Guns and muggers
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | May 24, 2006 | Editorial

Ordinarily, a mugging in New York City isn't news, but the one May 21 in the Bronx that made it into the The New York Post needed to be more widely reported. Scott Porter, 16, ambushed a man by first breaking a bottle over his victim's head, then punching him in the face. Ordinarily, this robbery would have ended up like the hundreds of others that take place in the city every week: The punk would have made off with the guy's wallet and valuables, and police would have another report to fill out for their massive unsolved-crime files.

This one turned out differently, however. The mugger got shot in the hand and now faces multiple felony counts because Mr. Porter tried to roll an off-duty police detective.

Substitute the cop for an ordinary citizen in this scenario, and both mugger and victim would have been arrested because ordinary citizens aren't allowed to walk the streets carrying heat. Muggers are so plentiful in New York City because the city abets their lawlessness by systematically disarming law-abiding citizens, to the point of arresting those who refuse to surrender their weapons or use them to protect themselves, their families or their property.

New York City is renowned for its tough gun-control laws. But if the city wasn't so intent upon violating people's constitutional rights to bear arms, its legions of teenage thugs wouldn't be so brazen. If the city would allow its residents to protect themselves from criminals, it would begin to lose its well-earned reputation as the mugging capital of America.

The only people Bloomberg would arrest are people defending themselves from New York's criminals.

Actually, he didn't do too bad for using a gun at hand-to-hand range after being cracked over the head by a bottle and punched in the face.

I sold guns in New Jersey. I ran into lots of NYC cops who told stories of encounters with muggers, thwarted only because the cop had his pistol at hand. No shots fired, no paperwork filed (too much bs) and often the reason they moved to Rockland and Orange Counties.

I often wish they would joing the NRA and get on New York to stop denying the right of self defense to its citizens.

I would choose the .380, and then I would immediately trade it in for something larger, like a .45.

Yep... bigger holes let the air out faster...

New York City is unique. Look at the kind of people living there. Most are foreigners who speak no English, know nothing about this country, elect people like Hillary Clinton as their senator, and are as far away from being "the people" as described in the Constitution as one can be.

Do we want such people carrying guns? I think not.

They were probably at the up-close-and-personal stage. Kind of hard to get into a modified Weaver when you're battling for your life.

Could have been defensive positioning of the hand. Not effective, just instinctive.

The detective still could get charges because he was off duty when attacked.

Cops in NYC could get into big trouble using their weapons off duty, even to defend themselves... Unless they are undercover.

I think your post is a bit misguided. This is a nation of immigrants now, as it was in the beginning.

Are you saying that because these people speak their native language and don't vote the way you would like them to that they shouldn't be able to defend themselves?

What a moronic thought! Self defense is a basic HUMAN right!

The ones you wouldn't want carrying guns, do anyway. Only the law abiding are disarmed by such "legal" infringements on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.
