Cannon-Jacob primary race getting national attention over immigration debate
ABC 4 ^ | 24 JUNE 2006 | ABC 4

Posted on 06/26/2006 7:03:57 PM PDT by Extremely Extreme Extremist

Tuesday, Utahns all over the state will be heading to their new electronic voting machines.

Tuesday is primary day in Utah and the hottest contest is in Utah's third congressional district.

There, two republicans - incumbent Chris Cannon and challenger John Jacob - have been battling it out over the issue of immigration.

This race is also attracting national attention because it's viewed as a barometer of how the immigration issue sits with voters; One candidate is accusing the other of being too soft on the issue.

Monday's debate aired on KNRS 570 AM, ABC 4's sister radio station.

Recent polls show Cannon with a slight edge, but with enough undecided voters to keep Jacob within striking distance. At this point, pollsters believe the race is too close to call.

Your support for Tancredo makes no sense to me.

Because he supports strict border enforcement?

Tancredo has now been the first member of the GOP House to suggest that Tom Delay should stand down

Yes and he also called the charges against DeLay a bunch of crock, and DeLay had to step down under House GOP rules anyway. Your buddy FairOpinion already brought this up and I shot it down.

Called fellow conservative Pence a traitor on immigration

He didn't call Pence a traitor. Back up this allegation. Pence is still a member of his immigration reform caucus.

backed a nutcase in a race against another good conservative

Cannon's pro-illegal support undermines his "conservatism." Calling Jacob a nutcase is just an ad hominem attack.

and endorsed Bilbray who is now in trouble in the House for his total support of earmarks.

Wrong again...

Wrong again...

I think you may want to check with your good friend Spiff. I mistakenly said that Tancredo endorsed the independent and several posters corrected me that he endorsed Bilbray.

Then Bay should really be fuming about the Mormon Church's reception of Fox when he went to Utah. Or the long time missionary work of the LDS in Mexico.

...or this.

Former Conservative Hero Mike Pence has announced his own guestworker/amnesty plan which he has the gall to call a "No Amnesty Solution." House Republicans are our only barrier against the flood of immigrants that the senate amnesty will bring and Pence is the hole in the dike. We need to stop him now. How can you stop it?

Yes well former conservative hero is really not as bad a traitor. LOL

She married in 1982, too, but divorced.

I followed her quite a lot, especially when she hosted Equal Time. It's weird this is the first I've heard of her converting from Catholicism to Morman.

Hispanic Group Convenes in Sensenbrenner's (R, WI) Backyard

"Speakers include House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Ken Mehlman, chairman of the Republican National Committee, and Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee."

What's that saying about birds of a feather flocking together?

Maybe the marriage had something to do with it in that case. I don't have a clue.

Here's hoping that Washington cleans out their ears and really listens to what they don't want to hear ;-)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

I live in the 50th District in San Diego (another recent highly watched election) and...

The number one reason Bilbray won is because of his stance on immigration.

The number one reason Busby lost is because of her telling an illegal that you didn't need papers to vote or help on a Congressional campaign.

It is great to have President Vincente Fox from Mexico come visit us here in Utah

Wow. Making a general statement welcoming a foreign head of state into Utah.

Nice try, but it doesn't quite rise to the levels of pro-AMNESTY statements made by Cannon.

Drats. Now you've exposed Ken Melman as another Nancy Pelosi.

By the way, what time will you be at the polls tomorrow? Maybe you and Spiff can ride together.

and, if you read the blogs in the local news for Utah, you know that the turnout is going to be huge tomorrow and most people say they are voting to vote against Cannon. He is not a popular man.

Yep and now he is in hot water in the House for his immediate embrace of earmarks. So we have another hog at the trough.

Speaking of birds of a feather, this is quite confusing.

bay buchanan backs Cook because she says Jacobs is weak on the borders, Jacobs calls Tancredo an opportunist and identifies with the Pence Plan, which buchanan and Tancredo call amnesty, Cook looses so now they back Jacobs, despite his being weak on borders and favoring the Pence plan. Must be difficult to keep it all straight.

Do you have a prediction as to the odds? I said Cannon had an 80% chance to win. Are you on the flipside? Of course, it is speculation. Cannon seems to be running behind a little bit in Provo, and ahead in Salt Lake City burbs.

I don't live in UT but Cannon needs to be put out to pasture.

And if he wins he won't get beyond 2008 anyway.
