Wealthy couples head to U.S. to pick baby's sex (MEGA BARF ALERT)

The Chinese want boys, and the Canadians want girls. If they have enough money, they come to the United States to choose the sex of their babies.

Well-off foreign couples are getting around laws banning sex selection in their home countries by coming to American soil — where it's legal — for medical procedures that can give them the boy, or girl, they want.

"Some people spend $50,000 to $70,000 for a BMW car and think nothing of it, but this is a life that's going to be with us forever," said Robert, an Australian who asked that his last name not be used to protect the family's privacy.

He and his wife, Joanna, have two boys. Now they want a girl. Australia only allows gender selection of embryos to avoid an inherited disease.

The United States' lack of regulation means a growing global market for a few fertility clinics. These businesses advertise in airline magazines or post Web sites aimed at luring clients worldwide.

Who put the "homosexual agenda" keyword? That sort of stuff messes up the keyword searches.

Cheapening of Life continues. What kind of a man wants their child to be conceived via a test tube anyway (assuming there are no fertility problems that make it necessary)?

If people were sorting out gay gened babies, I guarantee the media take on this would be totally different.

Young males without the possibility to find a mate are a volatile group of people, to say the least.

Young males are a a volatile group of people to begin with.

The people running these fertility clinics are reactionary scum, and should bne sued for hate crimes.

Imagine, in this day and age, claiming to offer "sex selection", and only giving two choices.

What's wrong with parents wanting to choose the gender of their children? I went to the webside of The Fertility Institutes, the company mentioned in the article, and they are offering 99.99% accurate gender selection for only $18.5 thousand. That's a pretty reasonable price for an almost certain outcome.

If parents want to balance their families, and are willing to pay the several hundred thousand dollars it takes these days to raise a child through college, then the cost of gender selection constitutes a small fraction of that total cost.

I have three sons. I don't see the problem with choosing to have a daughter next. Or vice versa. It's OK by me if it's for family balancing.

Yes, but it won't stop there. First, it's gender. Then hair and eye color....then what? Custom made babies just sounds like a sick idea to me. I have three boys also and I'm so thankful for what God blessed me with. I would have loved to have a girl but don't feel an obsessive need to have one. My family is complete with my beautiful boys!

I think this particular article is only sick in terms of the fact that the clinic is fertilizing multiple eggs and then "weeding out" the non-keepers. THAT is sad and sick. However, I don't see anything regarding the practice of filtering only the semen to eliminate the unwanted gender and *then* fertilizing the egg (as we all know, only the semen determines gender and the egg is neutral until fertilized).

As the proud mother of 3 boys with baby boy # 4 due to arrive tomorrow, I would absolutely pay $15-20,000 to "buy" a girl next time around (although, physically, I don't think I can do a next time). The heartache and sadness I felt when finding out my new baby was not a girl was horrible. I will always love & adore all of my sons, but I will forever grieve at the loss of a mother/daughter relationship and all that entails. BUT, if given the choice of "tossing" unwanted boy embryos were the only way to get a girl, forget about it! The boys can be filtered at the sperm stage and that's how it should be done (although I'm sure the level of accuracy isn't quite as great).

This is definitely a case of needing to walk a mile in their shoes to understand completely.
