MATTHEWS: Draw us a picture of what happened in Haditha.
MURTHA: Well I'll tell you exactly what happened. One Marine was killed and the Marines just said we're gonna take care...we don't know who the enemy is, the pressure was too much on them, so they went into houses and actually killed civilians and...I...
MATTHEWS: Was this My Lai? When you say cold blood Congressman, a lot of people think you're basically saying you've got some civilians sitting in a room or out in a field and they're executed on purpose...
MURTHA: That's exactly what happened.
MATTHEWS: ...not because any of the Marines are scared or anybody is scared...
MURTHA: ...this was not an action...this was not...first they tried to say it was an IED, there was no IED involved in this. This was troops, they were so stressed out, they went into houses and killed children, women and children. 24 people they killed. Now this is the kind of stress they are under. Listen, I don't excuse it, but I understand what's happening and the responsibility goes right to the top. This is something that should not have happened, that should have been investigated, they've already relieved three commanding officers...but this is the kind of stuff...stress is going to cause these kind of things. That's why I'm so upset about it.
MATTHEWS: Congressman, I just want to read something from the Marine Corps and then you can continue. The Marine Corps told us today that they're not going to comment today because the investigation is still ongoing. So they're investigating...

Irey Responds to Murthas Comments that U.S. Troops Killed Iraqi Civilians in Cold Blood
IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Jason Davidek 412.330.7844
May 18, 2006
Monongahela, PA Today, Washington County Commissioner and Republican Congressional nominee Diana Irey responded to her opponents recent comments claiming that U.S. Troops were responsible for the death of innocent Iraqi civilians.
I was shocked and dismayed by my opponents charge that U.S. Marines are responsible for murdering Iraqi civilians in cold blood. Why John Murtha would say such a thing in the wake of an ongoing investigation and accuse our troops of such horrific actions is beyond comprehension, Irey said.
Murtha made these comments at a press conference yesterday. Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood, Murtha said. He made these comments to reporters regarding an incident that occurred November 19th in Haditha, Iraq.
There is no doubt that my opponents disregard for the presumption of innocence and Due Process will have an adverse effect on troop morale. Unfortunately, instead of showing support for our military personnel, his partisan rhetoric will only harm our country at this fragile time. His continued comments are a devastating blow to millions of men, women and children in the Middle East who are just getting their first taste of Democracy. Irey said.
Bump
I just received word from someone close to Ms. Irey's campaign that they have received about 50 online contributions since 9pm EDT last night. Plus numerous phone calls requesting the campaign address, and a significant spike in website hits.
Thank you Free Republic, for sending a message to Mr. Murtha, and especially to our troops! And thanks to all the other interested forums following this despicable behavior and promoting Murtha's opponent - Diana Irey.
LOL! Beat me by 18 minutes. ;*)
Ping to my above post on donations.
In the mail, this morning.
It went "cluck, cluck" and layed an egg!
I meant Murtha, of course.......
Good job Coop.
Bless her heart. She will do just fine.
most of the text of the note I sent with it....
I am an Army Vietnam Veteran (67-68) and have been appalled with Rep. Murthas efforts to discredit our military personnel, as well as his generally anti-American activities. I truly believe his actions are rooted in his genuine (but obscured) political ideology. He appears to be motivated by much more than can be reasonably attributed to simple partisan politics. This man is a disgrace.
Please accept the enclosed check for your campaign expenses.
Very sincerely, from Michigan,

Good letter. I plan to contact my senators and Congressman asking them to make a public statement on Murtha. I hope others join me.
