Two police officers patrolling the beach in an SUV ran over and killed a sunbather Monday, authorities said.
The officers in the patrol vehicle did not immediately realize they ran over the woman and continued driving, police Cmdr. Tom Chronister said in a statement.
A witness called the Oxnard Fire Department to report the woman was bleeding on the beach just south of the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Resort. The woman appeared to be in her 30's and carried no identification, said Ventura County senior deputy medical examiner Mike Feiler.
The officers, who were not immediately identified, had stopped on a small berm of sand to observe a swimmer whom they thought was in distress. When they saw the swimmer was fine, they drove over the berm and apparently struck the woman, who was lying about a foot from the berm's downward slope, authorities said.
The tires ran over her head, Feiler said.

Just damn.
Dang! You just don't expect to get run over while sunbathing. Maybe the police need a smaller vehicle.
Maybe the police need to know what's in front of them before they drive over it.
Let me be the first: Lucinda by Randy Newman
We met one summer evening
As the sun was going down
She was lying on the beach
In her graduation gown
She was wrapped up in a blanket
(I could tell she knew her way around)
And as I lay down beside her
You know she never made a sound
On down the beach came the beach-cleaning man
Scoopin' up the papers and flattening down the sand
"Lucinda, Lucinda, Lucinda - we've got to run away
That big white truck is closin' in
And we'll get wounded if we stay"
Now Lucinda lies buried 'neath the California sand
Put under by the beach-cleaning man
Lucinda, Lucinda, Lucinda - why'd you have to go?
They sent her to high school
They sent her to low school
She just wouldn't go further
I'll add that if you or I did that we'd be charged with manslaughter.
D'OH!
Way to be, Homer.
CDC reports one fewer skin cancer death.
I wonder if they cited her for Click It or Ticket
but the important question, was she beaten before she died?
Barney Fife alert!
Two officers were driving a Chevy Tahoe, an Oxnard Police Department vehicle, when they ran over the woman about 2 p.m., police Cmdr. Tom Chronister said. The woman was not immediately identified.
The officers weren't immediately aware they had hit someone, Chronister said. A witness called 911 to report that the vehicle had run over a sunbather and didn't stop. The witness also tried to flag down the police.
Chronister said the vehicle had gone over a quick drop in the sand before hitting the woman, and the officers didn't see the sunbather or the witness trying to flag them down.

Odd that they couldn't see the witness trying to flag them down either. They didn't seem to see much of anything.
I bet that cocoa butter plays hell with the axle
There's plenty of distractions at the beach, but I would hope that public officials entrusted with our safety would be paying better attention than this. Very sad. Prayers for those who love her.
A good reason to plant an umbrella nearby.
Is there an exemption in the law banning vehicles from the beach for police vehicles? If not, there there is no reason for them even to be out there in something larger than a golf cart.
Wow. I live a couple blocks south of this.
Whooooah. Something like this happened on Florida's Miami Beach a couple? years ago, and maimed a Briton.
Large ATVs - golf carts would get stuck.
