurants — "That means no Dunkin' Donuts, no McDonald's, Burger King, Starbucks, Sears, Krispy Kreme or Wal-Mart," reads one e-mail making the rounds.

But even activists are confused about which companies are U.S.-owned. Sears is cited by boycott organizers, despite the fact that Sears' Mexico stores were bought by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim in 1997. And few organizers mention Vips — the chain of ubiquitous Mexican diners — even though they are owned by Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

A quarter of Mexico's formal private-sector jobs with regular pay are provided by U.S. firms, according to the chamber, including Walmex, the Mexican Wal-Mart....

I know how Texas can help lash back.

Make it illegal for a Mexican National to be in a Texas Mall during the Easter and Christmas holidays.  Or better yet, make em stay in Mexico over the holidays.  That'll drive em steer crazy, for sure.

Agreed.

I was buying lunch today and one of the workers was telling the guy in front of me that he wasn't going to show up May 1. The customer said, you know I might join you.

I almost busted up - as if anyone cares whether they show up. I can pack my lunch that day and save some $$.

Mexicans' refusal to "buy American" on May 1

May 1 will be the day that this American goes out and buys a new, snazzy TV. A day with reduced traffic and absence of illegal aliens' kids running and screaming in Spanish in the stores. A GREAT DAY FOR SHOPPING!

The question is, do they truly believe enough in their "cause" to boycott the emergency rooms/WIC offices/welfare offices/Social Security offices? Parasites that they are, they will not. The term "proud Mexican" is oftentimes an oxymoron.

Like girls playing house and just making believe. . .

I love reading their stuff.  Better than a funny book.

With ten days left until May 1st, more and more community leaders, student groups, heads of national organizations and elected government officials are joining the international effort that will paralyze the USA economy. The economic losses will be incalculable and this hopefully will send a strong message to the stubborn nativists, racists and bigots who by and large refuse to recognize the contributions that Mexican and other immigrants of color are making to the USA economy. These crass xenophobes will also be forced to learn the meaning of the word "respect".

These irrational and criminal reactions by racist nativists to the "awakening of the sleeping giant" will only backfire on them. These cowardly acts by White bigots such as the burning of a Mexican restaurant in San Diego on April 10 and the many other anti-Mexican hate crimes, which among these is the decapitation of three Mexican undocumented children in Baltimore, Maryland, will only stiffen the resolve of the Mexican and other Latino people to fight back. In light of these threats and hate crimes, it is imperative that every Mexicano, every Latino, every immigrant and every progressive person here and abroad join the economic boycott on May 1st.

I still say Americans should go out on May first and buy all of the lawn equipment in every store they can find.
