President Ahmadinejad's letter to President Bush, widely interpreted as a peaceful overture, is in fact a declaration of war. The key sentence in the letter is the closing salutation. In an eight-page text of the letter being circulated by the Council on Foreign Relations, it is left untranslated and rendered as "Vasalam Ala Man Ataba'al hoda." What this means is "Peace only unto those who follow the true path."
It is a phrase with historical significance in Islam, for, according to Islamic tradition, in year six of the Hejira - the late 620s - the prophet Mohammad sent letters to the Byzantine emperor and the Sassanid emperor telling them to convert to the true faith of Islam or be conquered. The letters included the same phrase that President Ahmadinejad used to conclude his letter to Mr. Bush. For Mohammad, the letters were a prelude to a Muslim offensive, a war launched for the purpose of imposing Islamic rule over infidels.

I'd pay real money to see something like that! ;o)
amazing analysis. you're probably right that the nuke threats are a means of buying time to get more money and bombers ready. they would see value in protecting bin laden also.
There is something about the word "spectacular" that gives me the heebee jeebees: Earlier today, I was reading from Ken Timmerman's book (Countdown to Crisis, the Coming Nuclear Showdown with Iran), and saw on p. 23 this quote, 4 weeks prior to the Beirut Marine Baracks attack, from an NSA intercept from Iranian intelligence, in Tehran, to the Iranian Ambassador to Syria in Damascus:"contact.... the leader of Islamic Amal, and instruct him ... 'to take a spectacular action against the United States Marines."

IMO, we had better treat his comments as a threat and prepare our response accordingly, and then if nothing comes of it, no harm has been done. However, I see many who want to just write him off as just another bluffing looney. They do so at this country's expense. I prefer to never underestimate my enemy.
