Sikh bracelets, but no Christian rings at school bans pupils from wearing 'purity rings'

A group of teenage Christians have been banned by a secondary school from wearing "purity rings" as a symbol of their religious belief in chastity until marriage.

At least one of the dozen pupils, who all attend the same girls' comprehensive in Horsham, West Sussex, is considering legal action against the Millais School for "a breach of human rights".

Although the school allows Muslim and Sikh pupils to wear headscarves or kara bracelets as a means of religious expression, the purity ring - a small band of silver engraved with a Biblical verse and worn as a declaration of abstinence from sexual relations - is not allowed because it is considered to be jewellery.

Lydia Playfoot, 15, who started wearing her purity ring to the school in June 2004, described its policy as "really unfair".

"My friends and I have had detentions and been taught in isolation for wearing the ring," she said. "I feel like I've been treated the same as someone who is caught bringing cannabis into school."

The increasing popularity of The Silver Ring Thing, an American Christian movement that launched in Britain in 2004 and promotes abstinence before marriage, has encouraged a growing number of adolescents to make a "pledge of chastity".

The movement's followers wear a silver ring to demonstrate their commitment. More than 20,000 teenagers have signed up at roadshows in America and Britain.

Staff at the Millais School insist, however, that the uniform dress code stipulates that no jewellery is to be worn, other than a small pair of ear studs.

Lydia said that her ring was more than a "trivial" accessory. "My ring is a symbol of my religious faith," she said. . . .

Well...if they allow the ring, then the next thing you know, these kids will be wearing Crosses and preaching hate in the hallways...

you suggested that many Christians do not condone the wearing of any adornments whatsoever...being that Catholocism is the ONLY true Christian denomination on earth, I would suggest that you, and all other so called "reformists", find out for yourselves what TRUE Christianity teaches before you spread even more ignorance throughout the world.

[How about another Crusades era? :) Works for me.]

Works for me. . .in theory; but think even PC could dampen the Will of a majority needed here. We do need to learn from this enemy. . .PC is something they refuse to buy into. . .and their 'Will' is a brazen given. . .

You been sleeping?

We are knee deep in a Crusade - but only the Muzzies seem to know it (since they have declared it). That's because we have been lulled in the slow-boil pot of PC

IT-IS-Time-For-Vouchers!

And I am very tired of voting for republicans who don't do anything to make it happen.

As to this particular episode of discrimination...Why even mention it? These things happen every single day, and the time of having a national consensus on what public education ought to be? That day is long over.

My my.

Who died and left you God?

BTW, for one so steeped in "Catholocism" - perhaps you should spell it correctly? It's "Catholicism."

Is it just me or did some folks not really read the article? This is happening in Great Britain, not the US.

Typical diversity freaks who love diversity until THEY have to tolerate something they don't like.

Well said.

LOL... I guess that's the case.

However, strike this down as reason one billion why I'm glad that I live in the U.S. Banning the rings is in clear violation of the Religious Freedom clause of the first amendment.

Actually, it's a little more focused than that. Diversity freaks will tolerate all kinds of things they don't like--ostensible feminists will mutter multicultural excuses for Muslim mistreatment of women while looking awkward. The only thing multiculturalists hate is the Gospel.

My wife was obliged to take a multicultural course as part of a psychology Ph.D. and she brought up the experience of folks from her ancestral culture--arguably really distinct from the dominant Western European culture in America--the culture of Orthodox Christian Greeks. The suggestion that this culture should be considered at all was greeted with venemous contempt.

1 Peter 3:3-5

3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves....

Take it up with Peter.

Nice thread hijack.

BTW, call your office. No self-respecting Catholic would ever refer to his "One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church" as a "denomination."

I wonder if the argument has to do with not being a traditional means of Christian expression - banning jewelry with a religious saying on it isn't the same as banning the crucifix. But there was that principle out west who suspended kids for wearing red white and blue because it looked like the American flag so things are really getting crazy.
