An incredible video from CNBC shows an AOL customer trying to cancel his account, but a phone rep won't let him do it.
What customer Vincent Ferrari got when he tried to cancel his account was a lot of frustration.
It took him 15 minutes waiting on the phone just to reach a real, live person.
And, what happened next was recorded by Ferrari on audio and lasted about four minutes:

AOL has a history of doing this.
The final lie.
LOL
good Lord....
that is a funny transcript at the link
I'll bet that, although this AOL employee was tossed over the side, he probably was instructed to make it verry difficult to cancel.
Let's hope the embarrassment prompts AOL to make some more serious changes than just scapegoat-firing one person. AOL should have an "easy cancel (but easy re-join)" policy. If AOL customers start to suspect that a Berlin Wall of sorts is being erected, to "prevent their escape," they're going to be all the quicker to TRY to escape.
I cancelled pretty easy from AOL. Was a customer for years.
Yup. AOL probably pays a commission for preventing people from canceling their account.
The service rep probably got promoted. There was a party in Bombay that day
AOL is a fricking scam and all the disks I get in the mail immediately goes in the trash.
Took me 30 minutes on hold and 15 minutes of arguing to cancel my accout 5+ years ago.
If this only lasted <5 minutes. Maybe their customer service has improved (/sarcasm)
He was on the Today show this morning. The total time of the call (hold included) was over 20 minutes
In college, I lived with three friends and we all shared a computer with an AOL account. It got to be too expensive and we were going to turn it off. Everytime my roommate would call AOL to cancel, they would literally beg and plead for several minutes for her not to cancel, and then would give her "a free month" if she promised to consider keeping AOL. This happened from September to the following August when we all moved out - we never paid a dime and never got a bill. It was hilarious - for nearly a year, they would do the same thing everytime she called.
we just cancelled aol and after a half hour of the same, they offered us there sevice for 4.95. we said no. then they said you can use tha im and email for free after we disconnect so my wife says i guess we are 2 idiots for paying 14.95 a month.
Oh... Did I mention that I spent two days and about 90 minutes on hold before that? Yeah! Friends don't let friends use AO-Hell.
There was a time, when desparate for something to do, I considered, briefly, applying at AOL, which has an office here...but that would be like going to work for George Soros...I just don't think I want to ever be that desparate...
Bombay?
That guy didn't have an accent....
That was an American loser, not an Indian one.......
probably got a promotion!!!!!!!!
