Katyn: the post mortem

15.05.2006

Renowned film director, Andrzej Wajda, has begun work on a major film about the 1940 Katyn massacre of over 20,000 Polish officers by Soviet forces.

After the discovery in 1943 of the mass graves Soviet Russia denied any responsibility, attributing the killings three years earlier to Nazi Germany. But the evidence pointing to Soviet guilt is overwhelming, say most independent historians.

During communist rule in Poland the Katyn issue was covered by a cloth of silence. With the coming of the end of the regime in 1989 the issue was acknowledged by Russia, with President Gorbachov admitting Soviet responsibility for the crime.

Later in 1992 President Yeltsin’s envoy handed over historical documents relating to the massacre to the then president, Lech Walesa.

But no expected thaw in relations between the two countries emerged.

Moscow, up to this day, denies it was an act of genocide and the Katyn massacre remains a very thorny subject in Polish Russian relations.

For Poland it is one of the most tragic chapters in a tragic history. Over 20,000 Polish officers and intelligentsia were brutally killed with shots to the back of the head.

Wajda’s film is entitled “Post Mortem: the Katyn tale” and it is a story of the other, forgotten Katyn victims - the women who had to live after the death of their husbands, fathers and sons.

Wajda says that the movie was a difficult film to make.

“This film will be made with much effort and pain, but how else could such a subject be realised. I have decided to deal with this issue since it is a part of the volume of Polish themes and the Katyn issue was very much missing from it.”

Andzrej Mulraczyk, who wrote the screenplay, says that the film begins in the present day, but it is in fact a huge retrospective, which shows how history affects certain, crucial decisions.

“The film shows that neither a person nor a society can live without references to history, that present day events are always related to the past. This film shows that looking ahead to the future is impossible without paying respects to those who are gone.”

Andrzej Wajda says that making films about important historic events is vital, and it does not matter that, initially, the events may seem distant or obscure to the rest of the world

”There were many such films made. Films which were to appeal to a very small group of people. How could for example the Warsaw Uprising grip the interest of the world? But then it turned out that Canal has been seen by millions of people, so did Man of Iron and Man of Marble. I think it is worth doing films which touch -us Poles but then they also move the rest of the world.”

Andrzej Wajda’s decision to undertake such a painful subject is also a personal one. His father was among those killed in the forest in Katyn in 1940.

Post Mortem: The Katyn tale is a Polish-French co-production and the shooting starts this autumn.

It's about time, and the grand old man of Polish cinema is the perfect one to make this movie. Was not aware his father was murdered at Katyn by the soviet swine. I will look forward to seeing this one.

Here's the money quote!

A film every supporter or fellow traveler of the totalitarian socialist ideology should be forced to watch over and over again until the image of rotting corpses so permeates their psyches that they will never again consider socialism a viable form of government.

We need to elevate the predations of socialism to the same level of historical recognition -- and outrage -- that the Jewish Holocaust inspires. The Socialist Holocaust claimed more lives, and even today is suggested as a workable political theory.

Nazism died with Hitler. Socialism survived Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot. It is by far the more toxic of the two.

Actually, the word I wanted instead of "toxic" was "virulent." Socialism seems to be a monster born of hope, and since hope can never be killed, it can't either.

Hitler wasn't the only dictator guilty of genocide.

"Diabolic" best describes the errors of atheism.

Lenin didn't defecate this intellectual effluence out of merely his own mortal ability. That would be far to flattering of mankind's mental prowess. Likewise, the errors prior to his writings weren't the product of mortal "enlightenment". It's supernatural in origin and can only be destroyed by Jesus Christ. For mere mortals, we must resist and reject these lies via Supernatural help--praying for God's Grace and the intercession of Arch & Guardian Angels, and the Saints.

A disturbing discovery for many is that we come to collectively understand that there is such a thing as "evil" and that it does indeed come from a source.

Fruit of a higher creature's work is Tasted by flavor of obedience or disobedience. The Grace provided to the miracle of a union of Divine and mankind's labor through Communicated Faith is Obedience. The Fruit of this Communion can only have been attained through the Purity of Jesus' Eternal Pleasing Sacrifice of His dying upon the Cross. His Blood washes away the stain of Sin. It is Spiritually Timeless and It Redeems mankind from ALL ages for all hearts that seek His Salvation.

Disobedience is chaff that falls away from the kernel of Truth. The Holy Spirit, Our Dear Advocate, is the Wind that reminds us of Jesus Christ's Teachings. We endure the chaotic friction from the original fall of man, the sin of Adam and Eve which has grown and fallen in great crescendos. The Wind of the Supernatural along with the aid of Angelic harvesters of our mortal crop separate that which pleases the Master from what will be gathered to be burned in the unquenchable fire of God's righteous anger. It's Anger of our rejecting His Love.

Like Jesus' Parable of His being the Vine and we are the branches, He will continue to prune us so that we continue producing more of what pleases the Father, the Fruit of Faith + Communion with Jesus' Sacrifice = Obedience with the Divine Will & God's Kingdom Come. The Actions of Obedience might be described as Divine Charity. Thus, we are trimmed of our bad habits that prevent us from Acting in Divine Will of the Father to fulfill his Divine Will. I make emphasis of "Acting" because our mere mortal efforts cannot produce what pleases God the Father. Anything less than Christ's participation is how Christ describes the good intentions of His Parable of a rich man sending dogs to lick poor Lazarus' wounds (and how I interpret atheist socialism's intervention: dog's that steal scraps falling from their diabolic master's table and these same criminals only lick the wounds of the tragic victims that need real help). Jesus must be One with human will to achieve Divine Will, and He must be present in us for us to be His Hands and Feet. If we are not in Communion with Him, then we become mere "rich" worldly/secular men who send dogs to do the Vocation that God intended for us to accomplish.

Pierced and bound, murdered and mutilated, the Spirit IS the Reality though cloaked mortal eyes remain blind to this Eternal Fact: The Crucified Christ is our Salvation, and He is the Fruit of the Tree of Life that removes the poison from the Tree of Knowledge. Satan has lost his battle in the mortal world of flesh, yet many mortal men have yet to understand this. This, I feel in many ways, is the wonderful, terrible, mysterious and Glorious discovery of Revelations. God's Mercy is imperceivable and unfathomable.

And if I'm wrong, I'll accept the Vatican's correction.

Nazism died with Hitler.

I wish it were so, but I fear it lives on in some of the Islamic terrorist groups. Saddam also had significant Nazi influences. The Mufti of Jerusalem, a SS General of all things, was a problem the Allies punted to the future whose legacy has returned to haunt us.

I suspected I'd take some heat over that generalization, and I don't want to make it absolute. But it is correct to say that Nazism -- the National Socialism of 1930's Germany -- died with Hitler, even if some of its doctrinal godchildren survived.
