North Carolina's lottery ticket buyers have a bigger prize to aim that, starting today -- a $38 million jackpot.

The Tar Heel State began selling tickets this morning for the Powerball lottery drawing, which takes place every Wednesday and Saturday night and involves lotteries from 29 states, including South Carolina.

The Powerball jackpot grows if nobody has a winning ticket.

North Carolina began selling scratch-off lottery tickets in March, but today was the first day for Powerball ticket sales.

Sure isn't going to do our lottery ( South Carolina ) any good, as now NC players can buy them near home.

My two favorite lottery sayings are:

The lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math.
and
All you need is a dollar, a dream an a miracle.

A few years back, my state barely managed to balance it's budget, and most of the revenue came from:
1) Tobacco Settlement
2) Indian Gaming Pacts

So to drive the economy we should be smoking 3 packs a day @ Foxwood?

I really do believe that gambling is the most pervasive social 'opiat', in both the public and private sector, and needs to be delt with.

Actually I really think besides this, it's gambling for people who have lost their will to live. Just wait until the "jackpot" grows to six figures.........a dollar, a dream and the monthly welfare check.

Lotto, a tax on the stupid and totally voluntary.............

A few months ago, it was announced in NC that illegal aliens would not be able to collect on any lottery winnings greater than $600. A valid Social Security Card will be required to collect.

Why would NC put a tax program in place that will finally collect taxes from a group of people that don't pay taxes, then discourage them from playing???

In the long and short run, the state would make money off of them if they would encourage them to play and let them keep the winnings. Only a few lucky ones win while the vast majority pay and pay and pay.

Lottery: A voluntary tax paid by poor people who are too stupid to understand what 38,000,000,000 to 1 means. And all of the money that the state makes will end up going into the general fund and you will have a larger government there which will never get smaller again. Congrats North Carolina!!!! (James Carville has been one of the largest lobbyists for the lottery crowd and targets Democrat governors and lawmakers)

And what do you "suggest" the GOVERNMENT should do? Take away people's right to spend their money as they see fit?

Wow. Now North Carolina will have an opportunity to ascertain its math illiteracy rate.
