It's the Day of Silence, So Shut Up! (Ithaca "suburb" school bans "Great to Be Straight" shirt)
Wall St Journal-Best of the Web Today ^ | Thursday, April 27, 2006 3:51 p.m. EDT | BY JAMES TARANTO

Last week we noted that the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had upheld a California school's authority to ban T-shirts protesting the "Day of Silence," an annual pro-gay event. Now a school in Trumansburg, N.Y., is following suit. John Swanhart, a 17-year-old senior, "and some friends decided to print 'Straight is Great' and 'Adam and Eve Not Adam and Steve' on T-shirts and wear them to school in response to the National Day of Silence,":

Cosimo Tangorra, superintendent of Trumansburg schools, said he supported the decision of high school officials to send the students home.

"It seems to me kids are being discriminating," Tangorra said. "It makes people uncomfortable. It's like if someone was wearing a white supremacy T-shirt."

Tangorra said he had been contacted by high school Principal Paula Hurley earlier in the school day about problems that could potentially arise from the shirts, but by 4 p.m. had not received any phone calls from parents or students.

"Living in a free society, people can't feel threatened to live any way they want to be," Tangorra said. "School districts need to be one of the safest, if not the safest, place for students to expand their thinking."

It seems to us, though, that if such heavy-handed censorship is necessary to promote "liberal" values, there's something wrong with those values.

But I guess it's ok if the Christian students feel threatened by the pro-gay activities.

People like that ought to be threatened, you know . . . if not just killed outright. Just ask the ACLU.

"Living in a free society, people can't feel threatened to live any way they want to be."

What if the way they want to live is straight? Knowing that I could be sued at any second for saying something someone is offended by (usually for no reason), and knowing that at many colleges they have brain-washing programs to enforce the idea that "gay is okay," and knowing that elementary school students are being introduced to homosexuality without parents permission, knowing that my future children could be sexually assaulted by some gay pedophile, I think that I FEEL THREATENED!

I somewhat resent your comment . Pro Gay activists target all common sense people not just Christians.

Seems like viewpoint discrimination to me. These kids have a case they can win based upon NY state caselaw.

It's nothing like wearing a white supremacy T-shirt! That Sir, is pure propaganda and twisting of words. It has absolutely nothing to do with race.

And yes, you dolt, Homosexuals proclaiming "pride" DOES make people uncomfortable. MOST people in fact.

Discriminating used to be a good thing. Before the PC police and the wacky left hijacked it to mean denial of civil rights.

We need to take back the English language! The fact is Mr. Superintendent, people are very wise to be discriminating in their peers and who they choose as friends, who they are surrounded by. It is how one keeps themselves safe, and law abiding citizens. To suggest otherwise, is to say kids should be befriending thugs and criminals and drug users, ETC.....

People discriminate every day.........between stores, restaurants, food, clothing, every part of our lives. And we have something in this country called freedom. Freedom of association is a huge part of that!

What an idiot. He apparently doesn't know the difference between BEING discriminating, and actually discriminating against someone. Just how is wearing a t-shirt that expresses a different POLITICAL opinion discriminating against anyone? It's not, but you'll never convince the homosexual lobby of that.

Soooo, being straight is evil now? Or is it okay to be straight still, but heterosexuality is subject to a "dont ask, don't tell" policy now, while homosexuality is not?

It's illegal for Christians and Heterosexuals to advertise, but not illegal for Muslims and Homosexuals to advertise. I'm just wondering what the befuddled left is going to do with the two latter groups start blowing each other up. I guess even Sharia law will have a silver lining.

<< Living in a free society, people can't feel threatened to live any way they want to be ... >>

Unless they want to be normal and to wear shirts that acclaim so??!!

Liberalism is a psychosis!
