AUSTIN, Texas -- Math scores for fifth-grade students displaced to Texas after last year's hurricanes are lagging significantly, mirroring similar low scores in reading.
Just 45 percent of the 2,396 fifth-graders who enrolled in Texas schools after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita passed the math portion of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, according to the Texas Education Agency.
Statewide, 81 percent of Texas fifth-graders passed the April 4 math exam. Students must pass the test before they can advance to sixth grade.
Officials blame students' low scores on New Orleans' poor schools, the trauma of being abruptly uprooted from their homes, and the possibility some children were put in the wrong grade after arriving in Texas with no records.
Students can take the exam as many as three times. Students had another chance to take the test on April 19, but those results are not yet available.
On the reading portion of the exam, which was given in February, 46 percent of displaced fifth-graders passed compared to 80 percent of all students.
The reading test was also given to third-graders; only 58 percent of evacuees passed compared with 89 percent of all students.
Under state law, children who fail the test must be given intensive remediation.

How stupid do you have to be not to know what grade you are taking?
What a damning account of New Orleans schools. I suspect if the evacuees are able to acclimate to Texas, they will fare better in life. That's assuming that they do want to work hard and do well in their new place.
I'm not sure if it condemns New Orleans schools, or the New Orleans lifestyle (or a bit of each). The "Big Easy" might be descriptive of grade promotion as well as the laid back lifestyle that is New Orleans.

The illiterate masses from New Orleans do not trash entire cities and create intense criminal situations.

What did they expect? beyond the fact NO is hardly a model school system the kids who are still in texas are not their best students..

Actually its pretty interesting. I suspect that other States have this but LOuisiana has a ton of Black political organizations that puts people on their sample ballots they pass out to the voters or give to the voters right before they vote. Its extremely important to get on the right ballot. Anyway, what is important on the ballots is the numbers by each persons name. In fact I have seen sample ballots with just numbers. So people who can't read vote by the numbers
It is common for the evacuees in high schools to start disturbances that require police to be called.
The evacuees want to rob and steal in their new place. They have worn their welcome out.
Job fairs have been held for them; no takers!
People in Houston are fed up with them--long ago.
Louisiana public schools are horrible. If you live in a great school district, you might be able to send your kid all the way until third grade.
Then you have to pony up for private school. That's the way it is.
As Dobbs said today all schools are failing because of the illegals kids who are dropping out, I say kick them out.
But Texas got a double whammy with the illegals kids and the Katrina kids.
The only ones suffering are OUR Children.
