WASHINGTON (AFP) - First Lady Laura Bush broke with husband President George W. Bush, saying she found nothing wrong with a new Spanish-language version of the US national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner."

"I don't think there's anything wrong with singing it in Spanish," Bush told CNN television in an interview.

When you can tell me the press reports things as it happens, without a spin - you can argue with my logic.

There's nothing wrong with taking it seriously -but you don't have to attack people for not agreeing with you. Chill out it's a forum. I find it hard to fault Mrs. Bush for not caring if people sing something in Spanish - sing it in Swahili for all I care if the words are the same.

I have never been able to figure out what in Laura Bush's childhood gave her those mexican traditions and her affinity to mexico. Did she have a mexican nanny? I don't know.

However, it seems to me that Laura is almost more pro-mexican than George.

I wonder if the girl that Laura killed when she was driving was a Mexican. That would make so much sense as to why both of them are so pro mexican culture. Obviously, guilt is something that does not go away.

This perversion of our national anthem is going over like a lead balloon...other than the usual suspects, looks like nobody's buying...

"If you think this is "plain silly" then you haven't been paying attention to the millions of illegals marching in the streets the last few weeks. The balkanization of the US is a very serious issue."

I've seen the marches and they are more of a demand for rights from people who have none. Is going after the First Lady from a quote from CNN (no less) going to change that? Get real.

People can sing the anthem in Spanish all day long but it's not going to change anything. Make it so they can't become citizens without learning English. That's what is what is important to me.

I remember being able to understand every word that was said because we all spoke English.

But not their parents and not at home. Two houses down they spoke Polish at home. Three houses down French. Four houses down Italian. Next door German. Their children learned English, and that is the problem now in the bilingual schools, that they teach in Spanish and English, which is hurting all the children. What they speak at home is their own business, but the schools must teach in English.

Please point out where you were "attacked". I replied to your post pointing out the flaw in your logic - it is not clear how that could be considered "attacking you".

I might suggest that you consider that you may be projecting here.

I'm reading all of your posts. You're hell bent that Laura Bush is part of a sinister plot - the article didn't say anything about the new version of the song. It said a translated song - we're obviously not going to agree on it at this point, so don't try to turn it around that I'm the one projecting. This will be my last response to you - so rave on all you want.

Her comments are not very helpful in the current political environment. She was either (1) ignorant of the marches and the attempt to hijack the National Anthem, (2)she is aware of them and feels that they are fine or (3) politically tone deaf and should stop giving interviews on hotbutton issues.

Why not poll the French on how they would like to hear a German version of the French National Anthem (including some yrics).

If memory serves La Marsailles (sp?) first words (in English) are:

Ye sons of france awake to glory.

In German it would be:

Ye Söhne von Frankreich wachen zum Ruhm auf

Just because someone married a very successful politician does not mean she is a political junky like say the people who post here.

Then one would wonder what she's doing giving interviews and talking extensively on a subject that's been in the news. She doesn't have to be a political junky in order to know her husband's stated positions on the more prominent issues. I only knew about GWB's statement from watching the TV news. I didn't hear about it on FR or some blog, so it's not like it's some obscure information.

while you aren't an immigrant, there are lots of legal immigrants who are naturalized and in some ways more loyal Americans than American natives.

Truthfully, I myself feel the National Anthem should be in English.

I just tried to give Mrs. Bush's entire answer (rough version) in my earlier post. It seemed like many folks posting had not heard her complete response.

"I don't think there's anything wrong with singing it in Spanish," Bush told CNN television in an interview."

Evidently President Bush put his foot in his mouth the other day when he said the National Anthem should be sung in English. I think it was on Drudge where it was reported that the then Campaigning George Bush in 2000 sang the National Anthem in Spanish.

"I wonder if the girl that Laura killed when she was driving was a Mexican."

I think you need to do some research and get your facts correct.

It was not a girl that Laura Bush hit and killed, it just so happened to be her boyfriend at the time who intered the intersection the same time as Laura who missed the stop sign. It was a very devastating time for her.
