"I don't think there's anything wrong with singing it in Spanish," Bush told CNN television in an interview.

She's wrong in thinking that. But she's far smarter than President Bush in that she didn't step right into it like the President did when he said he was against it while he actually had sung the National Anthem, in spanish, at his own campaign events.

Just so it's clear Jimi Hendrix did not change The Stars Spangled Banner . Also there were no lyrics sung. It was a tribute from
him.

"My husband and I pretty much agree totally on everything, always have. We celebrate our 25th anniversary this month."

My husband always agrees with everything I say. We will be married 33 yrs. in August. ;)

I think he really does not like the anthem in Spanish.

His biographer notes it was often sung in Spanish and that he joined in the singing during the 2000 campaign. They also had some Hispanic pop singer and a bunch of kids sing it in Spanish at the first inaugural.

Wikipedia says: "The Star-Spangled Banner was translated into Spanish in 1919 by the US Bureau of Education[4]. It has also been translated into a number of other languages. In 1861, it was translated into German [5] (and is also on that page in Latin). It has been translated into Yiddish by Jewish immigrants[6]and into French by Acadians of Louisiana [7]"

link: the State Department's copy of the 1919 Spanish version

The 2006 version is different and expresses entirely different sentiments from the 1919. I still haven't found out if the inaugural or the Bush campaign events used the 1919 version or this newer one. I think the new one just became popular this year so I think Bush used the 1919 which is, of course, officially approved as a Spanish translation.

Well, it's probably more fuss over "To Anacreon In Heaven" than it's really worth. Mostly symbolic of larger issues, I guess. Still, if people care so much about the anthem, why don't they ever sing (or even know of) the last three verses? Yes, the anthem has four verses, not one.

Exactly. The title was changed. Lyrics were changed.

It was not a translation. It was a rewrite.

I suggested the same for France which also had territorial wars with Germany.

I saw her say that as my hand went to grab the remote! My blood pressure cannot deal with this kind of stuff coming from the WH.
She backed off a little bit when the "journalist" mentioned that her husband thought it should be sung in English...

Wow, thanks for the info. I think I'd heard that it had been sung in Spanish during the 2000 campaign.

I also didn't know it had 4 verses, shame on me! Gonna google it now and read it.

Laura is to blame for the Harriet Myers fiasco

I thought the same thing the minute she was nominated. I like Laura, but I think she is a bit liberal in some of her ideas.

The point is, it's the United States national anthem, and what people want is it to be sung in a way that respects the United States and our culture," she said.

"We are a nation of immigrants," the first lady continued. "We are a nation of many, many languages, because immigrants come and bring their languages."

She added: "I recognize that we're a nation of immigrants and that we're a welcoming nation. And that's why we're diverse. That's why we're so strong. That's why our culture is as rich as it is."

OMG!

Earth to Laura: You'd like us to be a country of rich cultural diversity, like, uh, India maybe? Let's celebrate Mex flags flying alongside the Stars and Stripes -- cultural diversity can pull apart our country as it has done in Canada.

Laura...this is so sad for me, someone who has adored your grace and dignity.

But I am very angry at this stupidity and we are FINISHED. Anyone with zero instinct to protect the unique culture of the USA, as every other nation seeks to protect their culture....this is someone who is may read a lot but has no clue whatsoever. No one gives a rats butt what YOU think except as you have been a classy figure supporting your husband. Now that's down the toilet too.

You were one of the things that kept me clinging to your lame husband's administration.

I can't wait for you people to back yourselves back to your stupid ranch.

WELL Caca de Toro LAURA!

I like First Lady Laura Bush, however, she can't play good guy, bad guy on these issues.

She's insulting federal statutes, and our, the American people's intelligence. Laura Bush has purposely omitted the word ILLEGAL from her blather. What makes her think we don't understand the difference between legal and illegal.

Puhleeeze Laura, there's a right way to come to America, and wrong way. You and George W. Bush can't gloss, or varnish over the way 20/30 million illegal aliens broke into our house, America, to get here. Your excuse is simply not acceptable. And the American National Anthem, is exactly that...AMERICAN.

Just read the actual translation. Nothing Wrong With It At All.

Except it's NOT a "translation."

translation n 1: a written communication in a second language having the same meaning as the written communication in a first language
