Pat Robertson's leg-pressing claim draws skeptics
Dallas Morning News ^ | 5/26/06

Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson says he has leg-pressed 2,000 pounds, but some say he'd be in a pretty tough spot if he tried.

The 700 Club host's feat of strength is recounted on the Web site of his Christian Broadcasting Network, in a posting headlined "How Pat Robertson Leg Pressed 2,000 Pounds."

According to the CBN Web site, Robertson worked his way up to lifting a ton with the help of his physician, who is not named. The posting does not say when the lift occurred, but a CBN spokeswoman released photos to The Associated Press that she said showed Robertson lifting 2,000 pounds in 2003, when Robertson was 73. He is now 76.

The Web posting said two men loaded the leg-press machine with 2,000 pounds "and then let it down on Mr. Robertson, who pushed it up one rep and let it go back down again." The Web site said several people witnessed the event, and shows video of Robertson leg-pressing what appears to be 1,000 pounds.

(snip) Clay Travis of CBS SportsLine.com called the 2,000-pound assertion impossible in a column this week, writing that the leg-press record for football players at Florida State University is 665 pounds less.

"Where in the world did Robertson even find a machine that could hold 2,000 pounds at one time?" Travis asked.

(snip)

One of the photos Vasko released had a digital date stamp of 1994, although she said Robertson performed the leg press in 2003. Vasko said that perhaps the date was not set properly on the camera.

Based on what I'm reading in the article, it almost certainly is an error by the CBC Web folks. They almost certainly mean 1000 pounds, such as the video shows. This is not such a Herculean feat.

I am firmly of the opinion that the CBC erred, and that as the video shows they meant 1,000 pounds. I think anyone who really reads into this story would probably come to the same conclusion, which leads me to ask:

Why the hell is this news, anyway?

No, he likely didn't leg press 2,000 pounds. But on those machines he uses, 1,000 pounds is quite believable for someone who's trained on it for a while. For a simple leg press, one rep starting at full extension, and with a "spotter", 1,000 pounds is hardly an event, even for Pat Robertson. Try it sometime.

In summary, if the video shows 1000 pounds, and everyone thinks it was likely 1000 pounds, and 2,000 pounds is obviously too much, then you make the assumption that someone screwed up and put 2,000 pounds when they meant 1,000 pounds.

IMHO

Give him the benefit of a doubt. If he started in 1994 and leg pressed 100 pounds each year then in 2006 he could make the claim that he leg pressed 2,000 pounds. :)

I think that he meant that he leg pressed 2,000 British pounds which were donated by an elderly North Londoner who gets the 700 club on satellite dish.

Not to be confused with the massive Madeleine Albright 400lb leg press which was a direct result of carrying the White House mop bucket up flights of stairs for years.

"...but more than that, they hate people who constantly talk stupid."

Are you really saying that the "media" hates people who talk stupid?

I don't find this unusual at all. Ten years ago, when I was regularly lifting weights, I leg-pressed 1000, and I have bad knees and NEVER really worked legs. Leg press is also largely a matter of not only muscle, but having shorter legs. Someone with longer legs has a tougher time, same with squats.

That's even more than Madeleine Nottoobright. I call Bullshit.

Sorry, Pat. Here's two paintbrushes and some red and white paint. Draw another bullseye on yourself.

Full Disclosure: Who's red and white and ridiculed all over?

I personally don't know of any 'real Christians' that claim God told them he was going to destroy the Northwest, that the US should send assasins to Venezuela or that God told them to benchpress a full ton. Pat is a nut plain and simple

No. You are wrong. Jack Baur can lift this with his little toe, without eating, drinking, sleeping or going to the bathroom for 24 straight hours.

Pat? Nah.

Communist dictators swam hundreds of miles while pulling huge logs during the forties, fifties and sixties. Why can't Pat do the same?

Pat is smeared constantly in the media.

That's true, but it's also true that he's been saying some very strange things lately. I'm thinking Alzheimers.

According to CBN's website

One Saturday morning, his physician said, “I’ll get you bragging rights. Let’s go to 2,000 pounds.” Then he worked up multiple reps of 1,400 pounds, 1,500 pounds, 1,600 pounds, 1,700, pounds, 1,800 pounds and 1,900 pounds. When 2,000 pounds was put on the machine two men got on either side and helped push the load up, and then let it down on Mr. Robertson, who pushed it up one rep and let it go back down again.

That's not a 'mistake', Pat's a nut

I saw Gloria Vaderbilt's elitist little son, Anderson Cooper, try his damnest to question and spread doubt of Pat Robertson's claim of leg pressing 2,000 lbs, while watching Robertson do so on camera!

Incredible! Typical case of Anderson not wanting to believe his lying eyes while shilling for CNN.
