Keenan pollster: Conrad Burns (R-MT) in deep trouble
The Missoulian ^ | May 2, 2006 | Charles S. Johnson

Posted on 05/02/2006 4:26:00 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

The telephone poll of 600 Montana voters taken April 25-27 showed Democrat John Morrison topping Burns, 50 percent to 40 percent, with 11 percent undecided. (Numbers may not add up to 100 percent because of rounding.) It found Democrat Jon Tester slightly ahead of Burns, 48 percent to 42 percent.

The full poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

It says much that Bob Keenan, a state Senator little-known outside his legislatvie district and the state capitol of Helena, polls stronger than the far better-known Conrad Burns.

What is wrong with Burns?

Incumbent, Republican in a bright red state.

He's been implicated in the Jack Abramoff scandal and runors that he may be indicted are rampant. Also, it was revealed that a medical research company, whose lobbyist was once Burns top aide, hired the Senator's daughter immediately after Burns announced a Federal grant for it.

More recently, Burns may use campaign funds to pay his legal bills.

Looks bad to be him. Maybe he can step aside and a better GOP candidate can try to keep his seat GOP.

What it says is that Senator Burns is an almost sure loser if he doesn't get absolved of these allegations, but that was already the case anyhow. As I've said before, a lot of people around here have been ignoring or understating how tough it is for politicians to win when they are facing serious legal charges of corruption.

Many well-entrenched politicians have gone down on far less. The ones that survive are almost always when the scandal is so late-breaking that they don't have but token opposition. Burns has much more than token opposition. All kinds of 'counter-partisan' things happen once perceived corruption features in the equation.

Burns is not an idiot. Max Baucus, Montana's senior senator, is an imbecile. Max's IQ is too low to have him classified as a moron. Max's wife beat up an innocent woman at a Home Depot like store in DC and was arrested. The first wolf killed in this state (Federally protected after re-introduction) was killed on Max's ranch. The press does not give a d*mn about his (Max's) follies. The Montana papers just repeatedly (for YEARS and YEARS) write that Burns is bad. Burns did this. Burns did that. Burns is GOOD for the state of Montana. He just has to fight all news organizations in the state as well as TIME magazine. No Republican has a better shot than Burns.

Why couldn't Bush appoint this guy Secretary of Agriculture instead of the guy he did (forget his name now) who could have taken out Nelson in Nebrasksa? Who was the genius that lost us the only guy who could take out Nelson and was itching to do it?

I've wondered about that, myself. Maybe Karl Rove made a secret deal with Ben Nelson regarding judicial nominations.

Burns is too stupid to realize he's not representing the best interests of Montana, out-of-touch, and he's a liability once he's indicted in the Abramoff scandal which is not a matter of if but when.

Bush appointed Nebraska Republican governor Mike Johanns Secretary of Agriculture. Believe me, it was the best thing Bush, or any President, ever did for the State of Nebraska. Johanns was the worst governor in my lifetime, and we were glad to see him leave. He was pro illegal immigration, wouldn't enforce the law. And no, Johanns didn't have the stones to take out Nelson in November.

While I'm at it, as a native Nebraskan, I would like to apologize, once again, to the entire civilized world for Chuck Hagel.

Bright red state? I don't see it that way anymore. There is a Democrat governor now and all the land is being bought up by rich liberals from California. They want Montana to become a park for the rich and famous. Even where I live, in the middle of the state, things are changing fast. Western Montana has already been bought up, Central Montana is going fast. No one seems to want Eastern MT yet.

If Burns had been appointed Ag Sec, the ultraliberal 'Rat Governor would've appointed a like-minded moonbat.

C'mon, now, you forget Bob Kerrey was Governor in the '80s.

It is likely that this poll is CRAP. The Missoulian is not based in reality. Nor is the city of Missoula for that matter. Missoula and the Missoulian still long for a senator or a representative who can be as liberal as Pat Williams (past MT state rep to US Congress) was.

Let's not get too crazy about this.
