Viva Mexico. Now let's break out the needles
The Houston Chronicle ^ | April 29, 2006 | Tracey Eaton

Posted on 04/29/2006 1:08:25 PM PDT by MadIvan

I find it incredible that the Mexican Congress passed legislation that would make it legal to possess, carry and use small amounts of heroin, cocaine, marijuana and other drugs. Mexican Vicente Fox must sign off on it for the proposal to become law, and some think he will.

Now I know that a proposal that may or may not be approved does not have a lot to do with immigration. But talk about sending the wrong signals.

Mexico desperately wants a guest-worker program. It wants the U.S. to ease immigration laws to make it easier for its citizens to escape poverty, government corruption, a wrecked legal system, human rights abuses, drug violence and other ills.

Mexico wants to show the U.S. it is a worthy partner in helping to ease drug-related violence on the border. So over the past year, it has sent hundreds of police reinforcements to the border. That hasn't showed many signs of helping -- drug killings continue to be rampant. But, hey, Mexico did at least make a show of trying to help.

Now this. Let's just legalize drugs. Talk about stoking the flames. You've got protesters waving Mexican flags on American streets. You've got people singing the "Star-Spangled Banner" in Spanish. Now let's just throw another fat marijuana brick on the fire and legalize heroin.

Open a fresh pack of needles -- ah, heck, just use the old ones -- and let's get the party started.

This is gonna go over real well.

The old saying, "good fences make good neighbours" springs to mind. In this case, a high, electrified fence with a pirhana filled moat would make good neighbours, I dare say.

Careful. You'll offend the dopers.

Could this become our Amsterdam? Meaning - maybe people who want to party will go there instead of risk criminal charges here?

Now we will pay for detox and increased crime from the junkies coming north to feed their habits. More crack anchor babies at over $1 million each too.

Some of this is probably a gesture by Mexican leftists to encourage the narco-leftists in the rest of Latin America. The newly-elected leftist nutcase in Bolivia thinks it is going to build its national economy on the coca leaf, for example. Leave that natural gas in the ground and sell cocaine. And FARC has always made its living through drug sales.

Heck, Mexico is just helping out the brothers.

Counting on Mexican police forces traditionally isn't a good idea.

Yes, let the dopers seek out the "safety" of Mexico. That should be interesting.

All's I meant was, perhaps they'd go there, like the people of England go to A'Dam instead of risking jail at home. Whether or not it would be wise to do so is their problem.

Not to mention the fence-haters. And the illegal supporters. (Of which there are a surprising number on Free Republic--one going so far as to say they are "law-abiding illegal aliens", which boggles the mind...)

Indeed. Hopefully a big one.

Will the illegal aliens want this type of drug laws in the USA?

And yet a fence would just be wayy too expensive. Gotta love OBL logic.

In a related even, the Libertarian Party has issued a press release announcing that their "Free State" initiative had been shifted from New Hampshire to Sonora...

Actually I think the law had more to do with uniformity than anything else. An article I had read stated that there is no law or equivalent Federal min to sentence offenders caught with small quantities of dope. In fact, depending on where you got busted in Mexico you may or may not even be charged.
