Seattle's single moms find strength in one another ( Liberals in a Blue State )
Seattle Post-Intelligencer ^ | May 13, 2006 | PAUL NYHAN

Posted on 05/13/2006 3:19:35 PM PDT by george76

Randi Anderson knew she was on her own the day her son was born 22 months ago when she drove herself to the hospital.

Long before Anderson pulled up to Swedish Medical Center, her film-school boyfriend was gone.

Twenty hours after she arrived at the hospital, she joined the growing ranks of single mothers.

It is a group that often feels isolated, suffers higher-than-normal rates of depression and believes it carries a stigma in a culture that celebrates marriage.

"I certainly feel like it's written across my face," Anderson, 34, said.

"We've been told it's not OK to be a single mom."

Mother's Day is increasingly celebrated without fathers in this country.

In 2004, 36 percent of all births were to unmarried women, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports, even as the teenage pregnancy rate fell...

Anderson's decision created obstacles many couples don't face -- two fewer hands to change diapers, feed the baby and give baths -- she used her experiences to create a new resource for Seattle's single mothers.

Sunday, Anderson will celebrate Mother's Day with other single moms at a potluck brunch, marking the six-month anniversary of the support group, Single2Mother, an online community that she founded.

The group represents one of a few private efforts to help single mothers, whose numbers jumped from 3 million in 1970 to 10 million in 2000.

Looks like you've been banned.

With a nasty post like that, it's no wonder.

Funny...the PI didn't run a story on ME as a single mom (with 2 less hands etc..) when my husband was DEPLOYED for a year.
And I had TWO VERY LITTLE kids to raise all by myself.
(They were 5 WEEKS old and 3 years old)

Oh, that's right though, they don't need to help us.
We are JUST FINE because there CERTAINLY is no stigma attached to US (as a military family) here in the Seattle area
/Sarcasm

That is when I first became SO DAILY involved in FR...the Canteen supported our family LIKE CRAZY!!!
(now, if only anyone had lived close enough to help mow the LAWN ;-)

So why are there so many single mothers who whine because daddy's not around? That's something I'll NEVER understand.

Maybe because you came from a long line of women who braved stormy seas with their men, loaded the magazines for the men when they fought on the frontier, bore and buried their children on long treks to the west in Conestoga wagons with their husbands, and put the rivets in B-29s that that their husbands used to end a war?

Those females you mention... Maybe they whine because they grew up in a house with no Daddy, two Mommies, or one Mommie and a pale imitation of a man and never had a male template. They don't know what a man is and treat them like some kind of strange female. What a mess that makes! Rock on!

No wonder half these libertard females end up lesbian. They don't know what real men are.

Rock on American Woman! There are many like you who are busy raising a family and don't post so often, but when you do, you drive'em home! All women are great, but American women are the best. You go girl!

Yes, it's *society's* fault that she feels isolated . . .

You know, it's wrong to blame "society" for her problems. In reality, it's the personal fault of none other than George W. Bush. (Crucify him!)

If she aborted the baby and wore it around her neck, she would be treated as a hero in Seattle.

And most of the Left Coast as well.

I can never understand unplanned pregnancies. A simple 99 cent condom could have prevented it. Having said that, she's one tough cookie for keeping the baby. Married or unmarried, children are a lot of work. They also cost a great deal of money to raise. She could have saved herself a lot of grief by simply aborting it. But she chose to have it, and take on all the attendant responsibilities that go with it.

They chose to move in with a single mother. They could have dated without living with her.

You have it 180 degrees out of whack.

She shows up on YOUR doorstep, crying and saying she's been evicted and has no where else to turn. Being kind hearted, you allow her to move in; and she is more than eager to move in. She moves her brood in, while secretly maintaining the apartment (that she was NOT evicted from) and stays for 1 month. Meanwhile, you feel good for helping a woman with a family out of a difficult situation.

Then you get your wages garnished. What? No court date? Why, this girlfriend simply intercepted the court documents. You see, all she has to do is file that you have agreed to support her and her brood - and by having them live with you for 30+ days; this is true. The court will make you pay child support for her brood; despite the fact that you have fathered none of the kids, and may not even be sleeping with her.

As you did not show up in court to contest her filing, you forfeit your right to question the finding. So, now you get to join the ranks of men paying her to stay home. There are women in Seattle making over $100,000/yr - tax free; having done nothing more than having a couple of kids, and moving in with 4 or more 'boyfriends' for a month. Nice scam, huh?

A condom will NOT necessarily prevent pregnancy ...just wanted to make sure you know that. You must ALSO use some kind of barrier spermicide to make it nearly failure free.....

Have you ever thought... you're the man in the relationship and you're the one who is to lead?

I presume nothing, and I do not intend to insult you or your children. If you feel I was, I sincerely apologize. We were talking about morality, and you said that you have two adult children who are single and childless as proof that you were a father who passed on good moral values. My point is that childlessness does not necessarily indicate morality.

I'm glad you are a father who raised two sensible, moral children. I wish every father could say the same. But no one was ever driven to holiness by being called a whore or a fag. It grieves me that such names are often hurled in the name of Christ. Christians, at least, should follow Christ's example.

"Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."

"That's the way it is in FR." -- Yup, some FRpers would not allow any opinions if they would hurt other people's feelings. The great thing is, we DO have opinions. Tough.

"Well, she would avoid being called a "whore" if she killed it."

And from the sounds of things on this thread, it might have been preferable. At least the only one who'd have known better would have been God himself.

The voice of christianity has become awfully judgemental and self-righteous of late. I wonder whatever happened to "judge not lest ye be judged "?

Happy Mother's Day to ALL the moms at FR.

If you believe in Good and Evil, then you will, by nature, BE judgmental, because you will have a clear line of demarkation to JUDGE things by. It is not forbidden, you know, just not PC.
