Terry: Bush Not Here To Sway Me

OMAHA, Neb. -- A Nebraska congressman said the president's visit to Omaha isn't meant to change his mind on immigration.

The arrival of President George W. Bush in Omaha has been widely anticipated in metro-area political circles on both sides of the aisle. Republicans Rep. Lee Terry and Sen. Chuck Hagel said there's some subtext to Bush's trip.

"When he gets onto an issue, he likes taking it to the people and building up that grassroots support, and Omaha is a good city for that," Terry said on Tuesday as he left Eppley Airfield and headed back to Washington, D.C.

Terry will not attend Bush's events in Omaha because he said he needs to participate in House debate on homeland security this week.

Terry's stance on immigration differs from the president's. He said he was pleased about Bush's visit, but he doesn't think Bush hopes to sway his vote.

"I don't think he's throwing a bone, or he's here to try to persuade (Rep. Jeff) Fortenberry, me, (Iowa Rep.) Steve King and (Sen.) Ben Nelson to change our positions," Terry said.

He's coming to Omaha to support Republican Pete Ricketts for Senator against Ben Nelson, Democrat.

Ricketts supports Bush's immigration/amnesty. Nelson is against.

Here are some stories.

Nelson will also be in Washington while the president is in Omaha. He said he questions specific parts of Bush's immigration plan. "The president is out of tune with the people of Nebraska on amnesty," Nelson said. "The Nebraskans I know and talk to want to secure the border first."

Please tell that to Senator Hagel as well.

Oh, and it's just swell that Senator Hagel whom never has a kind word for the President is suddenly by his side and issuing full confidence the President will push this through. You know...when I voted for G.W.B. I didn't do so because I wanted to envision Hagel and McCain flanking Bush's side by HIS choice OVER people that had actually had his back all these years..

BTW, after Rickett's weaselly statements on the issue, I support Nelson's re-election who at least voted right in the end. Maybe Nelson will change his mind after election, but I'm not supporting another Rep that will become Hagel-lite.

Oh, like he did on Social Security Reform.

Me thinks Terry has been smoking some good stuff.

Nelson will win big.

I just might vote for Nelson because at least he is a known quantity on this issue, whereas Ricketts bought the primary and I just don't trust him.

Be careful, be very careful.

There is more than one issue here.

I am predicting a Hillary/Ben ticket (at least if the Dems are smart). Then Hill can be the left wing kook to bash all the Pubs, and Ben can play Mr. Nice Guy. I know they tried it with Lieberman, but he was from New England. Ben would be very popular in the South, Midwest, and the reddest of states.

I have been predicting this since the "gang of 14" thing.
It could be kept quiet and out of the press until after the nomination is sewed up. I too like Nelson, wish he'd change and at least be a RINO. (which is what he would be if he did). His voting would be on par with Snow or Voinivich.

Look where some of Nelson's money is coming from, not the more moderate Dems, but the most idiot libs in the bunch. He is no Zell Miller.
