Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - June 2006

Posted on 06/01/2006 7:04:43 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Al-Qaeda's Long March to War
(Full Story)

In recent weeks, media reports from both Iraq and Afghanistan have suggested the appearance of a slow evolution of the Islamist insurgents' tactics in the direction of the battlefield deployment of larger mujahideen units that attack "harder" facilities.

These attacks are not replacing small-unit attacks, ambushes, kidnappings, assassinations and suicide bombings in either country, but rather seem to be initial and tentative forays toward another stage of fighting.

"U.S., Canadian officials release details of aerial drug-smuggling operation"
CBC News ^ | 30/06/06

Posted on 06/29/2006 10:03:19 PM PDT by Clive

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "U.S. and Canadian officials say they have busted a massive drug-smuggling operation that involved helicopters transporting marijuana and cocaine across the border.

Authorities revealed on Thursday details of the two-year investigation, known as Frozen Timber, which began in November 2004 and led to the arrests of 40 people in the U.S. and six in Canada.

The smugglers would fly helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft into remote wooded areas in Washington state and B.C., including locations in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie and Okanagan National Forest, and North Cascades National Park, officials said. High-grade marijuana would be smuggled into the U.S. and cocaine into Canada.

Officials released videotape of the operation captured by surveillance cameras. It showed a helicopter flying into a wooded area in the Okanagan National Forest and using a sling to drop off a package alleged to contain 150 kilogram loads of marijuana, followed by a man rushing to it.

Another clip showed a package being dropped off in a different location in the national forest and taken away in a waiting truck.

Many of the Canadian pilots were not licensed to fly. In the last 13 months, at least two helicopters alleged to be connected to the smuggling ring crashed, resulting in the deaths of three people, officials said."

Iraqi Documents: Plans To Produce Prohibited Chemical Weapons Precursors (Translation)
Pentagon/FMSO website for Iraq Pre-war documents ^ | June 28 2006 | jveritas

Posted on 06/28/2006 6:34:38 PM PDT by jveritas

Document http://70.168.46.200/released/04-20-06/CMPC-2003-013956.pdf dated in the year 2000 and document http://70.168.46.200/Released/06-21-06/ISGQ-2003-00044424.pdf dated January 2002 contain memos that talk about finalized research and the plans to locally produce Chemical Materials that can be used as Precursors for Chemical Weapons and that are prohibited by the United Nations for Iraq to produce locally. These materials were allowed to be imported under strict UN regulation because it can be used for other civilian industries and that Iraq should have declared exactly the imported quantities of these materials and where it is used and the balance in bi-yearly report to the UN. However Iraq was absolutely prohibited from manufacturing it locally because it will not be controlled by the UN and thus it can be used to produce Chemical Weapons.

Some of the Chemical Weapons Prohibited Precursors include DICYLOHEXYLDIACARBODIIMIDE which can be used as a Precursor to make SARIN Nerve Gas. SODIUM CYANIDE AND POTASSIUM CYANIDE can be used as a Precursor to make TABUN Nerve Gas. These materials fall under the List A of the United Nation Monitored Iraq Import/Export Goods, see page 9 (A.36, A.37) and page 11 (A.50) http://www.un.org/Depts/unmovic/documents/S-2002-515.pdf , but again these materials were absolutely prohibited to be locally produced in Iraq whereas it is very clear from these memo that the Iraqi were set to produce these Chemical Precursors locally. The Sodium Cyanide and Potassium Cyanide were listed under “Drug research” programs to make it less suspicious.

AP Blog: Al-Qaida Cameraman Speaks [Zawahiri's As-Sahab Cameraman]
Associated Press ^ | June 29, 2006 | Kathy Gannon

Posted on 06/29/2006 8:42:35 PM PDT by ganeshpuri89

This day I am going to meet a wanted man by the name of Qari Mohammed Yusuf. He is a cameraman for al-Qaida's production company called As Sahab or The Cloud. He's wanted by the Afghan government.

Jamal Mutalab Beg, police chief in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province until last month, confirmed his identity and said he is being hunted by his government, which believes Yusuf tried to carry out acts of sabotage last year. The former police chief also confirms Yusuf's family details. He is the youngest of five brothers. His eldest brothers are all dead.

Two died fighting with Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, who was a U.S.-backed resistance fighter in the 1980s and today is a wanted terrorist. The other two died fighting with the Taliban, and they had been close to Ayman al-Zawahri, Osama bin Laden's No. 2 man. Yusuf's eldest brother played a particularly important role for al-Qaida, having been a liaison of sorts between Tajik and Uzbek militants and the Taliban, helping the Central Asian fighters to make their way to other parts of Afghanistan. Yusuf's family, although ethnic Pashtuns, like most Taliban, are from northern Afghanistan.

It has taken me a month of pleading and searching and pleading some more for a link to As Sahab with old contacts who still maintain close ties to Hekmatyar.

Hekmatyar has always been close to those Arab militants who answered the call to fight the communist Red Army. Those contacts are still solid today.

The pleading finally paid off.

I'm really sick and tired of them selling our country to foreigners one piece at a time.

Whatever happened to the United States of America? Inch by inch, little by little we're being globalized without any say in the process. Many of the countries buying up American land, businesses and buildings have laws in their own countries preventing Americans from doing the same in their country. In America, if people (corporate, foreign, evil-doers) have the money to spend, cities, states, politicians and citizens appear to relish greed (money in hand) more than love of country and protecting our sovereignty.

