I think these are both great ideas, actually, but I would lean to the "Billy Mitchell" model. Once you've divorced "field" uniforms from "dress" uniforms completely, as ALL the services have, there is no longer any reason to keep the latter looking anything like "business suits".

One of my favorite USAF unforms was the blue "Ike jacket". But, then, I'm wierd: I also enjoyed wearing the tan "505" tropical short-sleeved shirt and bermuda shorts...
Didn't care much for the 505 "bush Jacket" as a uniform, though -- but I still wear mine on photo-taking trips -- lots of roomy pockets...

Bah. All the services should go to common uniforms, including dress uniforms. It's a waste of precious taxpayer dollars to endlessly redesign and field uniforms for each service.
There should be three uniforms: a daily wear/work uniform, a dress uniform, and a formal uniform. What the hell else do you need?

If I could do it all over again, I would have joined the US Army, enlisted in May, 1986 after High School at age 18 or so. I always wanted to be in the motor pool: learn how cars work and other valuable skills like that. It's the Sgt Bilko in me, I think. :-)
I think that experience would have been very maturing for me, though I don't think I'd be a career guy. I would have left a few years later (how long was an enlisted run back then, 2 years, 4 years?) and gone to college after, a lot better off for that experience, I am certain.
Actually, I encourage any man or woman after High School to either join the military, or work in a job for about two years. I'm convinced that some real world experience sandwiched between High School and college would short circuit much of the BS that's spoon-fed to college students these days.
