Drinking And Dynamite Don't Mix

SEATTLE - Three men are in the hospital with serious injuries after a fireworks accident Thursday.

Investigators say the victims were part of a group of 10 or 12 construction workers having a barbeque at the KOA campground off Highway 12 in Lewis County.

One of the men came over to the campfire and showed off a powerful firework that was about 5 inches long and an inch thick. Another man tossed it into the fire, but it failed to light, so he reached in to the fire to retrieve it, police say.

A family member told KOMO 4 News another man tried to stop him from grabbing in, and in the process, the device went off.

Police say those two men lost their hand in the explosion, and suffered other head and facial injuries. They were both airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Both men were said to be in their early 40s.

A third man who was walking nearby was also suffered head injuries and possibly an eye fracture. He was taken to Centralia Providence Hospital.

Investigators believe the two men had been drinking.

"What's an eye fracture?"

See my question in #19 regarding the age of the reporter.

He/she means an eye socket or orbital fracture.

We were fishing over 100 miles off the coast in the Gulf of Mex. We saw flames coming from a nearby boat, a 45 ft fishing yacht. Naturally we hurried over there to help in any way we could, we found a guy on the deck firing up the charcoal grill. Flames about 3ft up and he was pouring on the charcoal lighter. We had cold cuts for dinner.

When a drunken friend is making a butt out of himself, sometimes you gotta let him be.

My Bonnie looked into the gas tank
The height of its contents to see
She lit up a match to assist her

Oh bring back my Bonnie to me!

Bring back, bring back. Oh, bring back my Bonnie to me.

Back when I was a kid, there was a firework similar to crackerballs. I think we called them torpedos. They were tin foil colored and about the size of a cherry bomb. They were set off by throwing them against something.

This was in the forties, when fireworks could be bought anywhere, even toy stores, especially toy stores.

A mildly retarded neighbor thought they were candy kisses and bit into one. Blew his whole lower jaw off. We had a reminder to be careful with fireworks everytime we saw him.

Nitro, given in the proper dosage, does open up blood vessels and helps people with angina(rarely given these days of open heart surgery and stints)an overdose isn't going to do you any good.

I saw the THC thing on Mt. Rushmore.

The dynamite guys would get sick (headaches, etc.) from absorbing the nitroglycerin while cutting the charges to the needed sizes.

It certainly doesn't do any good in massive doses.

The ill effects of nitroglycerin overdose are generally the result of nitroglycerin s capacity to induce vasodilatation, venous pooling, reduced cardiac output, and hypotension. These hemodynamic changes may have protean manifestations, including increased intracranial pressure, with any or all of persistent throbbing headache, confusion, and moderate fever; vertigo; palpitations; visual disturbances; nausea and vomiting (possibly with colic and even bloody diarrhea); syncope (especially in the upright posture); air hunger and dyspnea, later followed by reduced ventilatory effort; diaphoresis, with the skin either flushed or cold and clammy; heart block and bradycardia; paralysis; coma; seizures; and death.
