Republican Right Abandoning Bush

WASHINGTON - Angry conservatives are driving the approval ratings of President Bush and the GOP-led Congress to dismal new lows, according to an AP-Ipsos poll that underscores why Republicans fear an Election Day massacre.

Six months out, the intensity of opposition to Bush and Congress has risen sharply, along with the percentage of Americans who believe the nation is on the wrong track.

The AP-Ipsos poll also suggests that Democratic voters are far more motivated than Republicans. Elections in the middle of a president’s term traditionally favor the party whose core supporters are the most energized.

Take your fearmongering elsewhere. It doesn't work here.

"Do you really think we can afford the huge increases in education spending or the ridiculous medicare drug program?"

Yes, considering it is actually making a difference in educating our youth.

Sure it is.

"The system is working. That's what's important for people to understand," Bush said.

But the president did not mention some of the test's less flattering results. The fourth-grade reading performance was essentially flat, and in eighth grade, reading scores dropped.

Spending more has always done wonders for test scores.

""Fearmongering won't get you as many votes this time around.""

Fearmongering implies that there is really nothing to fear, that the danger is being greatly overblown...we'll see if you still think i am fearmongering when the Kossaks are running the country.

As I said, flame me if you wish, but this is one guy who has had enough.

I don't flame fellow FReepers. Anyway, my feeling is this, you vote for the most conservative person in the primary and then the Republican in the general. Even if he/she is RINOish, it's an R and that means it counts toward the total R's and keeps the Republican majority. I'm not happy with Bush and I'm not happy with the Senate but I would be a lot less happy with a Gore, Kerry, Clinton at the helm. I would be a lot less happy if Kerry had picked the last two Supreme Court Justices with the approval of a Dem Senate. President Bush and some Republicans are not ideal, and it's certainly not pretty and painless, but that's the way politics work. I won't sit out an election and I won't vote for a Dem or 3rd Party.

Why didnt a good conservative run in 2000???

One did. His name was Alan Keyes. He had the issues nailed 99% from a conservative perspective.

But we were told from the beginning "He can't win" by the folks who run the GOP. Unfortunately, most believed them.

Just don't be surprised when those kinds of arguments lose saliency and potency as time goes by...

""One did. His name was Alan Keyes""

What a joke....he might want to try winning an election in his home state before running for President.....

Great graph. Its sort of funny when people want even more money to schooling.. We spend 50% more then Canada does now per student. And Canada has a top heavy education system.

I think we have to face the facts that government won't solve the education issues. Nor does every second waitress need a degree in sociology like today.

I think your strategy is the most effective one. In the longrun I expect we will head towards the government regulating so much and so bureaucratic that the system will eventually come down like the Soviet system did for the same reasons.

But the Republicans do delay that end run.. they can't stop it because if they don't make things more socialist and more nanny statist the people vote them out. So they do things like the perscription drug plan.. just a lot smaller then the Democrat plan.

Ultimatley I think people have to look beyond voting as the way to make society the way they want it to be. And I'm not saying going for dictatorship, but that voluntary action is more powerful.. I think what happens when people view voting as the only way to deal with any issue, they empower the politicians.. they make the politicians the only source of power in the nation.

You crave power. We want to advance our principles. We can and will survive without the GOP being in power.

The issue with this is that in order to really advance principles past the theoretical level, a movement needs to have power.

Can the Conservative movement "survive" without the GOP being in power? Sure ... but can it succeed?

Allow me to give you two things to make my point in this regard more clear: "Chief Justice Roberts" and "Associate Justice Alito".

Do Conservatives really think that they can succeed without Conservatives in the Judiciary and on the Supreme Court?

Do Conservatives really think that, should the GOP lose the House (and possibly the Senate) this cycle and Associate Justice Stevens and/or Ginsburg retires/dies before 2008 that President Bush will able to successfully put justices like Roberts and Alito on the court.

Here's my own personal experience with my fellow Conservatives who place everything on "principle" without understanding how "power" factors into success. In 1992 I watched in horror as other "principled" Conservatives abandoned a decent, if moderate, Republican President for Pat Buchanan ... setting up a situation (serious primary challenge) that past elections indicated would be a fatal blow.

President Bush had a 50/50 track record on SCOTUS appointments (Liberal Souter, and solidly Conservative Thomas) ... which I'd point out was a better ratio than Reagan (2/1 with "Moderate" Kennedy and O'Connor, and solidly Conservative Scalia). We can make all sorts of speculative assumptions as to what Justices a Bush41 2nd term would have produced ... but I think it's safe to conclude that the results wouldn't have been Justice Ginsburg and Justice Breyer ...

As a Conservative, I'm actually ok with a "moderate" Republican as President ... so long as the Judicial appointments are Conservative (and from the looks of this Bush43 has a better record than both his Dad AND Reagan). Because when it comes right down to it, for the last 40 years the Judiciary is the real venue that ensures whether a social movement succeeds ... or fails.

You are still with the gop but lots of goprs aren't even going to go to the polls any more. They won't vote dem or republican. That's when the country's really going down the tubes - when both parties drive away the voters. It's happening already.

You're a sorry POS.

I believe you were speaking earlier about how much you are needed by the rest of the GOP.

If this is your manner of carrying on a conversation, not only do we not need you in the GOP, you really aren't needed on this board.

I meant to add delaying is a worthwhile goal. As life is pretty good here right now. Just like if we find a new source of oil, even if it won't last forever.. if it is the most cost effective form of energy in the present it is still worth using it.

Even if it will run out in 50 years.
