NEW YORK - The nation's largest beverage distributors have agreed to halt nearly all soda sales to public schools, according to a deal announced Wednesday by the William J. Clinton Foundation.
Under the agreement, the companies have agreed to sell only water, unsweetened juice and low-fat milks to elementary and middle schools, said Jay Carson, a spokesman for former President Bill Clinton. Diet sodas would be sold only to high schools.
Cadbury Schweppes PLC, Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo Inc. and the American Beverage Association have all signed onto the deal, Carson said, adding that the companies serve "the vast majority of schools." The American Beverage Association represents the majority of school vending bottlers.
The deal follows a wave of regulation by school districts and state legislatures to cut back on student consumption of soda amid reports of rising childhood obesity rates. Soda has been a particular target of those fighting obesity because of its caloric content and popularity among children.

attacking "big soda" now, eeeehhhhh...........
Announced by the William J. Clinton Association.
Old Bubba that POS telling America's kids what is good for them. The son of a beach just wont go away. He is like stepping in dog crap, no matter how well you wipe your feet the stench wont go away.
How does low fat milk fit into all that.
Kids need animal fat in their diet.
Milk has been tried and true for centuries.
Anything associated with Clinton has a taint about it, so parents, had your kids a 6pak of Jolt or Barqs or Pepsi and send 'em off to class.
Exactly. As if kids had no alternative but to buy from the school. So now they either bring their own, or wander off during lunch to buy some.
I was thinking that instead of drug pushers in the schoolyard we'll now have people standing outside the fence trying to lure kids into buying a can of Pepsi.
GOOD GRIEF!
Soda= baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!
Condoms= get in line kiddies...there's enough for EVERYONE to enjoy before mom and dad get home from work!
NO WAR FOR SODA!
Does anyone really think this is going to have an impact on teenage obesity?
"William J. Clinton Foundation"...
Why is that lying, disgraced, rapist skunk involved?
I agree with the ban. Just look around America. Your kids are fat! When I went to school, we had one or two chubby kids in the whole school. Now the facts are that almost 1 out of 2 kids are chubby or outright fat! And if you are the owner of one of these fat kids, you should be ashamed as a parent. You aren't parenting. You are taking them to McDonalds and buying them soda instead of a family meal with a vegetables and no soda.
You are causing your kids torment in schools and a hosts of physical and psychological problems. In fact, as an Army recruiter, we are starting to face a National Security nightmare of a shrinking pool of recruits because of our stringent body fat standards.
And as far as you crying about "Big Brother" etc. If you read into this, it was a private deal with the soda companies.
Now the "soda-leggers" will start a black market in Cokes/Pepsis in the hallways, selling warm cans from their lockers for $2 a can or cold ones from the coolers in car trunks in the parking lots for $5 a can.
At 2 bucks a can, no less. Oh, you want that cold? Two-fiddy.
Soda isn't the problem
Lack of exercise is the problem
But it takes a lot more exercise to burn off a can of high fructose corn syrup than it does a diet drink :)
Soda machines were in schools 25+ years ago when I was in school
The problem isn't soda ... the problem is that kids are not out playing and getting exercise like in my day
Ummm, respectfully, a can of regular soda is a can of crap. It is a can full of HFCS and empty calories.
First they took the smokers, but I didn't say anything because I don't smoke. Then they took the Coke machines. . . . .
Then how about the serving sizes of soda these days. Back when I was in school it was sold in 12 oz. cans. Now soda's sold in huge, two-serving size bottles. Yet more calories to work off when kids are spending less time moving.
