South Africans told to stop 'whingeing' about crime
Rory Carroll in Johannesburg
Wednesday June 21, 2006 The Guardian
Crime victims staged an angry protest in South Africa yesterday after a government minister suggested those who "whinged" about levels of murder and rape should emigrate.
Demonstrators, who said the 51 murders and 151 rapes recorded daily were unacceptably high, were responding to the safety and security minister, Charles Nqakula, who told parliament this month that those who complained about crime were unpatriotic moaners.
"They can continue to whinge until they're blue in the face, be as negative as they want to, or they can simply leave this country so that all of the peace-loving South Africans, good South African people who want to make this a successful country, can continue with their work."
The comments provoked outrage from relatives of murder victims and survivors of assaults, who filled the media with tales of violence and incompetent policing. "Where, honourable minister, do you propose I go?" asked a letter writer to a newspaper, saying she had been raped and mugged and was now paralysed by fear. Yesterday's protest was held outside a court where nine men were on trial charged with bludgeoning a 78-year-old woman to death in her home and raping her 25-year-old pregnant neighbour.
The attacks, which happened last month at Gordon's Bay, a beauty spot in the Western Cape, followed a series of high-profile incidents, including the killing of a judge's granddaughter and the rape of her nanny.
Dozens of people held placards urging the minister to apologise for his remarks. Fanie le Roux, a relative of the murdered pensioner, said he had not been placated by Mr Nqakula's explanation that the whingeing reference was directed at opposition members of parliament and not South Africans in general.

South Africa will go the way of Zimbabwe. It is well on its way to becoming yet another African hell hole.
A good friend of mine owns a fuel distribution company in the Breede Valley, SAFFA. He had to take a month off last fall....close his business down as the SAFFA Govt required all small business owners to go to a "conference" for sensitivity training for the workplace and other fun meetings. He said not only did he loose tons of money but he also had to pay his workers for that month.
.....the legacy of white minority rule, which damaged the social structure of the black people.
I hope none of these worthies ever go to India. Seems that with a vast population, that country is doing admirably well. Colonized they were and for over 200 years.
Fact is that they USED the structure of the whites and still do, apparently. This in reference to the law courts, civil service, military and democratic rule.
Not to nitpick, but she *could* be paraplegic with fear.
(nodding gravely) I hadn't thought of that possibility.
All of colonial Africa has been using that excuse for thirty years, and probably will continue to use it for another fifty.
James Michener, in one of his many books, posed the idea that Africa may well have to go through a couple of centuries of retribalization followed by nation-building again. I often think of that when reading news from Africa. Steyn has called it new-primitivization or re-primitivization....

Anyone remember when Idi Amin kicked out the People of India who owned most of the shops and collapsed the economy of Uganda?
Remember that India refused to take them back as most were no longer citizens of India. They went to England.
Very generous assessment. Yeah, I hope I'm wrong but some fool from sa was just talking about doin it.
[Yoda]Yes, to Peter you listen. Write can he.[/Yoda]
;-)
The whites in SAFFA own many of the businesses....I would think it would be a good thing for everyone to 'play nice' so the economy would grow in leaps and bounds......but what do I know....
I believe ten years before a Mugabe type takes power in South Africa.
Not suprising from a region where the carjackers have perfected their craft. High end cars are targeted, the driver is pulled from the vehicle, and killed immediately. This is done to keep the owner from calling and activating the lo-jack process.
Nice!
Proves the adage:
Guns are outlawed, the criminals have the guns, and the machetes, and the lawnmower blades, and oh yes, the gasoline soaked burning automobile tire necklace.
Thank heavens Peter Hathaway Capstick was not around to see this, and hopefully Mrs. Capstick was spared.

Yeah, like those committing the fifty-one murders and one-hundred-fifty rapes a day!"
Or the farm squatters who have driven off the productive landowners turning the breadbasket of africa into a dustbowl!
Gotta love those african national communists (ANC?)!
Proves that you can't impose civilization on savages. It doesn't work, and the savages become more sophisticated in their savagery.
UNNNGGGHH HMMMMM
Take up the White Mans burden
Send forth the best ye breed
Go send your sons to exile
To serve your captives' need
To wait in heavy harness
On fluttered folk and wild
Your new-caught, sullen peoples,
Half devil and half child
Take up the White Mans burden
In patience to abide
To veil the threat of terror
And check the show of pride;
By open speech and simple
An hundred times made plain
To seek anothers profit
And work anothers gain
Take up the White Mans burden
And reap his old reward:
The blame of those ye better
The hate of those ye guard
The cry of hosts ye humour
(Ah slowly) to the light:
"Why brought ye us from bondage,
Our loved Egyptian night?
Take up the White Mans burden-
Have done with childish days-
The lightly proffered laurel,
The easy, ungrudged praise.
Comes now, to search your manhood
Through all the thankless years,
Cold-edged with dear-bought wisdom,
The judgment of your peers!
Bad governments are notorious for performing tasks they shouldn't (education, healthcare) and not performing tasks they should (national defense, crime prevention and prosecution).
Nagin called in the National Guard when he had 54 murders in the city of New Orleans and more than half the people have left the city. I wonder what these places have in common?
Crime was sky high in the apartheid era.The difference now is that that are quite a few more white victims than before and thats why there is such a big fuss.
As long as murder and mayhem were confined to the townships,no one really cared that much.
"Proves you can't impose civilization on savages"
So you oppose our efforts to do that in Iraq?
