Pentagon warns a North Korean missile launch would be 'provocative' (U.S. to Intercept?)

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Defense Department warned that a North Korean launch of a long-range missile would be a "provocative act." ADVERTISEMENT

"There are reports they may be preparing for a long-range missile launch," said Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman.

"The United States government as a whole has been consulting with allies in the region and has made clear than a North Korean missile launch would be a provocative act," he said.

Whitman noted that the United States has limited missile defenses but would not say whether it intends to use them against a North Korean missile launch.

However, he pointedly used the term "launch" rather than "test" to describe the North Korean preparations and said Pyongyang's intentions were not clear.

"A test would imply that you would know the intentions," he said. "We don't know the intentions."

North Korea last tested a long range missile in 1998 when it fired a two-stage Taepodong missile over Japan, causing an international furore.

It declared a moratorium on flight tests of long range missiles in 1999 but said in 2005 that it would no longer keep to it.

As early as 2004, US intelligence reported that North Korea may have a Taepodong-2 missile capable of reaching the United States with a nuclear-weapon sized payload ready for flight testing.

US military intelligence believes a two-stage Taepodong-2 missile could reach the United States, while a three-stage Taepodong-2 could range the entire continental United States.

Attempting an intercept and failing could be very, very embarassing

Would I be wrong to assume that the Democrats would hope and pray (the only time they would) for the interceptor to miss ?

On the other hand, a first strike by N. Korea would also be their last.

You pose the matter as one of hitting a bullet with a bullet. That was incorrect 25 years ago
Not so. This one I do know a little bit about - at least 25 years ago.
When targeting an entirely ballistic missile, as was pointed out, is a calculable intercept point. I an certainly not familiar with the NK missile. If it in fact is entirely ballistic, then the odds of a side shot are greatly increased. However, is it has any capability of maneuvering while in flight, it exponentially decreases the odds of hitting the thing. Just because the X is on the target, does not mean it will get hit.

Cordially,
GE

Our ABM forces need a live fire test anyway.

NK is just giving us an opportunity to see if the systems really work or not. If the answer is "not", then we have a test to see what went wrong and have time to make whatever adjustments are necessary.

>Orville Redenbacher Kettle Korn popcornn for the microwave.
It's the absolute best!<

On a lighter note, Kettle Korn is wimpy! As an old popcorn officianado, handpopped corn drizzled with homemade "sticky sauce" is the ultimate in popcorn heaven. My kids still rave about my "sticky popcorn."

As an engineer I can tell you that "thingie" is a technical term.

It's slightly smaller than a thingamajig.

Which would make it slightly larger than a whatchamacallit?

Again, you are leaving out that the interceptor maneevers; that it is actively terminally guided. Here's a link to a picture of the thing. Notice the rocket bells on the SIDES of the thing. It's not just a matter of calculating an intercept point.

Right. Then there is the even smaller Dohickey.

You have to cludge all these items together.

Isreal will have more immediate intrest in this than we do since the Iranians are using NK missle technology.

What if it isn't a test and its actually armed? I wouldn't put it past the nutsos in NK to use the pretext of a "test" as a first strike.

You don't test ICBM's with a live warhead attached.

It would be easier to take it out on the launch pad! :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yep!
F-22 RAPTOR SCORES DIRECT HIT IN TESTING OF SUPERSONIC, HIGH-ALTITUDE JDAM DROP(50,000ft.drop)
Stealthy, Mach 1.5, 9.5 miles up, 24 miles away horizontaly -- and bullseye!
Heck, even a "smart rock" (concrete JDAM) would allow us to say, "Blew up on the launch pad...tsk, tsk -- too bad!" ;-)
