HELP! About an hour ago I was crossing over Sunrise on the pedestrian overpass from the Ft. Lauderdale Swap Shop. I always glance at the canal on the south side of Sunrise because it is fun to watch the fish jumping sometimes. Anyway, this time I saw something that made me stop dead in my tracks. It was something HUGE in the canal. I couldn't tell at first what it was. It could have been a seal, or a gigantic turtle, or a really large alligator. Anyway, it was making a lot of movement in the canal and I yelled for the other people on the overpass to take a look.
Then a funny thing happened. NO ONE looked at the canal. Instead they glanced at me like I was a maniac. Okay, I admit I was really excited but I was also frustrated because after a couple of minutes of yelling, still NO ONE even looked at the canal where the animal was.
Finally, in desperation, I screamed "ManBearPig! ManBearPig! ManBearPig!" which caused one group of people to stop short, chuckle, and more importantly, LOOK at the canal where they (two guys and a woman) saw the "ManBearPig." As a crowd gathered we began speculating what that creature was. One of that group thought at first it was an alligator but then we saw the HUGE TAIL FIN of the critter stretch out of the water. It had the distinct look of a Manatee. And not only that, there were THREE of them.
One of the people in the first group, Joshua, tried calling Animal Control but that didn't work. Then Josh got thru to the Miami Seaquarium where he left a message. The Seaquarium adopts trapped Manatees like the ones in this canal.
Now here is the PROBLEM. That canal is blocked. I believe those Manatees are TRAPPED in there and it since it also has dirty water, they might not live much longer. Added to the fact that they were moving quite a bit which might be a bad sign.
Does ANYBODY out there know who to contact RIGHT AWAY to rescure those Manatees? They are in the canal just south of the Swap Shop and just to the west of the pedestrian overpass. They are in the corner where the East-West canal curves south. There are only a couple of hours more of daylight so this would be the best time for them to be rescued.
IF these three Manatees are rescued, I, as the "maniac" who spotted them do assert my naming rights. Therefore they should be named ManBearPig, Algore, and South Park.
HELP!!!
What's the matter PJ, don't you have any friends? ;~)
You seem to know this sort of stuff. Who can be contacted for an EMERGENCY rescue of Manatees?
Manbearpig??? You can't be cereal?
Have you tried the local SPCA?
I sort of bonded with those Manatees. Anyway, they are an endangered species and right now THREE of them are trapped in that filthy canal. They are normally pretty lethargic but all three of them were moving around a lot which might not be a good thing. I just hope they can be RESCUED!
A cereal situation indeed.
I can't help, but am curious - is there about a 15 story hotel or condo at the SW quadrant of the crossing of Sunrise at the intracoastal? Between the intracoastal and the Galleria, I believe?
I did the MEP engineering for a suites hotel there about 20 years ago, just curious what it is these days.
Good luck with the manatees.
Josh called animal control. Dead end. Then he called the Seaquarium but had to leave a message. So who should I contact?
You shouldn't distrub them since they are no doubt working on the next season of Family Guy.
Are the edible?
No. Much further west. West of I-95. This is just west of the Pedestrian overpass next to the Swap Shop. The Manatees can now be easily spotted from there.
For God's Sakes, man! Call EnviroMan! Hurry!
I found this via a Jeeves search: If you spot an injured, dead, tagged, or orphaned manatee, or if you see a manatee who is being harassed, please call 1-888-404-FWCC (3922), #FWC or *FWC on your cellular phone, or use VHF Channel 16 on your marine radio.
Hope this helps!
Call Florida Marine Patrol or US Fish & Wildlife
Or your local PETA chapter
Tell them and see if they have other numbers to call?
You are sure that it was not Janet Reno and Helen Thomas swimming?
You are sure that it was not Janet Reno and Helen Thomas swimming?
You could always call PETA and say you're fixing to eat some tasty manatee if someone doesn't rescue them stat.
