Correct me if I am wrong, but as a schoolteacher, did not First Lady Laura Bush teach her classes speaking American English? Further, in the aftermath of the Illegal Alien Rights Demonstration, and on the verge of yet another Cinco De Mayo Celebration, should not the former First Lady of Texas be reminded to simply REMEMBER THE ALAMO?!!

You'd have to have a pretty low opinion of her intelligence to think she was set up.

Actually NO. I saw Barbara Bush set up when she was asked about whether or not Hillary Clinton was fair game in the 1992 election, with no mention made that Hillary had already said the Clintons were a two for one deal. Laura Bush equally was set up here when she was not told the new translation was not a translation at all but a different song using the music of the US national anthem.

By the way, you don't think her husband, who's fluent in Spanish, might have informed her of the meaning of the words they used?

Never been married have you? Just because someone married a very successful politician does not mean she is a political junky like say the people who post here. The Bush family talks are unlikely to be about which old media landmine might be out there today. They know if the old media had not set her up on this, it would have been another issue. They understand that you can not win with the old media. You on the other hand seem to still be a puppet of ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, NYT etc and once again they are pulling your strings.

---Once again the MSM will manage to make a mountain out of a molehill. Sadder still is the fact that so many people will actually rise to the bait.---

Once again, though, we have a mixed message as opposed to clear leadership.

I think the Drive-by media is just spinning it. All she's saying is that they can sing it in whatever language they want but be respectful to the citizens of the United States. In other words, sing it in English.

"The point is, it's the United States national anthem, and what people want is it to be sung in a way that respects the United States and our culture," she said.

Methinks that the First Lady has surely not heard the new lyrics and is talking language only. Whatever. I certainly disagree with her.

10 posts before reason...

So now Laura Bush is commenting on things that she knows nothing about?

Then why is she commenting on something that she knows nothing about? It reminds of when she said agreed with reporters that opposition against Harriet Miers was "probably" sexist.

Should she really be giving interviews is she is not familiar with what the President has already discussed?

One of the requirements to become an American citizen is to be able to speak English.

Therefore no need to have the National Anthem in any other language.

I'm sure it wouldn't bother anyone if Palestinians sung the Israeli anthem.

My goodness such snipiness so early in the morning.

Look, I personally don't think there's anything wrong with singing the song in Spanish - big deal! - it's when you change the words that it's a problem. The same people that villify the press are the first ones to believe it the first minute they can bash one of the Bush's.

*can't help but think of how some of the older crowd gets offended at youth groups singing amazing grace to the tune of gilligan's island or the house of the rising sun*

I suspect she was taken out of context. If they sing it in Spanish temporarily to learn it fine....

...but it should be done with the idea in mind that the English version is the official version and needs to be learned.

When will people learn that the media distorts everything these people say?

"They sound more like the Clintons everyday. If one won't the other will, just another way to cover all bases."

Or a bit like John Kerry x 2.

"I was for the Spanish version of the national anthem before George was against it"

So by your logic, we should never believe the press when it reports anything we don't want to hear.

This is a very hotbutton issue right now and singing the national anthem in spanish is a very big deal due to the protests in the streets. We're not talking about some Sunday School group doing a humorous takeoff on a song - we're talking about the Balkanization of America. Forgive us if we take this issue seriously.

Wow and I thought that Bagdad Bob was quite the apologist. It is not clear how the following quote can be "taken out of context".

I don't think there's anything wrong with singing it in Spanish," Bush told CNN television in an interview.

Read the article - it is very damning. Laura Bush sounds more and more like Hillary Clinton every day.

When I first heard the anthem would be sung in Spanish I thought it would be a translation. Often this is done with other anthems into English, so we know what the lyrics are. I would never sing the Deutschland anthem in English, but would like to know what it is. Then, I heard what had been done. They slaughtered and watered down the anthem. That's where it's unacceptable.

When the First lady says we need to change the official US language from English to Spanish I will be worried about her...so far she has not done that so I'm not going to get my nose bent out of shape.

This is just plan silly.

If you think this is "plain silly" then you haven't been paying attention to the millions of illegals marching in the streets the last few weeks. The balkanization of the US is a very serious issue.
