May 1 closures: who to boycott? Rallies (Live thread)
05/01/06

Posted on 04/30/2006 9:38:02 PM PDT by Heartofsong83

This should be a list of who is planning to close their business on Monday, May 1 in response of the Great American Boycott. We should compile it and boycott them ourselves if possible!

Remember to go shopping or work overtime on May 1!

No doubt - and probably part of some union as well.

Have to love Upromise!

Will be booking my vacay tonight also :)

My son's 529 is growing very nicely. I would recommend Upromise to anyone ever even thinking of having children in college or going back themselves.

"boycott Tyson Foods, until they go broke".

I will never buy a Tyson product after this.

Any company, restaurant or other business that is closed today should be boycotted in the future because they are supporting and hiring illegals. Real simple. If you hire illegals, you will NOT get my business.

You really know how to hurt a gal, don't you? I'm sitting here, thousands of miles from Old Ebbett, eating a stale donut for breakfast, and you post a thing like that!!! I should hit the "abuse" button. If you go on to say you had one of their Bloody Marys, I will hit "abuse".

Thanks for a good giggle Lady. No, we didn't have Bloody Marys but we did have the fresh orange juice.

REMEMBER WHO THE SPONSORS ARE OF THESE RIOTS. A*N*W*E*R, a socialist and communist outfit. ALSO, today is May 1st. The traditional May Day RED Day in Red China and Soviet Russia. Today is the communist high day on the calendar. So, makes you wonder why they chose this day of all days to do their march? These stupid people do not know they are simply being used. This bunch could give a rats hip pockets about these illegals. It is all about defeating America.

Why be angry about a Day Without Immigrants?

My commute this morning was very pleasant... I didn't get stuck behind a pickup truck (filled with 15 Mexicans in the cab and one in the back) driving slow in the left lane. I was able to order breakfast in English.

What's the problem??

It's a great program. I wish I had the citibank upromise card though, that would really up my savings. You can even pay off your student loans with it, so it's great for anyone with kids (not just for college) or with student debt. But I'm not telling you anything you don't know!

Between buyblue.org and upromise, shopping has become very easy. Today was the first time I ever bought groceries on-line, we'll see how that goes.

EAT AT TACO BELL

Immigrants are boycotting them for wages, non union pay, etc. So go to Taco bell. It is American owned and operated.

Just got back from the local Wal-Mart (Cleveland, Ohio suburbs). Pretty normal, maybe a little lighter shopping traffic but not too much different from any other day. Will be visiting Lowes this afternoon!

Here are some of the culprits:

Some big businesses were shutting down operations: Six of 14 Perdue Farms plants will close; Gallo Wines in Sonoma, Calif., was giving its 150 employees the day off; Tyson Foods Inc., the world's largest meat producer, planned to shut five of its nine beef plants and four of six pork plants.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT THE TACO BELL BOYCOTT VICTORY:

US Congressional Hispanic Caucus: "This is a truly historic agreement, marking perhaps the single greatest advance for farm workers since the early struggles of the United Farm Workers. To the the workers and organizers of CIW, we express our deepest gratitude for their determined work for their own dignity and their historic contribution to advancing the cause of labor rights.”

Former US President/Nobel Laureate Jimmy Carter: “I commend the Coalition of Immokalee Workers for their principled leadership in this very important campaign. I am pleased Taco Bell has taken a leadership role to help reform working conditions for Florida farmworkers and has committed to use its power to effect positive human rights change. I now call on others in the industry to follow Taco Bell’s lead to help the tomato farmworkers.”

Tom Morello, former guitarist for Rage Against the Machine: "Today the Immokalee farmworkers struck a blow for dignity and human rights in the workplace and received the long overdue raise they have been fighting for. This is a major victory for the workers and demonstrates that by standing up and standing together, we can overturn any injustice. By standing up and standing together, we can change the world."

Congressman John Lewis (D-GA): "This is a great victory for the champions of social justice and equality in America and around the world. The courageous men and women of the Coalition of the Immokalee Workers prove that standing strong in the struggle can remove the greatest obstacles, even the resistance of a goliath in corporate industry. This victory once again confirms that the methods of nonviolence can win deep and lasting change in the most powerful institutions of the world, in American government and in corporate conglomerates. I applaud all the Coalition workers who struggled and suffered for years to win greater equality for American workers."

Eric Schlosser, author "Fast Food Nation," in New York Times Op/Ed: "At a time of declining union membership, failed organizing drives and public apathy about poverty, a group of immigrant tomato pickers had persuaded an enormous fast food company - Yum Brands, which in addition to Taco Bell owns KFC, Pizza Hut, A&W All American Food Restaurants and Long John Silver's - to increase the wages of migrant workers and impose a tough code of conduct on Florida tomato suppliers... Taco Bell deserves credit for acknowledging its responsibility on this issue. Now McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's and Yum's other brands need to do the same."

Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA): "Yum Brands acceptance of your demands is a great achievement and hopefully only a first step in a widespread awakening to the impacts of corporate policies... It is only through the strength and courage of those few who are willing to stand against insurmountable odds and incalculable risk that true change can be wrought. Your work to end modern day slavery reminds us all that there is still much to be done to end inustice both at home and abroad!"

Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH): "So today we celebrate a tremendous victory of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and the many farm workers who organized a very effective boycott of Taco Bell to draw attention to their plight... Burger King, McDonald's and Wendy's - I hope you're watching, because you are next!"

That sounds yummy! Here's my charro bean recipe that is better than any restaurant. The best part is, if you take a few scoops and pop it into a sautee pan, you can mash up some fantastic refried beans without any yucky lard.

Charro Beans:
1 large can of Swanson's Chicken Broth (this is the super size can)
3 cans (16 oz) of your favorite pinto beans
1 can rotel
5 strips of bacon
2 Tbs cumin
3 Tbs chili powder
1 cup chopped cilantro

Chop the bacon into small pieces and sautee until browned. Blot up excess grease. Sautee can of rotel in bacon bits for 3 minutes. Add cumin and spices--and stir well. Add beans and give it a good stir. Add broth and simmer for 30-40 minutes. Add cilantro in last 10 minutes of cooking. The longer you let it simmer, the better it will taste.