I've seen whole small cities listed for sale. What happens when a foreign country decides to purchase one (legaleze for purchased by unknown entities)? Corporations are bought and sold this way all the time (with straw officers listed as stockholders).

***"The Division of Human Rights has warned the rink, which also advertises Christian skating on Sunday afternoons, that it may be violating anti-discrimination laws."***

Yeah, but if they had a night of skating for gay people, the watchdog agencies would declare that to be politically correct and wouldn't blink an eye. It is more than enough to turn one's stomach. Doesn't Human Rights protect groups of people called Christians too? Evidentally NOT!

All the News a Terrorist can Use

Snip: This just in. It has recently been discovered that Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda have access to a technologically sophisticated, multi-million dollar intelligence gathering operation. It has agents on all continents, and sources within every agency of the US government. Even worse, this organization is actively being shielded from disruption by the American court system. It goes by the nickname 'The Gray Lady', but is officially known as The New York Times.

No information is too secret, no secret too important to national security not to be revealed in its pages, all in the name of the 'public interest'.

Last week, the Times took it upon itself to reveal the US government's top secret program to track the international financial transactions of terrorists. This is the same New York Times that six months ago revealed to terrorists that the US was secretly listening to their phone calls. This is also the same New York Times that in December of 2001, tipped off a terrorist front organization in New York, known as the Global Relief Foundation, that it was about to be raided by the FBI.

All of which begs the question, 'what do you have to do to get locked up for treason in this country?'

If a news organization had pulled this type of stunt during WWII, revealing our intelligence gathering practices against the Germans or Japanese, someone would have gone to jail.

It would be nice to think that these people truly comprehend that we are in a war. That they appreciate that there are people in this world who want to kill Americans, who would love to acquire weapons that would do far more damage than what we experienced on September 11th. People that wouldn't hesitate to incinerate New York City or Washington, DC if they could.

In truth, the fact that they can't is all that's stopping them. But give them enough time and money and they will be successful, which is why our government is trying to find and kill them before they have a chance. Letting them know how we are trying to prevent them from being successful gives them aid and comfort, the Constitutional definition of treason.

Iran’s spies set up base in Iraq’s Shiite city – report
Iran Focus Baghdad, Jun. 30 – Agents of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) are fomenting unrest in Iraq’s southern city of Basra, the Iraqi daily az-Zaman reported on Thursday.

Az-Zaman quoted Iraqi counter-intelligence sources as saying that fighters were being trained in Lebanon under MOIS supervision and sent via the Iranian border to infiltrate Basra.

Some of the fighters were being incorporated into the al-Hussein Battalion which has been responsible for numerous targeted killings and assassinations in Basra.

The daily quoted the sources as saying that the MOIS was the most powerful and influential intelligence service that had infiltrated Basra and several other key Iraqi cities including the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.

“In Basra alone it has eight large intelligence bases”, it said, adding that the bases were operating under various guises.

Among the responsibilities the MOIS has in Iraq is to train and arm extremist militias for attacks on targets designated by Tehran.

Other responsibilities include gathering intelligence about large institutions and their political affiliations and pressuring heads of government departments and institutions to take positions in defence of Iran’s actions in Basra, Karbala, and Najaf, it said.

The report said that Tehran had put aside a billion dollars from state funds for meddling in Iraq.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) was involved in oil smuggling in Iraq, it said, adding that the IRGC and the MOIS were jointly conducting the operation from a command headquarters in the Iranian border town of Ahwaz.

"U.S. says funds flow in from Saudi Arabia to Somalia"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "WASHINGTON, June 30 (Reuters) - Funds are flowing into Somalia from Saudi Arabia and Yemen to support the Islamic Courts movement that seized the capital Mogadishu this month, said a senior U.S. official on Thursday.

The State Department's point person on Africa, Jendayi Frazer, told a hearing on Capitol Hill that the United States and others were reaching out to the Arab League about the flow of funds into Somalia from Arab countries.

"I don't want to say the Saudi government is supporting any particular (Islamic) court but I do know that there is money coming in from Saudi Arabia," Frazer told the House of Representatives International Relations Committee.

"There is money coming in from Yemen and arms from Eritrea and other places (into Somalia)," she said, adding that some of the funds came from Somali businessmen based in Saudi Arabia.

Asked what the United States was doing to put pressure on Saudi Arabia to curb the flow of funds, she said "we definitely want to reach out to the governments of Saudi Arabia, Yemen and others in the Middle East."

Frazer said conflicting messages were coming from the Islamic courts, which has extended its power outside of the capital, with its "moderate face" Sheikh Sharif Ahmed writing a conciliatory letter to Washington.

However hard-line cleric Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, who is on a U.S. list of al Qaeda associates and was named head of the Council of the Islamic Courts last weekend, had showed "aggression" towards the United States, she said.

The rise of Aweys has alarmed the United States, which fears the Islamists want to establish Taliban-style rule in Somalia, despite repeated denials by Ahmed."

Boy, I sure am up early ... anyway, I found this interesting:

Big-City Police Chiefs Assail Homeland Security's Secrecy

By ROBERT BLOCK

Wall Street Journal

WASHINGTON -- Nearly five years after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, law-enforcement authorities around the country say Washington's efforts to share vital security information with them are in shambles.

While police departments from several big cities have representatives working full time with the Department of Homeland Security to glean sensitive information about terror threats, some of these departments say they still are denied access to timely, relevant information about threats and terrorist activity. And often the information they get from federal agencies -- if they get any -- is confusing, late and little better than what's on television news channels, they say.
